So what exactly did happen to Supergrass, the boys who liked to keep their teeth nice and clean whilst getting caught by the fuzz?

It seems they’ve not only gone and made that sensible and mature fifth album that every band past their sell-by date inflicts on their effervescently loyal fans, they’ve actually made a record that would be more appropriate in an old folks’ home than your local indie niterie.

‘Road To Rouen’ apparently took two years to complete, and while it would be harsh to criticise the standards of musicianship throughout the record – indeed the likes of ‘Tales Endurance (Parts 4, 5 & 6)’ and ‘Roxy’ are built around the ideal that complexity is the key – the lack of any real spark or tune worth mentioning (or humming for that matter) sticks out like a sore thumb after being embroiled in a tussle with Kyran Bracken for 80 minutes.

You see, the thing with Supergrass is that no one expects a reinvention of the wheel or even a changed tyre for that matter. If anyone wanted an example of a band who have found a strident formula without any need whatsoever for even the most minor alteration its these guys, so why they’ve felt the need to write something that in places is more akin to folk night at the local Ukrainian Social Club (‘Coffee In The Pot’) is beyond me, and totally beyond redemption for that matter.

I guess the warning signs were there when lead single ‘St. Petersburg’ came limping out of the radio like an Alzheimer’s sufferer on a Zimmer frame last month, so pedestrian is it’s almost churlish saunter that it’s accompanying motif should be a red circle with a car in it. Indeed, walking pace takes up the first half of the album, as ‘Sad Girl’ and ‘Roxy’ saunter by almost unnoticed, and proceedings don’t actually liven up until we’re actually 2/3 of the way through the record on the title track itself, which along with the jaunty ‘Kick In The Teeth’ harks back to the halcyon days of ‘In It For The Money’.

Sadly, the respite is all too brief as ‘Low C’ sounds like it was recorded one boozy Saturday evening round at Chas and Dave’s local and ‘Fin’ is a self absorbed lullaby that sings itself to sleep halfway through the middle eight.

“I just keep on trying” insists Gaz Coombes on ‘Kick In The Teeth’. Sadly, ‘Road To Rouen’ is the sound of a band that is trying just a tad too hard to be old before their time, and as a result, makes this their least accessible album to date. As disappointments go, this is on a par with Forest’s relegation last May and James Blunt’s eternal residence at pole position in the charts. Yes, that bad. Next.

Supergrass - Road To Rouen

One of Denmark's weakest bands I feel.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Dude, they're from W-A-L-E-S!

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Oxford wasn't in W-A-L-E-S the last time I looked... Try E-N-G-L-A-N-D ;o)

Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Say it aint so.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

I know Dom has a dislike for almost everything Supergrass has released since I Should Coco so I'm gonna buy this anyway and make my own judgement.

I liked the single!

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Not strictly true there.
I thought 'In It For The Money' and 'Life On Other Planets' were good records in their own right.
My opinion on Supergrass started to wain after seeing their half-hearted performance culminating in a dreadful acoustic version of 'Caught By The Fuzz' on last year's greatest hits tour.
This album does nothing for their credibility or reputation and only the most tolerant of diehard fans would bother to touch it again three months down the line.
Trust me!

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

I don't like it when bands get bored of playing certain songs and try to do them differently just for the sake of it, because, invariably, they turn out shite. See the Manics acoustic Faster on their Greatest Hits tour for further proof...

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

I think Foo's are doin acoustic everlong on the tour/festival circuit...easily their best musical piece is being wasted...didn't they just release an entire acoustic album?!

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Acoustic everlong? YUK! Do bands think they gain some kind of artistic credibility by playing acoustic versions of their songs? I can't see why else they'd bother!

L-A-V!! Less Acoustic Versions!!

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

It'll be Slipknot doing acoustic versions next, you mark my words.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

The (not strictly) acoustic everlong, just dave grohl on one guitar, works very well actually. Don't knock till you've heard.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

And thats all that music is about "credibility or reputation"? No its about making music you want to make and thats what this album is, a brave stripped back good album that grows on you. Its not POP or trying hard to be something its not, thats exactly why its better than the Kaiser Chiefs.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Music is also supposed to be about entertainment, which 'Road To Rouen' sadly lacks. If this album is just about "making music you want to make" then perhaps it would have been advisable to have left the recording at Mr Coombes' house and just used it for private listenings at Christmas time and birthday parties.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Fair enough, but I beg to differ.Don't get me wrong, I don't think its amazing, I just think you were a little unfair your review read like you hadnt listened to it enough times.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

I tried mate, I really did. A few years back Supergrass were one of my favourite bands, and I accept that they can't keep churning out rehashes of past glories but sometimes there comes a moment when you have to accept it's maybe best to call it a day...

Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Quit whinging about Forest! You were rubbish last season, your squad are all average, so your relegation was unsurprising!
Anyway, Supergrass. Meh, they've always been a singles band to me, but St. Petersburg's no Moving or Grace or Alright or anything! Ho-hum.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Yes, but Brusma, thats the point!
If 'Road To Rouen' was a Nottingham Forest player it would be Marlon King or Eoin Jess - synonymous with the the worst spell in their history - as opposed to 'I Should Coco''s obvious parallels with Stuart Pearce and Stan Collymore.

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Haahaa. I listened to Road To Rouen today. I'd say it's more of a Notts Country reserve. Who's not getting paid. Because the club's going bankrupt.

Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Your way off mate this album is decent/good.

Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Poor, but getting better !!

Road to Ruin would be a more appropriate title though. Bring back the I Should Coco madness !!!

Supergrass - Road To Rouen

Certainly not one of their best but are they ever going to surpass 'In It For The Money'. Gaz Coombes is a good songwriter and there are a clutch of attractive songs on view here. I reckon it needs time to bed down. No fire yet but maybe the briefest of alarms.

Supergrass - Road To Rouen

I actually quite like this album I brought it on the strength of the following (in order)

1) Album artwork caught my eye
2) Brilliant title for the album
3) First 2 minutes of the album
4) Review above...... I like it when bands 'grow up'

I have never brought or listened to Supergrass before, but I really like it, they remind me a bit of a mellow Mystics (who are also from Oxford)

nice

Re: Supergrass - Road To Rouen

What a beautiful album, and one that doesn't care if we like it. Supergrass aren't the same band, nor should we expect them to be. They have grown in ways that we should have seen coming, and might not have expected. What more could one ask?
