Brown paper packages trussed up with staples...the postmark reads Leicester...what can it mean?

Another score on the card for what is fast becoming one of the most vital hotbeds of new music in the UK, thats what. Queen Marys Revenge offer a curious collision of genres that fall somewhere between latter day At The Drive-In and a more discordant, cardigan-less Idlewild.

If sandpaper scratching were the musical equivalent of earshredding operatic sadism then 'Meta/Para' would be its universal soundtrack. Vocally reminiscent of Hundred Reasons' Colin Doran, Queen Marys Revenge serve up a more graceful palate of noise, fury and melodic charm - usually during the same song - which can only stretch one's imagination further than simply labelling them with the usual emo/post-rock template.

The other track on here, 'Hera Into Heifer', drags Zeus' envious missus kicking and screaming into the 21st century in a hail of visceral top string led feedback. Of the two songs, 'Hera...' possibly shades it thanks to its blissful energy, which makes Queen Marys Revenge all the more sweeter.

And to think that I once heard someone claim (at a Longview gig, to my shame) that Leicester was "like Birmingham, only crap".

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

Leicester really has come along way with it's 'scene' and as soon the world gets over Kasabain maybe people will give this little East midlands backwood the credit it so deserves. There are so many good bands here at the moment it's actually frightening.

Thoguh, as a member of Public Relations Exercise I am probably bias.

Fac is; Leicester does rock. It is not a shit Birmingham, but rather a good Coventry...

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

without the post modern shopping centre and the burger bar on stilts.

leicester is emerging, principally because people seem to have stopped fighting between themselves and are learning that as a majority they'll bring themselves greater attention.

and some really good bands have emerged.

perhaps finally we'll see some band reviews which dont mention the words

kasabian / showwaddywaddy / tj's burgers / gary lineker / walkers crisps.

and if anyone ever tells you a kasabian gig in leicester is amazing... then they are most probably a convicted football hooligan judging by the audiences i've seen

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

Leicester's always had a smattering of great venues, so about time some good bands started coming though. Not to mention a couple of classic indie nightspots.

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

most people seem over the age of 25 (like me) seem to have a soft spot for the fan club

did you know sonic youth played the opening night of the fan club in 1986.......i kid you not...

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

yay - have lived in leicester for the last five (almost six - jesus!) years but its really been in the year or so that i've actually discovered the *scene*. and there really is a lot of stuff going on but like a lot of the music/art/whatever goings on in leicester it needs just a slight nudge and maybe a bit of investment to really get those just outside the *scene* really involved and taking notice.

ideas?

or am i talking shit?

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

Ah the Fan Club.

*weeps real tears of nostalgia*

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

I'm not sure but I think I met Saffron from Republica there once. DrunkXcore.

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

i was once threatened to be chopped up with a samurai sword in both the fan club and sumo. also, someone once threatened to beat the fuck out of me in fanclub.a big ape like man he was.i was only collecting glasses as i used to work there.but at the saving moment, some random other guy decided he wanted to fight aswell and rugby tackled the ape man down the stars.i just stood and watched them fall all the way like damien from the omen, and felt quite cheered up when they both broke their arms and noses at the bottom of the stairs

Queen Marys Revenge - Queen Marys Revenge

*fears calla*

+cousin scampi
+mirror! mirror! (although they're from nuneaton i think leicester should try and adopt them)
