Xfm to go nationwide?

London-based alternative station Xfm could go nationwide following Ofcom's decision to award them an analogue license for the Manchester region.

The station has stated that doesn't expect to stop there, and will transform itself into a national alternative to Radio 1, hoping to tempt listeners away from the latter's indie/rock shows.

Xfm's national following has grown since the increase in digital radio use (it is now available in most cities through the digital signal), and the switch to full-coverage analogue might not be that far away. The Guardian has quoted the station's managing director Graham Bryce:

"Our strategy is to build a national business, be that via analogue, digital or other means. The next big one is the north-east, Newcastle-Sunderland area, and there's every likelihood we'll go for that.

"Frankly, we're more creative and innovative than they (Radio 1) are. They've been around a long time and they're quite stuck in their ways - I think we should shake the radio market up a little. People who love guitar rock, we know through research, often don't like pop or urban. They have to put up with the urban record to get to the one they actually want to listen to. It may take a while to match their audience levels, but as digital takes off they're going to come under a lot of pressure."

Xfm to go nationwide?

woohooo! i lub Xfm. T'is me fave station.

Xfm to go nationwide?

I bet it will get some stick here, but getting a digital radio and hence Xfm was the best purchase I ever made.

During the day it's 'playlist indie' a lot of the time, but that's still infinitely preferable to daytime Radio 1, and John Kennedy's evening show is ace.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

Agreed, although the adverts get annoying. It's Radio 1, 6Music and Radio 2 for us at work. XFM for me in the mornings and late evenings.

As well as John Kennedy, I really love the Rinse at the weekend...

Oh, and yeah, digital radios rock, I need to be getting one at home.

Xfm to go nationwide?

I'm not much of an Xfm lover, but I'm glad it's been awarded the Manchester licence. It's certainly an improvement on Galaxy 102 and Key 103, both of which are pure garbage.

Xfm to go nationwide?

I yesterday found out that XFMs been broadcasting in Cardiff for the past few weeks, it's only like a one month deal tho. Going to an XFM night tomorrow at the Barfly, Martini Henry Rifles & The Rakes, plus disco dancing till late. Huzzah!

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

i think i saw you last week at patrick wolf.
i had a light blue jumper on and i was with a girl with red hair (and a wolf-drunk glazed look in her eye) and you took our tickets off us?
possibly?
i quite want to go to that gig, but then, i quite want to eat at glastonbury. decisions, decisions..

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

I was at Patrick Wolf but I wasn't working. My friend Nick was doing ticket work that night.

I'm doing email collection work at the Athlete gig tonight -urgh!

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

hmm I didnt know they had a cardiff liscense whats the frequency monpot?

Is Kennedy playing cardiff barfly again? He's cool.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

It's around the 87 i think, which I thought was Real Radio, but yeh, somewhere around there. It's only going on untill the start of next month tho.

Not sure who's DJing in the Barfly tomorrow sorry.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

cheers fella

Xfm to go nationwide?

It's about time, here in Leeds there is no radio station worth listening to

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

That's because Leeds is shit :)

Xfm to go nationwide?

While I prefer XFM to a lot of other commercial radio stations, that quote from the MD makes it sound as though they're selling themselves primarily on being less broadminded than the BBC. I know what he means but still...

Xfm to go nationwide?

What is wrong with people? Why do people only want to listen to one kind of music? Radio 1 isn't exactly perfect, but it's the only pop station in the country that plays music from a variety of genres and treats them all the same. XFM is the lowest common denominator for people who think guitar="real".

Christian O'Connell's a wanker too.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

i'm with you there.

" People who love guitar rock, we know through research, often don't like pop or urban"

They deserve each other, then. it's a shame that XFM have a few really good shows that cater for broader tastes (The Remix being one of them) and they go and make a statement like that. They can fuck off, frankly.
i bet the adverts are annoying as well.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

Yeah well Christian O'Connell's going to Virgin anyway.

But XFM is great, they play actual decent music, even if the reception is bad because I'm not 'technically' in london... mneurgh.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

Yeah - it's quite funny, I saw an interview with Mr. O'Connell a year or two ago where he said 'If Virgin asked me to leave XFM, I wouldn't because I wouldn't be able to stand saying, 'and here's another classic...phil collins!' and now he's saying 'Virgin has always been the station I wanted to be on - it's a dream come true'.

Xfm to go nationwide?

the trouble with xfm is that in the day you just get the same 7 songs on loop - even if they are indie, and preferrable to the crazy frog, you soon get sick of them...

Xfm to go nationwide?

the later shows kick arse tho..

Xfm to go nationwide?

So now, the rest of the UK now gets to hear Coldplay, Keane, The Kaiser Chiefs, Pete Doherty's solo single and Oasis repeated ad nauseum until the graveyard shift when the good shows are on? Woop.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

Oh, quit your whinging.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

to be honest, rather that than "lonelyyyyy i am so lonelyyyyyyy.."

