The UK Music Hall of Fame (yes, that nonsense that was on the TV last year... Robbie Williams is better than Radiohead etc) is to open its doors to both croaking crooner Bob Dylan and the late John Peel later this year.

Dylan will be a standard inductee, while Peel will join the likes of Madonna, The Beatles and Michael Jackson in the Hall of Fame as an honorary member.

Channel 4 is to screen another series of programmes focusing on artists deemed worthy of inclusion by over 60 industry movers and shakers.

** In related news, John Peel's record collection is to feature in a documentary to mark the first anniversary of his death. Researched by his son Tom Ravenscroft the one-hour show will focus on his priceless vinyl collection, telling the stories behind the artists and songs.

I'll bet you my right, no wait left (I'm not that sure) arm that they wouldn't be putting Peel in if he was still alive.

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

yep, i'd second that, but not offer any limbs though.
Not because i'm unsure, just 'cos i quite like my arms. They're useful.

That programme was fucking infuriating. Plus teasing me with including some truly brilliant artists - Public Enemy, Prince, Radiohead - but with your own knowledge that they'll get barely any votes. Bah.

Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

He's a legend in everyone's eyes anyway, he doesn't need that sort of micky mouse accolade. I miss him....

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

i miss him too. It sounds sad but the radio's nowhere near as good without him :(

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

He was the only part of radio 1 i was interested in. tis a shame, where are all the DJ's with taste (or allowed to play records at the wrong speeds/actually play what they want?)

There are some good internet college radio stations ive found. They Play all kinds of stuff.

Like your favourite granddad...

Who rates John Peel ? Average of 209: 5 Stars

:)

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

Fullerov gave him 2 and a half! He's a punk.

Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

I should bloody hope so.
I couldn't believe Dylan wasn't in there in the first place - the man invented rock.
More cerebral than pop, more artful than rock n' roll... That thin, wild, mercury sound.

Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

I miss Peel so much. After he died, the director of Radio 1 said that although it hadn't been discussed, he had it in his head that Peel would be with them until at least the age of 75...

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

Somehow I always imagined that he would always be doing his show, even when I was old.

Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

This article is cool.

11.56: Here’s the promised finale: the ‘death metal monstrosity’ in the ungodly form of Norway’s Gore Lord and their popular chart smash ’Force Fed on Human Flesh’. It is utterly magnificent, and a good taster for the following programme.

Still, John Peel, God bless his records played at the wrong speed.

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

That's a great piece.

John has heard of Merzbow and Melt Banana but not Jimmy Eat World. What a strange planet he inhabits. I want to go there.

i wonder what happened to that writer...

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

I'm listening to Peel just now, 2/10/96. Looks as though PJ Harvey's coming up then David McAllum, Man From UNCLE, Sapphire And Steel, etc. Where else could you get such a mix ?

Things like UK Hall of Fame and Top 100 Albums of all time are obvious marketing ploys. Raise the competition stakes. Robbie Williams gets his ugly mug across to even more fools with too much loose change.

My own opinion is the only one that counts to me. Therefore in my own opinion the whole concept of a UK Hall of Fame is complete illogical guff. Not only that it is puerile amnesia. And Top 100 Albums is completely meaningless.

'What's the matter?'

'No.'

Music can never be objective. All taste is subjective. I listen to what I like to hear. Full stop.

Before anyone says the predictable: 'But you could be turned onto an album or artist that you never would have heard about before...waffle waffle.' All you have to do is sniff around any decent record store and look at the names of recording artists and buy what sounds good. If it's a pile of sterile pus when you play it, bad luck. Never buy that artist again. Considering all of the 'Top 100 Albums' and the UK Hall of Fame, merely consist of the most popular, and overrated icons for nostalgia, they really are not going to aid someone who would like, for exampl, Les Georges Leningrad...

One severe gripe I have (as opposed to my severe grippe) is that www.Emusic.com became a complete sell-out piece of sputum. If only I could get more of the music from those artists, if only I had more filthy lucre...etc etc

Down with the UK Hall of Fame!
Down with the Top 100 Albums of all time!
For the rebirth of the Emusic website!

