Bloc Party are...

Absolutely fucking amazing live! I went to see them in Wrexham last night and seriously, if they are playing near you you should check them out, especially as they are touring with Mystery Jets who are fucking brilliant too.
Mystery Jets are so lovely, I went to shake the lead singers hand (Blane I think) and he is so lovely! Really sweet to talk to. The ingenuity of Mystery Jets is amazing, using at one point, a bloody colander as part of his mini drum kit-genius! And the guitarist that I don't know the name of (the one that was wearing a fur lined jacket) was brillaint, the riff that he did on the second to last song was astounding.
Everyone went schizo for Bloc Party and stormed the stage. At one point a huge guy that was moshing behind me just literally picked me up by the middle and chucked me on stage. I moshed with Bloc Party on stage! Woohoo! I am also owed a drum stick by Bloc Party!

So to summarise, go see Bloc Party and Mystery Jets because they are both amazing bands that deserve success, and it only cost £5 to get in! Bargain!

  • Re: Bloc Party are...

I'll be seeing them on thursday if i can find someone to go with (or maybe even if i can't)...
    • Re: Bloc Party are...

      Im seeing them in november...
      woooooooooooooooooooooo
  • Re: Bloc Party are...

second last song last night was "on my feet".
the furry guitarist is will - do you mean the "scary" riff? for scary it is.
and there's an I in blaine.

and wasnt the lighting INCREDIBLE last night?
    • Re: Bloc Party are...

Bloc Party are... distinctly average indie rock.
  • Re: Bloc Party are...

  • Re: Bloc Party are...

i saw them in NYC a couple weeks ago.
    amazing.
    definitely check them out.
  • Re: Bloc Party are...

They are delightful - gorgeous songs, gorgeous boys.

  • Re: Bloc Party are...

    ...one of my favourite bands.
    • Re: Bloc Party are...

Why do girls always get labelled groupies for liking bands a little over enthusiastically??

I like 'Little Thoughts' and Kele's voice is pretty unusual.

What I do hate is NME suggesting because he's black he should be in the Fugees and doesn't look fit the indie kid mould. Why the **** would he want to? The ones with the fashion haircuts and 'right' clothes are just pretentious little devils.

That's NME and alot of Indie fans for you, style over substance.
      • Re: Bloc Party are...

Wasn't that what someone at an airport in America said to Kele at customs? I don't think that was an nme quote, I think that was what they picked up on.

However, I do agree that they have commented on the fact that it is unusual for an indie band to be fronted by someone with dark skin, but i suppose that's true really. The majority of indie seems to be 'white boy' bands atm. Unfortunate, but thats the way it is.

        • Re: Bloc Party are...

i don't see why its that unfortunate, white people would be just as good at playing indie as black people...unless you think indie should be equal opportunities?
          • Re: Bloc Party are...

I dont get the fuss. saw them at reading, they were dull.
            • Re: Bloc Party are...

what the nme said was quite rude.
blacks have just as much indie talent as any other white indie singer/musician.
        • Re: Bloc Party are...

No the NME did a piece months back on Bloc Party, it was introductory for people who didn't know who they were. The week where Carl or Pete Libertine were on the cover

"In his head Kele's the bog standard Indie Urchin, no different from the singer in say, The Cribs. But in reality, as possibly the first ever black-fella-singing in an indie band, he's a shining (if reluctant) icon of cultural nonconformity to stand alongside Rosa Luxembourg, Martin Luther King and her from Skunk Anansie. Er possibly."

Rock was originally black music, Indie is a derivative of rock music. Not all people from any race are the same and it's only natural that black kids who like rock/indie start picking up guitars and coming home to the music that made people like Little Richard great.

          Earlier fugee quote:
"Singer Kele Okereke should, by rights, be making billions in a reformed Fugees"
Weeks later a customs officer made the remark that Kele should sing some Fugees

Well all black people look the same right? Wyclef has locks and so does Kele. Ignorant people around the world shout snap!

The NME went down the same road with The Dears singer.

Seriously I don't care who makes or enjoys the music as long as its good, someone should tell the indie snobs who looked at me like i was an alien at the Razorlight gig to do the same.
          • Re: Bloc Party are...

It is sad. Why make a thing of the fact he's black? He's pictured, we can see that. We don't need it pointed out in neon letters with a huge dangly finger over his cranium. It's not really NME being racist, just gloriously naive and dumbwhiteboyish. As for the band.. not bad at all.
  • Re: Bloc Party are...

Going to see Bloc Party this coming Saturday, well, assuming I get in...
    • Re: Bloc Party are...

saw them last night at cardiff, 3rd time i've seen them, and they just get better and better. maybe it's because this was the first headline slot i've seen them do. anyway, whatever the reason they were just great.

      support band was dreadfull tho.
      • Re: Bloc Party are...

I like NME, the mag i'd most like to work for, but it shows they're not forward thinking or open minded as they should be or maybe they're just second guessing the mindsets of their readers.

Yeah i don't think they're racist and its not 'dumbwhiteboyish'. Its indie snobs of both sexes and society in general
        • Re: Bloc Party are...

"I like the NME, the mag i'd most like to work for..."

HA HA HA HA HA HA

          Priceless
          • Re: Bloc Party are...

say it again, so I can be here when it happens..
            • Re: Bloc Party are...

Oh i don't play with teeny tiny little boys, what a shame!
              • Re: Bloc Party are...

i didnt know rock was originally black music.since when?and if it does why the hell do i get so much grief and dirty looks from blacks then?
                • Re: Bloc Party are...

does my age really matter here? it was just a passing coment, nothing to get offended by.

All modern music (bar classical) originates from jazz and blues. We stole their music, plus your a skinny arse white boy.
  • Re: Bloc Party are...

