Hello everyone...
Does anyone know of any bars or pubs or anything (!) in London where I can listen to Post rock music (like Mogwai, Sigur Ros, Godspeed You Black Emperor etc.) or at least something close to post rock music?
Thanks in advance...
God i wish i knew of one. i really don't think they exist, for 2 reasons:
1. You can't really listen to it in social situation. it is chilled out or sombre music.
2. It doesn't have, or lend itself to any possible existence of, a 'scene'. Post Rock is a loose term to describe quite individualistic music of a general kind. it is not like hardcore or black metal, which has a strictly defined sound and goal
A guy in Winchester who DJed at a $hit gig played Godspeed You Black Emperor once. But he mixed it into a gabba demo by nervous_testpilot. And I heard a student pub DJ play Mogwai once. But that's it. Why would you want to listen to post-rock in a pub situation? It would make no sense.
Not really pub music is it? you might find some indieish pub that has some mogwai on the jukebox i guess. Or a pub that has vaguely indie DJs that slip in the occasional bit of post rock that isnt quite as drawn out and unsuitable as godspeed or whatever.
Isn't post rock a bit past it now anyway? just seems to be a bunch of people rehashing the formula these days.
Your best bet is go to the shows and wait around outside for some bearded shoegazers in converse with messenger bags and duffelcoats to hand you photocopied flyers... heh. Or put something on yourself if you're that keen on the idea, it's not as hard as it sounds.
Really I think it's the kind of genre that you either go see live or you listen to in your bedroom, though.
I am mainly looking for bars and I only said "pubs" to show you people that I have searched everywhere but I haven't been able to find ANY places at all... but I think, ok this is London there should be something! I come from a half a million city in Greece (Thessaloniki) and I know of a couple of places that play that sort of post rock music, with long atmospheric verses and build ups to guitar crescentos and everything (from Mogwai to Slint, and from Durutti Column to Arab Strap...)
Anyway, thanks for your posts everyone, if you ever come accross any such place just let me know...
There's a new club starting up next Wednesday on The Queen Mary Boat, at the Yacht Club at Temple Pier. Not only will there be post rock sounds but the bands will possibly fire your imagination if you're into that type of thing. It's called Dirty Bombs, and the bands for the first night are

yeh, i'm a huge post-rock fan (check my profile) but i don't think i'd go to a pub that played JUST that sort of music, because it would be boring. A venue were they played ATP like stuff would be cool (there the social in nottingham that has some diverse stuff but not sure about London)
I'm looking forward to this gig (I'm in EOE). I've always thought that listening to MBV's Loveless is like being pleasantly seasick. Now I can have the same sensation with playing!
As for post-rock places in London? Hmm, I dunno. There's a real local-yokel type pub in Newport in Shropshire that had the Vanilla Sky soundtrack on its jukebox for a while. Though tempted, I never put Svefn-G-Englar on.

7:30 - 2 £3-£4 on the door.

The Exploits of Elaine are awesome, so it's worth the ticket price just for them - not sure about the other bands, but it looks mighty fine!
