new track online by best new band

Arctic Monkeys are my mates and simply the greatest unsigned band around now. They have a new full song to download on their site called Scummy. They also have 15 record labels chasing them at the mo!

believe the hype. Downloads here:

See the truth!

  • Re: new track online by best new band

15 record companies chasing them. In what capacity? Chasing them away from their premises with large sticks?
    • Re: new track online by best new band

have you listened to the tracks?
      • Re: new track online by best new band

        Yes.

They're not my cup of tea at all, though they are better than Razorlight (marginally). It's just that it annoys me when I hear things like "they've got 12047190 record companies interested in them and are set to tour East Timor with the bassist from Shed Seven's new band" and the like.
        • Re: new track online by best new band

Yeah, looking at your profile I can see why they're not your cup of tea.

It was my fault, I should've mentioned the fact they were indie so you'd steer clear. If you're not into the genre, you're not in a position to make a judgement on how good they are because you're subject to cynical prejudice.

Their lyrics are truly amazing though, in a real northern way, that's something that can't be denied. They got the whole Pulp thing goin' down.

It might annoy you that they have record company interest, but it doesn't stop it from being true. I met the guy from Sony myself, so know it's true. They've been offerred several single deals and turned them down cos they're waiting for a full album deal.

Anyway, fans of proper english gutair based indie should definitely check em out. However if your tastes are similar to Mr Rio's here (check his profile), steer well clear. Disclaimer done :)
          • Re: new track online by best new band

My flatmates will be listening to them in a year then, if what you say is true.
            • Re: new track online by best new band

              Yeah,

They're not and never will be the height of musical innovation, but if it's a potential CDUK number 1 indie band you want, with catchy, witty, social commentary, even catchier songs and the promise of even more to come (they're only 18), then arctic monkeys are your boys
          • Re: new track online by best new band

Yep Jared speaks the truth they are good and Dave Rio shouldn't you be doing some essay? CDUK? Top Of The Pops at least. Jools Holland would be better. The humour of the material would be lost on the former's audiences. Alot of people come on forums plugging stuff that is frankly utter shite.

Artic Monkeys are delights in a sea of dross.

            Well handled Jared : )
            • Re: new track online by best new band

              Merci Beacoup,

I'm far too handsome for internet forum flame wars :)
    • Re: new track online by best new band

When unsigned bands or their mates go on about how many record companies are interested in them and/or how they're so close to signing a deal with Universal or whatever... i don't know, i just think it's kinda shitty. I'd never dream of overtly talking about any interest my band gets and i'd dread to think of my mates doing it. No offence to the band in question, i listened to them and thought they were alright, although not really my kind of thing, but i've just seen so many bands get a couple of promising comments from a label and then start saying "oh yeah, they really want to sign us to an album deal" or whatever. It smacks slightly of showing off, and when nothing comes of it you end up with egg on your face. You just shouldn't do it. Even if just for the sole reason that if you actually *do* have lots of people coming in and giving you proper interest, it's in the band's best interests not to let any label guy/gal know exactly who they're up against.
      • Re: new track online by best new band

I kinda see your point, but again, it doesn't make anything I said less true.

The interest they've had is much more than "a couple of promising coments". As aforementioned, they've been offerred single deals but rejected them in favour of holding out for a full deal.

The band wouldn't dream of boasting about anything, they're the most humble set of boys in a band I've ever come across.

Myself, however, I want to shout from the roof tops how good they are at what they do, cos there's a whole lotta folks out there that will like them given the chance to hear them and I feel they have massive commercial potential.

I'm not afraid of ending up with egg on my face if nothing gargantuan happens for them. Whether they get a major recording contract or not, they have still made- and will no doubt continue to make- music that people dig, and I want to make the people that *will* enjoy their work (their 'target audience' in marketing parlance) aware of who they are and their songs.

I'd do this with any new/unknown/obscure band I like Pour example, I have bigged up Maximo Park and 80s garage rockers the Wolfhounds (my fave band of all time-www.thewolfhounds.co.uk) on here and have no personal association with either band. I'm not crowing saying "look at how good this band are, I'm mates with 'em, aren't I big and clever!". I loath people that try and act cool through association with talented people. I'd much rather concentrate on my own artistic talent (which, incidentally, I'm refining and striving to improve at the mo) than ride on the crest of a mates.

