To be honest, 'Troublegum' and 'Infernal Love' are the only ones I listen to these days - both classics, but I feel MBA ARE, for me, the best band in the world.
"I picked up a copy of the split 7" inch you all put out with Paton Oswalt. At first listen, the Melvins Boss Hoss sounded backwards. So I was like cool! Then I played it again, and it played normally. I was like what the fuck, am I imagining things.
So I played it again and realised what is going on. There must be two seperate groves on the record. One that plays forward, and one that plays backwards. It's all acording to where the needle lands at the beginging of the record."
s Of The Stone Age by a mile. First three albums are immense, I'll grant you Lullabies To Paralyze was a drop in form but still has some excellent songs on it.
lullabies is a joy, it just needs to be taken out of context of the first two albums. I think songs for the deaf could be their weakest. anyway lullabies= gothic odyssey!
My first love and the band that really got me into music at the tender age of 13.
I always go back to them and the music never lets me down. They really are legendary and there are very few bands that achieve that in my books.
because they embody everything good, and bad, about rock music and could make records like the filthy junkie nightmare of "Twin Infinitives" as well as making really clean sounding Stones jams like the first half of "Veterans of Disorder" and whatnot. And "Accelerator" has the best production job ever, as well as being possibly the best 'rock' record ever made. And their cover versions were always better than the originals.
or Can, for inventing a ton of shit and having my favourite rhythm section ever by a fucking stretch.
or Black Flag, because they just have all the fucking songs.
With SixBySeven headlining, yeah? I met Peel that night, never to be forgotten. Bearsuit were great, you & SBS were guff, but hey.
Back to the topic though, and it's Yo La Tengo, no contest. With Buck 65 as best solo artist. That's a good days' worth of great music for your ipod right there!
The Smiths - because as someone mentioned above - the amount of ridiculously good pop music they created in four years was phenomenal. It sometimes takes that now for some bands to release one album. Also the charisma and ability to create a cult following that still exists now. I know their artwork is pretty love or hate, but I like the way they had a style and thought about everything artistically.
If there is a better album than Fun House then I'm yet to hear it.
If I to choose a current band, then it would be the Icarus Line. Its hard to articulate how much I love this band. Reading some old Careless Talk and Loose Lips interviews and listening to the Buddyhead vinyl version of Penance Soiree last night totally reminded me. Shame the new EP sucks so much.
because her voice is to die for and her arrangements are brilliant and no matter what kind of music I'm in the mood for (folk, metal, rock, experimental, a'cappella, indie, etc) she's got 2 or more songs that fit the bill....
But as an all time album I'd live with sparklehorse-Good morning spider. It's the most complete, compelling and well produced album I've heard. From the heavy start of pig, past the pop-tastic sick of goodbyes to the beautiful hundreds of sparrows, there's something for every state of mind.
Due to the whole factor of not having much expertise with music and not having been able to love a band for several years because I havn't known what I listen to for several years then I can only really say that right now, My Bloody Valentine and Neutral Milk Hotel really can't be beaten.
IT IS
THE FUCKING FALL.
A whirling dervish of bilious and twisted logic set to a glam rockabilly disco whirl-ah.
THE FALL
altho Yo La Tengo are pretty close after last night!
Smashing Pumpkins...
used to be my fav but I actually think Jesu has moved in. They rock hard
http://www.musicemissions.com
Fugazi
Silver Jews
Pixies
or Pavement. It a tie.
yep
fugazi
TOM
WAITS, go, go now, quick, go. Mule variations.
pixies or radiohead
Radiohead
if you haven't already, get every album and stick it on your ipod. Apart from "Pablo Honey" maybe, you might not like that one.
Radiohead...
Is already in dee ipod...lol...Idioteque is awesome.
all these bands are brilliant so far...
Um.
Miss Black America.
Yep.
not
therapy?
The Dismemberment Plan
just give them a listen!
I listened to the Dismemberment Plan
today and couldn't get past the feeling that I was listening to a bunch of session musos with expensive equipment making a record for the sake of it.
go listen again!
HOW DARE YOU!!!!!
