A number of music magazines have received a boost from ABC (the Audit Bureau of Circulations), as newly published half-yearly sales figures in The Guardian show that the likes of Mojo, rock sound and Metal Hammer are selling far more copies now than in recent years.

Metal Hammer, for example, has scored the biggest yearly circulation growth of any music title, up 20.9% to 40,236 copies per month. The Emap-owned Mojo has seen monthly sales soar to 114,626, putting it second behind Q in the grand music monthly scheme. rock sound, now an independent publication, has seen 2005's figures improve upon 2004's by an impressive 11.3%, putting monthly sales at a healthy 22,305.

Elsewhere, the NME enjoyed a 5% boost, scoring some 73,640 sales per week, and Kerrang!'s sales have risen by just over 3%.

Stuart Williams, publishing director of Emap's music titles, said: "There's a lot going on in the market - kids are going to concerts and buying records. Go to any town in the country and you'll see kids walking around with guitars rather than record bags. Now there are 16 year-olds buying Beatles tracks and 60 year-olds buying Radiohead and the White Stripes."

That's an interesting read. How many does Kerrang shift each week?

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Havent red the NME in so long, dunno what genre we belong

Sorry i had to get that it :-)

so much for print being dead...

73,640 idiots and counting...

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

About a year ago Kerrang was practically matching NME sales figures. I will check it out.

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Kerrang according to ABC Website sells 64,500 roughly a week.

For all the fiqures if numbers are your thing

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

I'm pretty sure that the article linked here says that the sales figures indicate how many copies of each magazine have been sold during the past 6 months, so to take an example, the NME hasn't been doing 72,640 sales per week, more like 3,000 odd.

The listings below are based on figures released today by the Audit Bureau of Circulations, including total sales and relevant year-on-year change.

i really should stop buying kerrang, i can honestly say i havent 'enjoyed' one of their weekly shitzines in months. Maybe its the new editor.

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Who is editor of Kerrang! now?
I should probably know this, yes?

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

I havent bought the NME in months and thats all that matters ha ha

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

I would by MOJO again if they brought back the crossword. Now THAT was a tasty little puzzle.

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

thats great, and whats more, that particular copy of rocksound is the most deserving of your money this month :)

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Rocksound is the only oen that matters here

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Agreed. rocksound is back on form after a slightly dry patch around the end of last year. I've bought every issue since early 2002. So, like, rock on.

God bless rocksound.

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

I prefer Rock Sound to the other ones for sure, the free CD obviously being a big incentive. They do give WAY to much coverage to average American punk/punk rock/hardcore fans though.

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

The sales figures are what they sell in a week, not the cumulative sales over a 6 month period, in reply to someone earlier in this thread.

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

so did that article deliberately avoid comparing kerrang and nme's circulations?

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Absolute crud that Rocksound is the only mag that matters - maybe if you are comparing to purely Kerrang....

NME had been utterly clueless for a long time - The Vines debacle meant that the paper had to fight its way back to credibility but I reckon they've done a good job lately and most weeks have a good deal of interest (for me anyway) - and the rediculous trumpeting of total bores Oasis seems on the downturn.

They cottoned on to Bloc Party fairly quickly and have given the decent new bands (Maximo, Rakes, Bloc, etc etc) a good deal of column inches whereas Rock Sound has conspicously failed.

The Rocksound review section is excellent but they go around trumpeting any old rope that remotely registers on the rock radar and most of it is utter poo.

Have you listened to their terrible CDs?
Every month I hope for something half interesting on there - thank goodness for Forward Russia!

For my money the best (non web) read is The Fly.
Always clued up always excellent always ahead of NME / Rocksound for new music.

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

the rock sounds cds are terrible if you have a problem stomaching innovative and challenging rock bands like Pelican and Devil sold his soul and would prefer awful soundalike AOR indie bands like Maximo park and the Rakes.