In conclusion, a lot of people who like witty, indie pop are gonna like this band, maybe even fall in love with them. I offer you my sincere apologies for the fact that you won't be one of them.
        • Re: new track online by best new band

          No need to apologise, really.
          • Re: new track online by best new band

Ok, 'twas a bit o.t.t of me :)
  • Re: new track online by best new band

From what i've heard of them, i'd have to agree with you about them being the best unsigned band around.
But if your their mate could you ask 'em to put the harley gig back a week (the one next monday- if it's true that its on). I'm off to edinburgh on the sunday and i've already had to sell me hope of the states tickets and i'm pissed off if i miss another great gig...

Cheers mate, i'll owe you a drink if i ever meet you
    • Re: new track online by best new band

      see the 'holy $hit' thread...
    • Re: new track online by best new band

I can do even better than that!

I can get you in to some cheeky, invite only gigs we're putting on at secret venues in the near future, if you're that desperate to see the boys. The Creme de la Creme of the Sheffield music scene will be there (ie more acts tha just Arctic Monkeys and Judan Suki-the best 2 bands in Sheff imho) if I have my way!

I'll PM you on here with the details as and when.

      • Re: new track online by best new band

If you can manage that i'll owe you about three drinks methinks
        • Re: new track online by best new band

I think I'll hold you to that then!

keep checking your personal message inbox thang
  • Re: new track online by best new band

my favourite band online are lansing-dreiden, they are as unlocal as i could get (canadian) but i am exceptionally drunk, and to keep relevance, i like desc, which is disticntly uncontroversial for a burgher.

on a totally nasty point, i hate justyfinig my music taste on this site, at the end of the day what i think is right, (this goes for everybody). and thus i only ever get involved in crap arguments.

anyway i am drunk! i know jared is a fellow wednesday supporter, so i feel we should be in a mutual good mood that our recent results are better than those of satan and his troops, give or take a division. and while our manager is scruffy, he would probably make a better model than myself. southampton should whip themselves with a kipper.

      jeez i'm hammered
      • Re: new track online by best new band

        Jared,
I've just left Shef (left uni) but am always popping back up. Are these monkeys of yours worth a visit back up for? Is there a gig at the Harley as in near the uni tram stop?
        • Re: new track online by best new band

Yep, it's the same Harley. If you wanna see not 1 but 2 famous bands before they're famous (not just Arctic Monkeys, but their bigger brothers from the 'See The Truth' scene, Judan Suki as well) get along to the gig. Monday 15h November 7.30ish.

I have every confidence that both Arctic Monkeys and Judan Suki will get recording contracts in the not too distant future (although Suki, by their own admission, need a little more work yet). They really are that good and it'll be a travesty if they don't. I'm saying that as a fan and a music geek as well as as a mate.

Check out the monkeys' tracks on the aforementioned link. Scummy really is a classic indie-pop track with uber witty lyrics
          • Re: new track online by best new band

Yea, they sound good, catchy stuff. Sheffield is breeding some interesting unique bands.

We played with 65 days of static last month, another Sheffield band who kick ass. Trying to sort a gig up there early next year, heard there are some cool alternative venues to play.

            Check us out here:

            • Re: new track online by best new band

Have the NME picked up on these guys yet?? I can completely picture them in the 'Big in 2005' thing...
              • Re: new track online by best new band

                Have they fook!

The only zine to have picked up on them so far is GodIsInTheTV (http://www.god-isinthetv.tk/) and that's only cos I write for it :)
  • Re: new track online by best new band

Just heard the tracks. Good but perhaps a little too 'Flavour of the week'. Someone compared them to Razorlight, I'd say the Lams. Nothing really special, for now !
    • Re: new track online by best new band

It may be flavour of the month, but it's rather nice. But then, I'm a sucker for anything indie with a nice tune. I like things which aren't indie too, and things without tunes, but its easiest to fall for things with tunes initially. If that made any sense.