A year ago, maybe.
To be honest, 'Troublegum' and 'Infernal Love' are the only ones I listen to these days - both classics, but I feel MBA ARE, for me, the best band in the world.
ROCKET FROM THE CRYPT
punk rock 'n' roll with horns. Great stuff.
Radiohead
or Bob Dylan. No one I've ever heard comes remotely close to touching either of them.
for carnation
or tindersticks
or animal collective
or gorkys
or low
this is tough....
and the list go on and on
and on.....
Isn't
prefering The For Carnation to Slint akin to prefering Wings to The Beatles? Or at least Style Council to The Jam?
the style council
were the band the jam could have been
nope
i listen to the 2nd for carnation record much more than slint.is my favorite record ever
The Smiths
though Radiohead--and I'm embarassed to say--Up the Bracket is one of my favorite albums
Pixies
that is all
RADIOHEAD
been said but i truly believe it
Biffy Clyro
. needs no explanation.
Muse
Guided By Voices
or Neutral Milk Hotel
the flaming lips
...of corse
Thethe
obviously!
Radiohead
easily.
also bearsuit, bright eyes, my bloody valentine, the boredoms
EM BEE VEE
And of bands that are still making music: Animal Collective.
FAITH NO MORE/RADIOHEAD
Mansun
"Six" is a classic album.
Jimmy Eat World
or Trail of Dead
The Melvins
because they rock, have the best noisy bits and actually surprise/amaze me every time I hear another one of their albums.
They haven't put out a crap album or treaded water at all in 23 years. Not many bands can say that.
did you get your 7" yet?
Mine came yesterday, its awesome
Yes!
Mine came today, it's awesome and purple. I haven't listened to the comedy side yet.
Manic Street Preachers
Always have been and probably always will be!
Mine is orange
the Oswalt bside is pretty funny, but doesn't really compare to the greatness of the Melvins covering the Sonics
I just read this
"I picked up a copy of the split 7" inch you all put out with Paton Oswalt.
It's all acording to where the needle lands at the beginging of the record."
er I didn't notice that
Weird
I didn't notice it either. I just went and put mine on and I think thats right though
The Smiths
Because in a short career they created a ridiculous amount of perfect pop music.
Pretty Girls Make Graves are the best band around at the moment
Deerhoof
For being the playfully imaginative, beautifully noisy, consistently challenging yet comforting band of my dreams and then some.
BJORK
or if she doesnt count, not being a band and stuff; SLINT
pulp
and guided by voices.
dEUS -
they're better than Miss Black America, for a start. ;-)
probably
smashing pumpkins or sonic youth
Queen
s Of The Stone Age by a mile. First three albums are immense, I'll grant you Lullabies To Paralyze was a drop in form but still has some excellent songs on it.
First TWO
albums were immense.
Million Dead
hands down mother truckers
LIES
lullabies is a joy, it just needs to be taken out of context of the first two albums. I think songs for the deaf could be their weakest. anyway lullabies= gothic odyssey!
Chumbawamba
You cunts.
Ryan Adams
if that doesn't count
Smashing Pumpkins
it used to be the ramones, because they're awesome.
but now it's sonic youth.
because they're the best and every single record they make is amazing.
The Velvet Underground
My first love and the band that really got me into music at the tender age of 13.
I always go back to them and the music never lets me down. They really are legendary and there are very few bands that achieve that in my books.
I was just about
to write something very similar JungleKing - VU changed my life back when I was a spotty youth
then Sly and the Family Stone opened my ears, then Tom Waits twisted them and Nick Cave pierced them ...
and now
you look like one of those people who walks around town with a dog on a string?
or possibly
our postie - he's got the biggest flesh tunnels I've ever seen. And he smells of wee.
Sorry, I hope you're not him...
Belle & Sebastian
The Fall
By a long, long way.
Smashing Pumpkins
Modest Mouse
Royal Trux
because they embody everything good, and bad, about rock music and could make records like the filthy junkie nightmare of "Twin Infinitives" as well as making really clean sounding Stones jams like the first half of "Veterans of Disorder" and whatnot.
