This really rather swanky CD from Birmingham four-piece Mr Nobody is technically a demo, but it's clearly one with a fair whack of budgeting clout behind it. Less about the tunes than it is about the low-intensity white-outs full of such novel effects as modem dial-tones and the click of extractor fans, it creates a drifting, unfocused noise over which the rather put-out vocals howl and grouch. Coming across as more melting-pot-luck than it does deliberate composition, on first listen it strikes one as definitely surreal and possibly even avant garde. But is it good?

Well... almost. Sometimes. The problem with this EP is that it never feels very coherent, very focused. It almost gives the impression that the band members are trying to out-freak each other – that rather than attempting to create a group impact they're competing to be the weirdest. And when an EP’s so fuzzy and white-out-heavy as this one, you really need some sense of group cohesion and drive in order to hold the listener's attention. Without that, all there is to listen to is a group of people fucking around with weird effects. Which is very clever... but spend much time listening to people being Clever At You and it's hard not to feel them to be smug gits.

Of course, I don't know whether Mr Nobody actually are smug; it's quite likely that they aren't. But this EP is – and because of that, Mr Nobody's wall-of-noise wow-factor quickly fades in the mind to leave nothing but an itchy residue of boredom and irritation. The ingredients for an impressive band are there, it's just that they don't cohere. But they could; if Mr Nobody work out how to record something which sounds like a band pulling together rather than like a load of musicians improvising at weirder-than-thou cross-purposes, they could impress. As things stand, however, they don't quite make the grade.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

They're not Smug in anyway, they're actually wonderful guys and highly creative! It's not straight up music. If you fancy beeing challenged and moved through music, they're up your street. Yes each track has a different blend to it, but theres enough between them to make it coherent ithink.

I absolutely love this ep, make sure to catch them live as they're immense. September 30th Bar Accademy, Brum.

i saw this band supporting Editors with i forward, russia!. They mentioned they were last minute replacements, I hope that was the reason they were incredibly unbearable. There was not one melody and the chanted lyrics were embarrassingly sub Radiohead(that is a cheap shot but one impossible to ignore). I remeber "I feel a little frustrated" being roared into my skull. Also, I dont believe anyone could look at their website with a straight face.

Sure they're nice though.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

You're clearly not listening properly. It's a grower and you've obviously not given it much of a chance.

As for the 'not one melody' thing. THat actually is bollocks.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

How about you're not listenning properly?

P.S. you spelt 'true' wrong. its spelt t r u e. not b o l l o c k s.

Are you going to defend their website?

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

I didn't realise that a bands website made a difference to how their music sounds?

You don't like them, that's fine. i do... so i'll go play the ep now.....

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

Seems Like Jelas is on a witch hunt seeing as he/she signed up just to swipe mr nobody, who incidentally are the nicest fellows and dont deserve 'Jelas' people doing this to them. They are too clever for you.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

and James Brough cant write melodies? hahahahaha stupid twat.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

I said I dont like them, thats no reason to call Jim Brough a stupid twat.

If he can write melodies why wont he sing them.

About the website. I'm not saying that the website should affect how the music sounds, but if you're at a gig and the band playing sound like they might be ridiculously pretentious or may be thoroughly sincere but just not very good: Its quite useful that their website confirms any negative suspiscions you might have.

I enjoyed the intro to their first song, it sounded like 'Boys, you wont' by the Wrens.

If only they'd written 'Brian the vampire', we could all be happy.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

It is up to you if you don't like them but what I couldn't understand was why someone would go through all the effort of signing up to say so. There are plenty of bands who deserve this but Mr. Nobody are respected by alot of people. I don't think they try to be for everyone but how anyone can knock such fine and technical musicians is beyond me. If they sounded like Joy Division or any of the other fads that are going on then you would seem justified in your comments. There is a reason they are respected.

I know why you don't like them now. You find them pretentious. Ive seen a lot of bands that I know are really good but I just want to detest them. It's human nature.

I once asked one of them what the story on the website was about he laughed and shrugged his shoulders, he found it amusing I had bothered to read it.

I just really like them and feel I have to say so.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

They do seem like nice people. they seem a bit clever clever (a vague description I know) for the sake of it. I dont think declaring how respected they are is a strong defence, but I see they're close to your heart.

I didnt sign up just to knock. I've read this site for a while and I've only just bothered registering. I dont want to be one of those people who only comes on to waste everyone's time like the people who defend oasis.

I think they should do something about their website if its not representative of them.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

They're merely trying to push the old musical boundaries, I mean it's about time don't you think?

You're obviously entitled to your opinion, but in these annoying days of Franz Ferdinands dicso stomp plop rock and fucking Pete Doherty being hailed as some kind of musical genius they are a breath of fresh air. But to say they are devoid of melody is actually wrong, I've known these guys for a long time and they're not being clever for the sake of it, they're just clever. It's better than being a bunch of fucking amateur goons like the shit the NME tell you to buy.

Listen to One Silly Boy Prize and tell me thats not melodic.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

I dont know what you think I am, but I dont read the nme.

I listened to that song, its different to anything i heard at the gig but I dont think its really special. The vocal isnt that melodic, the guitar part is pleasant and thats where the tune is coming from. The 'all the trees...' melody is nice but it'd be sweeter if it was used a little less, do you reckon?

Its a nice song though. I didnt think thay could do understated.

Being amateur or professional has nothing to do with good music.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

Being amateur or professional has nothing to do with good music.

Yes and good is what the listeners perception is. That's why I said they are respected. People like them so you saying they're shit is not the final verdict and you seem bright enough to agree with that?

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

My initial opinion is merely my opinion, I cant see how a final verdict would help anyone.

The band are clearly sure of what they're doing themselves so all the best to them.

At the moment though, I didnt enjoy their live set and wasnt as impressed by 'one silly boy prize' as I wanted to be considering how lauded it is.

As for good or bad being the listener's perception, I'm sure you'll agree that isnt always true. Blunt?

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

When I saw them I wasnt particularly impressed. Seemed a bit style over substance.

Mr Nobody - Sweetings EP

Just had a listen to the track on their website, and think it's very impressive, personally. There's one section, around 1:30, where it goes a bit crap and pointless, but the way it flits and transforms seamlessly throughout is very admirable.

Rubbish...

Mr Nobody are so up their own arse it's quite untrue. As if spelling was so important, they float around with a smugness and agenda known only to themselves. They may be able to write complicated music, but that doesn't mean by default I have to like it, or if I indeed don't, that i'm some kind of idiot... Though I am...

As for the guys themselves, 2 out of 4 isn't bad... I guess it's only fitting and correct that they've now broken up...
