The station has stated that doesn't expect to stop there, and will transform itself into a national alternative to Radio 1, hoping to tempt listeners away from the latter's indie/rock shows.
Xfm's national following has grown since the increase in digital radio use (it is now available in most cities through the digital signal), and the switch to full-coverage analogue might not be that far away. The Guardian has quoted the station's managing director Graham Bryce:
"Our strategy is to build a national business, be that via analogue, digital or other means. The next big one is the north-east, Newcastle-Sunderland area, and there's every likelihood we'll go for that.
"Frankly, we're more creative and innovative than they (Radio 1) are. They've been around a long time and they're quite stuck in their ways - I think we should shake the radio market up a little. People who love guitar rock, we know through research, often don't like pop or urban. They have to put up with the urban record to get to the one they actually want to listen to. It may take a while to match their audience levels, but as digital takes off they're going to come under a lot of pressure."

During the day it's 'playlist indie' a lot of the time, but that's still infinitely preferable to daytime Radio 1, and John Kennedy's evening show is ace.
Re: Xfm to go nationwide?
As well as John Kennedy, I really love the Rinse at the weekend...
Oh, and yeah, digital radios rock, I need to be getting one at home.

i quite want to go to that gig, but then, i quite want to eat at glastonbury. decisions, decisions..
Re: Xfm to go nationwide?
I'm doing email collection work at the Athlete gig tonight -urgh!
Re: Xfm to go nationwide?
Is Kennedy playing cardiff barfly again? He's cool.
Re: Xfm to go nationwide?
Not sure who's DJing in the Barfly tomorrow sorry.

They deserve each other, then. it's a shame that XFM have a few really good shows that cater for broader tastes (The Remix being one of them) and they go and make a statement like that. They can fuck off, frankly.
i bet the adverts are annoying as well.
Re: Xfm to go nationwide?
But XFM is great, they play actual decent music, even if the reception is bad because I'm not 'technically' in london... mneurgh.

Unless you're pretty central you might not get it very well. Roath, Canton etc. should probably get it alright - it's aiming at Studentsville for obvious reasons.
X is running a number of random months on FM in big cities where it's available on digital radio in an attempt to get people to make the switch and add some clout to any full time licenses they might go for in the future.
By the by, there's a full time semi-regional Cardiff/Swansea license (or Cardiff only) in the offing in the next few years. An rock/alt station's expected to take it but a talk station could be an outside possiblity. XFM, Kerrang! and possibly Virgin radio would be the main bidders.
Sadly, it's the nature of *commercial* radio that we have to put up with such broad daytime playlists. But them's the breaks I guess. A pretty tame playlist and attitude is needed to built a reasonably sized audience which attracts the advertisers and pays the bills.
I know a lot of people in radio, myself included, who are hugely frustrated at the lack of variety and need to serve the lowest common demoninator, but at the end of the day - it's a business and that's the way it has to be.

Oh wow, so not only are they going to play blandest-of-the-bland indie-lite and chart rock all day, they're not even gonna throw in a bit of pop or hiphop ('urban' pssh) to liven things up. How intensely dull.
I guess John Kennedy is okay.
Re: Xfm to go nationwide?
But still, that comment about guitar-music was really depressing.
Re: Xfm to go nationwide?
And that MD's comments, oh dear oh dear, depressing's the word. A tie-in with NME can't be far off now..
Capital have so fucking much to answer for. cunts... [and not just for their raping of Xfm - witness the deterioration of Choice FM in the last few years too]
Xfm to go nationwide?
That said, I *hope* that Bryce is showing more ignorance of his station than actuality. It would, as Matt says, be shame if we're looking at a total loss of anything like even the Beasties because it's not 'guitar' music. At that point it's just going to be Vrigin a little more 'current'.
They already play U2 like they fucking matter which is really hideously upsetting...

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?
much better job (apart from Ian Camfield's dreadful presenting style).
This is the best we're going to get from commercial radio. XFM gets 500,000 listeners in London and still loses money. Unfortunately there are less people than that who want to hear a varied selection of new music.
BBC 6 Music concentrates too much on nostalgia.

Still, good to know the station's owners aren't raking in the $$, just a shame they've got deeper pockets to afford the losses unlike Sammy Jacobs and [grr] Chris Parry...