FAITH NO MORE
nuff said!!
tough choice
the Cure or Low.
hmmm...
sleater-kinney or prolapse or electrelane or pavement
The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band
Adem
Heavenly
Bearsuit
oingo boingo
..
I slagged off Bearsuit
after MBA played with them for Peel in Nottingham. I didn't mean it and I rather regret it now. They were ace, and I was being a coked-up prick.
I was at that show!
With SixBySeven headlining, yeah? I met Peel that night, never to be forgotten. Bearsuit were great, you & SBS were guff, but hey.
Back to the topic though, and it's Yo La Tengo, no contest. With Buck 65 as best solo artist. That's a good days' worth of great music for your ipod right there!
right now...
TV on the radio. utterly utterly unique and incredible.
Blood Brothers close second.
Ever
The Smiths - because as someone mentioned above - the amount of ridiculously good pop music they created in four years was phenomenal. It sometimes takes that now for some bands to release one album. Also the charisma and ability to create a cult following that still exists now. I know their artwork is pretty love or hate, but I like the way they had a style and thought about everything artistically.
Pixies
... I really believe that even if overnight:
1) Every other form of music previous written/recorded was destroyed
2) Humankind (inc. Black Francis) lost the ability to compose/play any new music
... I would still listen to music every day of my life and never tire of Pixies.
I really like this
thread for some reason. More people should answer the question. MORE!
Iggy and the Stooges
If there is a better album than Fun House then I'm yet to hear it.
If I to choose a current band, then it would be the Icarus Line. Its hard to articulate how much I love this band. Reading some old Careless Talk and Loose Lips interviews and listening to the Buddyhead vinyl version of Penance Soiree last night totally reminded me. Shame the new EP sucks so much.
.
don't you feel like you're cheating on all your other favourite bands when you just choose one? i do
i'm going for Super Furry Animals
just because of the breadth of style they have, their imagination and the way that they're in completely their own world
(or coteau twins-radiohead-m83-my bloodyvalentine)
Yeah, totally!
I almost feel like apologising to all the other bands I like for only picking one...
SLEATER FUCKING KINNEY
Constantly inventive, rocked, awesome live and they stood for something and did something about it. I was absolutely gutted when they split.
Hefner a close second.
Freakpower
Gets me in a good mood before going out on the razzle dazzle ya see.
Yeah !
ROSE KEMP
because her voice is to die for and her arrangements are brilliant and no matter what kind of music I'm in the mood for (folk, metal, rock, experimental, a'cappella, indie, etc) she's got 2 or more songs that fit the bill....
i'm gonna be different
A little known up and coming band called Raydeo Hed.
I may have mispelt it
muse
forever
I think
on balance I would say the Beach Boys. Radiohead a close second.
Oh the pain..
Pink FLoyd...bought Wish You Were Here when I was 11 and my parents thought I might be troubled - I liked that
Grant Lee Buffalo/Grant Lee Phillips - if I could sing I would like to sound like him - the sexiest male voice I've ever heard
I got a new favourite every other week
But as an all time album I'd live with sparklehorse-Good morning spider. It's the most complete, compelling and well produced album I've heard. From the heavy start of pig, past the pop-tastic sick of goodbyes to the beautiful hundreds of sparrows, there's something for every state of mind.
Final Fantasy
Cat Power
Maybe.
My Bloody Valentine?
WHY CAN'T I ANSWER THIS?
Animal Collective?
i'll answer for you
my bloody valentine.
EASY !
:D
Heck
Due to the whole factor of not having much expertise with music and not having been able to love a band for several years because I havn't known what I listen to for several years then I can only really say that right now, My Bloody Valentine and Neutral Milk Hotel really can't be beaten.
But who the hell knows how I'll feel a year on.
Why has no one mentioned
mclusky yet? Marvellous. Although the answer to your question is actually "Pixies, easily"
I've counted
6 for Pixies, them winning this poll, Smiths second.
This clearly means that Pixies are the best band ever.
ANYBODY CARE TO DISAGREE
lkjlkj
um, Earth, or Talulah Gosh.
tough
radiohead, or possibly the cribs.