Xfm to go nationwide?

Xfm is only on air in Cardiff for a month as an RSL (restricted service license).

Unless you're pretty central you might not get it very well. Roath, Canton etc. should probably get it alright - it's aiming at Studentsville for obvious reasons.

X is running a number of random months on FM in big cities where it's available on digital radio in an attempt to get people to make the switch and add some clout to any full time licenses they might go for in the future.

By the by, there's a full time semi-regional Cardiff/Swansea license (or Cardiff only) in the offing in the next few years. An rock/alt station's expected to take it but a talk station could be an outside possiblity. XFM, Kerrang! and possibly Virgin radio would be the main bidders.

Sadly, it's the nature of *commercial* radio that we have to put up with such broad daytime playlists. But them's the breaks I guess. A pretty tame playlist and attitude is needed to built a reasonably sized audience which attracts the advertisers and pays the bills.

I know a lot of people in radio, myself included, who are hugely frustrated at the lack of variety and need to serve the lowest common demoninator, but at the end of the day - it's a business and that's the way it has to be.

Xfm to go nationwide?

Like a lot of radio stations, XFM plays mainstream, paint-by-numbers indie/rock in the daytime, and you have to listen to shows like Kennedy's and Music Response and Import/Export to hear the decent, underground stuff. Radio 1 do this, as do probaby Radio 2 (I don't know; I don't listen). Even talk radio is often better in the evenings, Radio 5 Live between 1am and 5am is often intriguing and interesting for those nightowls such as myself.

Xfm to go nationwide?

"People who love guitar rock, we know through research, often don't like pop or urban"

Oh wow, so not only are they going to play blandest-of-the-bland indie-lite and chart rock all day, they're not even gonna throw in a bit of pop or hiphop ('urban' pssh) to liven things up. How intensely dull.

I guess John Kennedy is okay.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

I dunno - the 'urban' that Radio 1 plays isn't really hip-hop - it tends to be piss-poor rnb pap like the Black Eyed Peas. so the less of the better.
But still, that comment about guitar-music was really depressing.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

to be honest '1 Thing' by Amerie pisses upon the vile Xfm playlist from the greatest of glorious heights. Play that once an hour during the day and that sham of an alternative station would already be a hundred times better... (especially with that breakfast prick on his way out)
And that MD's comments, oh dear oh dear, depressing's the word. A tie-in with NME can't be far off now..
Capital have so fucking much to answer for. cunts... [and not just for their raping of Xfm - witness the deterioration of Choice FM in the last few years too]

Xfm to go nationwide?

Yeah, Xfm was good even 5 years ago I reckon. Tom Binns was a genuinely good breakfast show DJ and Bob Geldof was really quite interesting, like or hate what he played. These days it's just adopted such a depressingly 'laddish' attitude...

That said, I *hope* that Bryce is showing more ignorance of his station than actuality. It would, as Matt says, be shame if we're looking at a total loss of anything like even the Beasties because it's not 'guitar' music. At that point it's just going to be Vrigin a little more 'current'.

They already play U2 like they fucking matter which is really hideously upsetting...

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

6 Music is much better.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

I disagree. 6 Music is good but it's not better. It's actually too ecclectic for me and ends up being better in theory than in fact. I don't want to hear Housemartins tracks or similar 80s disasters. Sometimes I do want to hear some excellent soul courtesy of Criag Charles but often I don't. While I have my DAB and I have tuned in a lot, most of the time I find myself turning over again.

Really what I want is Xfm back to how it was... *sigh*

Xfm to go nationwide?

this means i will no longer have to wake up to nicksy in the morning

Xfm to go nationwide?

Excellent.

Xfm to go nationwide?

i wont hold my breath, nothing comes to the west country other than old people and tourists.

Xfm to go nationwide?

XFM is the best your country has, so I'd stop whining.

Xfm to go nationwide?

i hate xfm. radio for rock is pathetic. not one good station.
radio 3 all the way now! :D

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

Records stay on the daytime playlist for too many weeks, but it's listenable in the background in short bursts and the daytime DJ line-up is now good.
much better job (apart from Ian Camfield's dreadful presenting style).
This is the best we're going to get from commercial radio. XFM gets 500,000 listeners in London and still loses money. Unfortunately there are less people than that who want to hear a varied selection of new music.
BBC 6 Music concentrates too much on nostalgia.

Re: Xfm to go nationwide?

I was trying to say that XFM does a good job from 7.30 to 1.00 in the evening, but accidently deleted those words.

Xfm to go nationwide?

do they really only pull 500,000 listeners now? it was only 100,000 or so less before that fateful day Capital stepped in all those years ago. Mmm, interesting...
Still, good to know the station's owners aren't raking in the $$, just a shame they've got deeper pockets to afford the losses unlike Sammy Jacobs and [grr] Chris Parry...