I don't have time to go to a record store an listen to every single record ever released to find out what I want to listen to. In fact, unless you're paid precisely to do so, no-one has. For that reason, I relied on John Peel to play things I would never, in a billion years, thought of listening to, or had the chance to listen to. Yeah, these Hall of Fame and Top 100 things are bollocks. But you can't rely on looking at a list of records and just decide "what looks good". You need to hear it, and John Peel provided that service.

Peel's legacy isn't dead - there are loads of internet and satellite radio stations springing up that carry on his legacy. Down with cynicism towards music, and down with cynicism towards celebrating music. I'll sift through an ocean of shite to hear something that puts my life into context.

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

Er, if I was being cynical I think that I would really just say: The idea of a UK Hall of Fame is a fantastic idea, it really provides people with a insightful list of the most interesting artists around, so go buy into it.

But what I was actually saying if you cared to take the time and work it out is this: There are loads of excellent artists out there who get NO recognition whatsoever on things like a UK Hall of Fame or greatest albums etc etc and are actually a thousand times more relevant and interesting and excellent etc etc.

Yes John Peel did play a lot of music that a lot of people wouldn't have been able to hear before. I was not actually having a dig at the old boy. But do you really think that he would want to be included in something as naff and chronically ridiculous as a UK Hall of Fame?

The best idea would be to follow his lead. If you genuinely care about celebrating music as you put it, then go out and find bands that are out there, that do mean something to you, and start a fanzine, or internet radio station, or whatever. Carry out the good man's legacy.

Or just let a bunch of cynical old hacks put together a hackneyed list of obvious bands and musicians who they are trying to sell as worthy of being in a UK Hall of Fame.

I agree completely- UK music hall of fame = absolute bollocks (tho I bet the other stations wish they thought of it first).

Last years 'ceremony' was a ridiculous affair. We had a rather confused Priscilla Presley, Madonna and George Martin on the stage, whilst- yup, yup vernon Kay and June Sarpong accepted the award for Michael Jackson.

Verdict = utter shit.

Shame on you channel 4, shame.

Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

Its deserved on both their parts. But the Uk music hall of fame was a joke from start to finish.

Whatver do you mean? I mean, take this year's Brits: 'Angels' by Robbie Williams clearly IS the greatest song ever written by any human being, ever!

Yep, integrity is alive and well and shoving a crack pipe up Pete Doherty's arse.

Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

Welcome to comedy music hall with our special guest seymourmba!

Put some lard on your 'angels' CD, give it a spin, and it sounds just like Crocodile Shoes by Jimmy Nail...

I advise you try this seymourcormba before you start dribbling in a corner over kate moss and pete doherty's latest spastic indulgence. Who knows you may even find yourself a new carer to nurse you...

Time to create my own top 100 woeful albums list....oh hang on a minute it's already been copyrighted by the ever-revolutionary and subversive Channel 4! But they have named it The Top 100 albums. Shame that all my hard work amounted to nought. Bit like your ideas on music really seymourbutters eh? eh? eh?

'What's the matter?'

'No.'

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

so there was once this thing called irony, right, and...
oh no matter.

Re: Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

Haha, that's brilliant Thommo! The sarcasm is strong in this one.

Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

It sure is wonderful that people like HerrVonW can master all the pretentious terminology and vocabulary they see fit, type long and cynical articles, sit back and laugh at how clever they are and still completely miss the point.

Peel and Dylan join UK's Hall of Fame

And its all very wonderful that a sad sonic youth fan can master nothing and paste a complete turgid pile of tripe as an attempt at rebuttal.

I doubt if I would sit back and laugh at my own intelligence somehow. But I know for a fact that I will be sitting back laughing at your insipid foolishness.

And once again I was not been cynical or even particularly long-winded - although in this day of the five-second soundbite even a 10 second reply is seen as confusing and over-elaborate to sad art-rock loons like yourself...