    ...going places.
    • Re: Bloc Party are...

      ?
      • Re: Bloc Party are...

Bloc Party's guitarist has the slenderest torso on earth*. He's pleasinbgly freakish.

        I like them.

        These facts are unconnected.

*as in ribcage. I'm sure there are people with less fat on their emaciated little indie bodies, but Bloc Party Guitar Bloke ACTUALLY DISAPPEARS from the neck down when viewed in profile.
        • Re: Bloc Party are...

Sleaze Rock Bitch I have no idea why 'Blacks' like moi as you put it give you grief maybe its your attitude. I get dirty looks from indie snobs but i would never say its because they're white and that makes them do it. it's because i'm not the norm in the cliquey scene they have going largely perpetuated its artists and yes by NME.
          • Re: Bloc Party are...

I'd rather listen to The Fall...
            • Re: Bloc Party are...

The NME wouldn't mention that Julian Casafuckingblancas is white, so why mention Bloc Party's singer is black?
              • Re: Bloc Party are...

The NME is in some kind of crisis at the mo. Its dropped in price and the covers and design are crap. That's just the start. Their obsession with shrooms was deadly boring and juvenile.

I don't reckon we'll ever get too many ethnic indie rock artists/band members. Are The Strokes still recording? Dear God! That 'End Has No End' song makes Keane look exciting.

Anyway i'll leave this thread to the Bloc Party fans
                • Re: Bloc Party are...

Yes. Please do. Why does everything get turned into a debate about the bloody NME? It's bloody shit. Leave it at that!

I thought Blaine had an 'I' in it but wasn't sure.
                  • Re: Bloc Party are...

And the lighting WAS amazing, all in time and everything. Skill.
'On my feet' was my favourite song, with the scary but amazing riff. I'm surprised Will's fingers didn't drop off.
Do they have a record deal yet or what?!
                    • Re: Bloc Party are...

Album's meant to be out early next year
                      • Re: Bloc Party are...

what do you mean maybe its my 'attitude' i get the grief because they dont believe it is right and it could be possible that black people could be into alt rock.
                        • Re: Bloc Party are...

Erm I like altrock so yes they could. People give you grief for what exactly???
                          • Re: Bloc Party are...

god if you dont understand what im trying to say theres absolutely no point in me actually trying to explain it to you.
                            • Re: Bloc Party are...

But you didn't explain in the first place. I think you'll find your original statement was ambiguos. Secondly if you think people have a problem with you why should i have to explain for them? Besides as i said earlier this thread isn't the place to discuss your gripes against sections of society.
                              • Re: Bloc Party are...

                                ok.
                                • Re: Bloc Party are...

                                  please note:
it is quite noteworthy that kele is black.
while black, white, asian and whatever other races can make whatever music equally well, it is a simple fact that there are very few non-whites in indie bands, especially as frontmen/women.
kele being black makes us think of this issue and wonder if there is racism in our "scene", and if there is, whether or not it can be bettered.

                                  that wasnt too well worded.
                    • Re: Bloc Party are...

theyre putting out a single at the very beginning of next year on Transgressive, which is run by one of the guys who put out the first bloc party single.

at the hull gig they had bloc party on extra vocals for on my feet.

and yes, i am a genius lighting tech.
email to book me for weddings, bar mitzvahs and stadium gigs.
                      • Re: Bloc Party are...

Last night at Welly was great, despite the drinks being overpriced and the infadels being completely forgettable.

Mystery Jets were amazing, fantastic weird psychedelic/folky/experimental (delete as appropriate) music, but still completely listenable. Bloc Party we're top class as expected.

The highlight of my night though must've been some Cobain lookalike who started crowd surfing on Banquet and seconds later got dropped, or maybe Helicopter, or saying hello to Blaine outside, or Mystery Jets helping out on The Answer, or (you get my point).
                        • Re: Bloc Party are...

Oh, and opening the set with The Marshalls are Dead. (i'll stop now i think)
                          • Re: Bloc Party are...

I don't think I'm convinced just yet, but they're playing in Belfast soon and I'll be sure to check them out. Radio 4 are playing the night before so it's set for what could be a couple of great days.
                            • Re: Bloc Party are...

you should be pleasantly surprised, i was worrried that the new tracks might not be up to the usual standard, but was pleasantly surprised. Plus you get to see mystery jets which is worth the entrance fee alone.
                              • Re: Bloc Party are...

Please ignore the fact i said "pleasantly surprised" twice
                                • Re: Bloc Party are...

mjs left the tour after hull.
the slightly less fantastic, but still certainly worthwhile New Rhodes replace them.

as far as i know, mjs only helped out on The Price of Gasoline (MORE! MORE! MORE!) but i may be wrong.
                                  • Re: Bloc Party are...

has any1 seen them at the paradise bar in new cross?
                                    • Re: Bloc Party are...

                                      bloc party?
when i asked, they declared that only one of them, gordon, had ever been to new cross, and that that was only three times.
                                      • Re: Bloc Party are...

i saw loads of pictures from thier gig in the paradise bar and have quite a few pictures of them on my comp of them with the paradise bar setting thing so i dont know whats going on with that..
                                        • Re: Bloc Party are...

Yeah, Bloc party have played the Paradise Bar but none of them are from or live in New Cross, so they somehow got lumped in with that scene - probably because of their style of music and that whover started mentoining that there is a New Cross scene wanted a credible band involved...
                                          • Re: Bloc Party are...

their explanation is that they were put on a compilation with a bunch of actual new cross bands. maybe i misunderstood, and what they meant was that theyd been there a few times, but gordon only 3 in his life.
                                  • Re: Bloc Party are...

You're completely right, my bad memory...