I like the noisier bits the best, the parts where it's just guitar/voice, almost sound libertiney to me (!), whereas with the full band it souns a bit more inventive and interesting.. I guess the contrast between the little noise/big noise makes the big noise nicer though.
      • Re: new track online by best new band

i was thinking 'northern libertines' after 10 seconds, and I don't mean that in a bad way, any song that rhymes Summat with Stomach deserves some credit...
      • Re: new track online by best new band

They have even more tunes than the four on their site. They have songs called "Choo Choo!", "Mardy Bum", "A Certain Romance" and "Dancing Shoes" that are better.
        • Re: new track online by best new band

          jared
i was at boardwalk last wednesday night for it.my mate said they were good so i popped down
i was amazed.i even dropped my fookin glass and shattered it.
i cant make the harley gig though...working like a dog
im a local lad though (sunny gleadless)
when are they gonna be playin next?
          • Re: new track online by best new band

and mardy bum is bloody great.
            • Re: new track online by best new band

              Mardy Bum's about Alex's bird Jamie. She's a top lass :)
              • Re: new track online by best new band

nice.how long have they been together?
they sounded tight.good drummer as well. ithink the bass player works wiv my mates bird or umat so he told me about them he saw em at earl.
                • Re: new track online by best new band

Been together two years or so. The Drummer is called 'Elders and he's a top kid and a super sticks man. Bass player is called Andy and he's a prince among men and very talented.
                  • Re: new track online by best new band

i can honestly say iv never seen any of em in town which is unuasual cos all the "big" bandmembers normally haunt leadmill, casbah etc.
what school did they go to? im quite intrigued cos theyre f**kin ace
                    • Re: new track online by best new band

Andy the bass player's from Hillsborough, the other three are from High Green. They all went to Stocksbridge High. They don't haunt the Mill or Casbah, they're not really drinkers or clubbers or owt.
                      • Re: new track online by best new band

fair enough. when are they goin to be playin after harley?you seem to be in the know. are you a mate of the band or there manager or sumat?
  • Re: new track online by best new band

I think they're quite good. They should keep up the good work.

I have one criticism though, if I may... they look like crap. I want stars!!!! Give me fucking stars!!!! They obviously still have to form into men (kings of leon disguised it by growing beards). They look like very young scruffy kids. The singer has a really good voice. The band is tight. Good website. Good songs. Sounds like a good party. But to really "sell" like you think they should or could, they have to look like something at least. Its a fickle industry and there are thousands of bands out there... but YOU NEED THE FULL PACKAGE. I really hope they find it, it can't be contrived, it takes time... If you force shit like that people see through it. Patience will be proving. I wish them all the best.
    • Re: new track online by best new band

      3 brilliant tracks by........not a new band
go on WWW.DRYKILLLOGIC.COM and there a 3 excellent new track from their new album
      the 3 tracks are
      1.Paper Tiger
      2.Lost
      3.200 Years
    • Re: new track online by best new band

The whole point of their appeal is that they're 3 scruffy young street urchins!

You gotta see 'em on stage to believe!

Pete Doherty looks like a chav and he's a star and Carl looks like he works on a market stall with his greasy hair!
      • Re: new track online by best new band

I never thought of that about Carl before but actually its because he wears so many layers and looks like he'd be selling apples.

        KOL are stupidly pretty.

Pete does look chav in Hackett tops and Burberry lined jackets. Plus he has chav hair.

Maximo Park had their image sharpened.
        • Re: new track online by best new band

i thought they looked pretty cool when i saw em
singer is a bit like pete doherty USED to be
when he was full of beans
bass player looks mean as f*ck
drummer looked sharp nice old footy shirt like tricky trevor francis or sumat. but not a tw@.
couldn't see other guitarist from where i was stood
although it is impressive to av a band that looks the bolox you dont get that down your headphones do you?
          its all about music
and the arctic monkeys are pretty sh1thot at that.

wil pop my glad rags on and have some fun
wot otther sheffield bands u into?
            • Re: new track online by best new band

Next couple of Sheffield gigs are at the Zen Arcade (dunno where that is personally) on 12th December and Leadmill on 18th December (which I can't go to cos I'm watching Charlatans in Leeds :( )

The other main band I'm into round these parts are/were called Judan Suki (may be changing their name soon), they're playing the Leadmill on December 2nd and are v.v. good. Also keep an eye out for Trap 2, Long Blondes, Harrissons, Milburn and The Mothafuckers
              • Re: new track online by best new band

Its a bit dull for my tastes. Its been done a million times before.
                • Re: new track online by best new band

True, to an extent, they're not particularly original musically (at least not on the 4 tracks on their website, but two of their songs 'Fake Tales of San Francisco' and 'Choo Choo' are unique, the latter in particular). But I never said they were.

