maddening things venues do...

Don't you just hate it when venues let the first act of an evening go on and on and then squeeze the next or even headline act into oblivion?
Last night I travelled from Brighton up to The Metro Club, Oxford St, in London to see Moses. They had been told they had 40 minutes, but they barely got 25 (I know because I was watching the time for my train home). So how come the first act (though lovely) got to play for longer?
And the sound person dealt with the situation most unprofessionally, telling them off over the PA for cracking jokes (a large part of their massive charm) and giving unclear directions before turning on the house music abruptly.
Funny how he'd disappeared when I got to his booth...

It makes you wonder somtime how much they really care about the music and the bands playing. Something reverse happened to us the other day at a London venue, we get to the venue in plenty of time for the other bands to turn up late (and we're the ones who had to travel 120 miles or so for the gig!) yet nothing is said - yet when 25 mins came they were telling us we only had time for one more song - you think there would be a little leeway considering we had brought most of the people in. Not to mention moody door staff, a disinterested Sound Engineer falling asleep during all of the sets! The Promoter not being their etc...

I know that some venues have issues about running over but say at the Metro would it have been that big a deal? What time did the gig end? And what time did Moses finish up?

No way! That's harsh! Never seen that done before. Bar Stewards!

How about - no beer in the room the gigs on in.........De Montfort in Leicester!

alot of london promoters dont care about the music anymore, alot of them charge bands (alot of) money up front which they dont see unless they bring 30 or 50 people through the door, so on those 18+ gigs on a weekday it makes it very hard to do if you're an out of town band, the only way to get ur money back is to bring a big expensive coach, and the whole point of playing away from home is to make new fans. But you do also get some really nice london promoters who are still in it for the music :D

£3 for a shit pint at the Academy chain. In fact most venues run a truly shit bar - basic beyond belief. Rubbish table wine and only Bells whisky. And no chance of a bloody mary (unless you want just a thimble of tomato juice and vodka for £4).

And they relegate any band that plays on a friday or saturday to pre-club entertainment, getting them offstage at 10pm sharp, which means people often miss the support and walk in half way through the main band's set.

At the rescue rooms I went to see Enon - it was a friday night and Enon were on at £7 on the door. The price dropped to £4 for the afterclub. The room was empty for Enon then everyone piled in for the club. What a mess.

i was at that gig john (not all of it but still payed £7), and felt exactly the same way. What annoys me is when the venue makes the bands start later so more people get in (like what happened there with Mew and Mono) but still make the bands finish at the same time, leaving a smaller set. I'm hoping the same doesnt happen at the silver mt zion/little wings gig there, as the bands have to finish at 10:15. Because of the length of their songs, ASMZ will only be able to play five or six songs anyway.