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

The Fly are bloody clueless. Any band starting with 'The' automatically gets a good review...

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

I still like the NME. Best place to find out about new music and some interesting articles. And the back page is good for a giggle.

Therefore, NME = good.

These are good times indeed, any person expressing a love of music is fantastic.

Drop the wall of perception, love music in any form if it resonates in your soul.
Hahaha, listen to me.

Nah, but the joy is in having a 14year old girl come up to you when you work in a record shop telling you she loves Busted...the possibilities are endless.

People are no longer scared by a wee bit of fuzz on the old guitar, and the mainstream audience are beginning to enjoy impassioned voices again (Jack White, Kele Bloc etc).

Looking back, the 90's were a dark time for music. Fantastic for building a burning soul in and lust for music, but awful for the tripe we endured....and loved.
Long live the Deftones!

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Rock Sound is the shit, wooooh rock sound. a little too much my chemical romancing but still woooooh.

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

rocksound are a little too obsessed with promoting new bands ALL the time and it gets tedious when 90% of them are utter bollocks
i still feel kerrang is good, maybe there features are a little too basic and they dont cover enough 'good' bands (by that i mean bands which arent good charlote or my chemical romance). their album reviews section is as good as rocksounds anyday

NME is still utter shit, there more of a fashion magazine than music i feel
they just pander to what londoners want to read in a magazine

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

I personally really like Rock Sound in many ways. It's genre based reviews are plentiful and it has good easy to read features. And they write about unsigned bands I like and put them on their CDs. And Victoria Durham writes for them. And Mike Diver. It's brilliant, come to think of it. Just my opinion. It's the only mag that is wide eyed and varied and can make me feel excited - IE it doesn't feature PD or CB every week. Oh, and by the way circulation figures are freely available on http://www.abc.org.uk, if anyone's interested...

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

the only mag i bother with these days is terrorizer... kerrang is still the smash hits bollocks that is has been for years, nme is rubbish, used to be great with really funny coulndt give a shit writing in it but thats gone. terrorizers great coz theyre not scared to tell it like it is, theyre the only mag that ive seen slag trivium off as the boring metallica copyists that they are, and that i respect. plus they review the most off the wall stuff ever, shame is i can hardly ever find these mad records!

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Yeah, I'll just slag the NME to make myself look cool.

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

No one has mentioned ARTROCKER magazine...
Its currently fortnightly but will go weekly at somepoint.

Its has a wide spectrum of opinions unlike some of the editorial led tosh of the 'big two'
it reminds me of what the NME used to be like a long time ago - or Sounds or Melody Maker - also a long time ago

Check it out - and buy it! (most small record shops, borders etc)
www.artrocker.com

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

artrocker uses the word 'angular' too much though. rant magazine is a good read, not strictly speaking a music magazine but it good.

Artrocker and DiS are both great, but NME is editorially in a better state than it has been for a long while. They deserve that 5% increase - its a better mag than it was this time last year. If only they'd drop the whole Pete Doherty thing and face up to the fact he's a talentless crack fuelled tramp I could take them more seriously. They've done a great job getting behind Bloc Party, Kaiser Chiefs, The Futureheads this year, all great bands (that were first championed by DiS).

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Metal Hammer's readership is growing. Soon they'll be adults. Haha! hahaha! etc.

Frankly, I couldn't give a toss about music magazines. Got a damn good source of info right here: the news is more up to date, the coverage is more varied than any print mag, it doesn't cost a thing, and it's far easier to ignore the bits I don't want to read. Free CDs are pointless too, when I can download entire albums for nowt.

Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

aye but you can't read DiS on the bog can ya? unless you can

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

Yeah, but who wants to read DiS on the bog? People who don't buy Viz, that's who.

Re: Rock rags record best-ever sales figures

i like so bought plan b today, it pleased and exhilarated me greatly

Kerrang!

could i ask what was the selling figures(weekly) for kerrang magazine in 2002?