Lyrically however, the only people Alex is similar to are the likes of Jarvis Cocker and Moz. There's some excellent, if austere, social commentary in there and some of it puts such revered poets like Pete Doherty to shame (as much as I think the guy's brill).

Also, I did say that if you're not a fan of the genre, you're probably not going to like the band. You like Sigur Ros, I'm pretty sure their albums won't be in arctic monkeys' cd racks :)
                  • Re: new track online by best new band

But they aren't particularly breathtaking in their genre. Or they hide their best tunes !
                    • Re: new track online by best new band

Yeah, those 4 aren't there best by a long way. The 3 clips are older stuff, Scummy is new. They have a brand new demo out, as of yesterday, and it's nothing short of genius.
                    • Re: new track online by best new band

Also, on a completely different note altogether:

You like Clearlake, can I ask you why?

Cos I bought Cedars on the basis of good reviews and took it back because it was the worst album I've ever listened to in my life.

I know some people like them, but I just don't get em, can you explain what it is you like about them please?
                      • Re: new track online by best new band

Just because they can be incredibly sad and fun at the same time, just like life. And I personnaly think first album 'Lido' is far better. I havened listen to Cedars from some time now !
                        • Re: new track online by best new band

I 'spose I can see what you mean. I just didn't get their particular brand of humour, though.

Still, horses for courses and all that
                          • Re: new track online by best new band

You have seen your KOL namesake? Course they are beau, not a dodgy one among them. On the subject of the monkeys! Off to see the Charlatans? Have fun!
                            • Re: new track online by best new band

Yes, KOL (my namesake included) are all hairy, inbred, redneck fooks. Ugly as fookin' sin. I know for definite cos I just double checked on google images. If you got laid by them and got pregnant, the kid would look like Sloth from the Goonies.

But then, who am I to criticise? I'm ginger!

As for the Charlatans, I'm seeing them in L**ds and they're the 3rd of my 3 day December gig-fest. Preceeded 1st by Babyshambles in Sheffield and then by the Manics in Manchester. Funarama!
              • Re: new track online by best new band

Zen Arcade is a classic album by Husker Du! Think thats where they got the name and if you want to see a good new band check out trinovantes at www.trinovantes.com
    • Re: new track online by best new band

nice use of apartment lyrics there, ho ho
  • Re: new track online by best new band

Zen arcade is the "Uber Cool" name of a night. The Venue is the Forum on Devonshire Street, the night is the 12th December.

If you can't make it then, come to the leadmill on the 18th December where they headline the smaller stage, also playing that night are Trap 2 and lyca sleep.

    • Re: new track online by best new band

They're the best unsigned band in the country? HA HA HA! Fuck right off.

It sounds like they're overly trying to be the Libertines by playing their instruments badly and out of sync with each other.

Now Lyca Sleep, theres a band.
      • Re: new track online by best new band

Never said everybody was gonna like them. Apologies. No need to swear at me though peaches :)

However, dismissing bands on the basis of three mp3 clips and 1 full track is quite foolish. And the Libs comparisons are so bloody tired now. *Yawn*. Monkeys can play their instruments fine, you should take the cloth out yer ears.

Gawd, there's so much bitchiness when a new band comes out that makes commercial and accessible indie-pop. The Monkeys better steel themselves for more such criticism cos it aint gonna go away. Being anti-indie pop and anti pop in general is such a bourgeois pretentious music snob trait. It's about as sexy as snot.

Thanks for the tip though, will check out Lyca Sleep if I can find any MP3s.

        • Re: new track online by best new band

ah so the talentless gazumps are playin the leadmill all nighter on the 18th. oh well, guess it kinda balances out seein the mighty lyca sleep and trap2
          • Re: new track online by best new band

Trap 2 are good. Sheffield Sky EP is great

              how do you mean?
  • Re: new track online by best new band

    Very impressive.

Instantly catchy with lumps of northern humour wacked in (which I like as it all about boring london crap at the moment)

I guess it is a style of music that i like so im obviously v. biased!
  • pft.

    they'll never make it

    • AHAHAAH

      AHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      BTW link is broken.

    • lol

      they're still shit

      • It's funny

That Jared kid pretty much reminds me of every annoying Arctic Monkeys fan I've come across in the last two years. Complete lack of taste, complete belief that everything AMs ever wrote is the greatest thing ever, and complete disbelief that anyone doesn't like them.
