Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

by Sam Lewis
US rapper Kanye West critisised George Bush on live TV on Saturday on an NBC show entitled A Concert For Hurricane Relief. West was presenting a 90-second segment with funnyman Mike Myers two-thirds through the show when, to Myers' suprise, the multi-million selling rapper went off script. In an apparent reference to this news story in The New York Times (link may have expired) West exclaimed:

"I hate the way they portray us in the media. If you see a black family, it says they're looting. See a white family, it says they're looking for food."

West claimed that "they have given them permission to go down and shoot us", although he added that "the Red Cross is doing everything they can". After telling the audience that America is set up "to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off as slow as possible", West was cut off after saying: "George Bush doesn't care about black people".

An NBC spokeswoman explained the crew were "instructed to listen for a curse word, and didn't realise [West] had gone off-script". A later stement added:

"Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks. It would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."

Although the rapper's comments went out live on the east coast, they were cut from the west coast version, broadcast three hours later.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

The actual footage of this is INCREDIBLE.

I have never seen anyone look more uncomfortable than Mike Myers does once Kanye drops the bomb. His face is an absolute picture.

Kanye looks ready to burst into tears at any moment, it's really moving.

I don't think what he said could possibly overshadow what's happened though, if anything it sums up what a hell of a lot of people think.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Was it a phone in donation thing? I bet alot of people didn't donate after he said all this.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

it was on a televised red cross appeal.

the reports don't really relay the way he said it, he's clearly very very emotional, it's not something that he'd preplanned.

its not that

he doesnt care about black people.. it is just that he doesnt care at all

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

You got a link to the footage?

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

i got it from a now expired yousendit link, but googling might work...

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

I found it on google, typed in Kanye + Myers and it was about the third down.

You are right, it was amazing.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

I can't help but agree that Kanye is right. The media are painting an unrealistic picture of black looters and white people looking for food. Im sure there are white looters too, its just they dont get shown on TV because America is STILL racist to black people. This is ALL bush's fault, he is the biggest racist going

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

i think he hit on a touchy subject tho, whether true or not.
and to be fair, you dont see eminem crying on stage shouting "they never help out any white families on Extreme makeover home edition"

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

that is the most ridiculous arguement i've ever heard. Racism in America is on a terrifying scale. How can you possibly compare the plight of black and white people like that?

I know you're trying to be fair and PC or something but its comes across as an indifferent attitude to racism that means things will never change.

Well done Kanye for saying what most people think and what almost everyone of influence is too afraid to say.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

oh and i don't mean you personally are indifferent to racism, just that that kinda of reasoning implies indifference.

Peacex

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

yeh it was a joke. i agree completely with what kanye said. i jus think while the problem is persuing things didnt need aggrevating

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

I saw this when I was flicking through news channels. It was being shown on Fox, and when it came back to the studio one guy said "gee, I wonder how much money these comments will have cost the donation fund" (or words to that effect), and had a little joke about it.

Then the black presenter spoke up and said that it was unlikely to have affected anything and that these are issues that needed to be addressed. Then they cut to an ad.

Twas excellent TV.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

<a href="http://media.putfile.com/Kanye79"<This link is the video clip of it. I think he should be applauded for speaking his mind rather than what was flashed at him from a teleprompter. And you're right, Mike Myers face is brilliant as is Chris Tucker's when they cut away.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

yeah, Chris Tucker's face is pure "he said it, not me... but i'm glad someone said it"

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Shocking stuff. Good to see someone who ACTUALLY cares. It's easy to raise your profile when 'disasters' happen, like the post Live8 record sales arguments, fair play for speaking your mind! He's certainly got balls of steel.

haha Myer's face is a Picture of absolute terror.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Does anyone have an up-to-date link to the NY Times article? Would be interested in reading it. If not, anyone any idea as to what the article was saying?

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Good on him for saying what everyone else has been thinking.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

If this sort of incident happened in a richer and/or predominantly white area, I don't think it would have taken this long for a response from the Federal Government. NO was still waiting for an adequate response days after the destruction. Days. How long did it take for Bush to react to 9/11? WTC.......filled with rich, mostly white, mostly male bankers and executives.

I think Kanye has a good point and spoke out against something that many of us are thinking, but the timing was crap. Seriously.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

not meaning to be pinnickity, but calling kanye west a "raper" is surely asking for legal trouble?

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

whoops! that one slipped through the net. changed now. here's the link again:

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/05/business/05caption.html.

should work. i'll try to get it going through the article. html is a work of madness.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

At least someones talking about this now but I doubt it will resonate much with middle America. The whole race issue of modern times has never been clearer in America than right now. Practically all the people featured on TV are black and had been forced into low land housing and many were so poor they could not even afford to get a bus out of the city in time. And as for driving out, forget about it, most of the people didn't even have a car. The fact is that America is deeply divided and this has illustrated how the poor are suffering. And from this we can see how most of the poor are black families.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Read this little truth nugget in the metro today:

"In 2001, FEMA warned that a hurricane striking New Orleans was one of the three most likely disasters in the U.S. But the Bush administration cut New Orleans flood control funding by 44 percent to pay for the Iraq war."

Bush: Wadda prick!
West west well within his right.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Aparently people, black and white I hasten to add, were directed into areas by the army and police and abandoned. If they tried to approach army or police they had guns pointed at them and were told to stay back. They went looking in ordinary working class areas for anything of use they could find. On approaching wealthier areas SWAT teams appeared from nowhere with snipers on the roofs of propertys. The property of the rich is more important than the lives of the poor, black and white, nothing changes.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

The fact that NO is/was 67% black does mean something though.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Goo dfor him what I don't understand is why he seems to be standing alone saying this, why is noone else standing up and saying how ridiculous this imbalance is.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black peo

Because they're too scared that people will stop buying their records/watching their films etc. I have a whole new respect for Kanye West after this (I still think Diamonds From Sierra Leone was shit, though).

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

i think its crazy that people black or white are being shot at for taking food. what are they supposed to do, they see a supermarket - leave the change on the counter.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black peo

Exactly! If you're starving in the middle of a crisis and you find food, food that is probably too damaged to have been sold anyway (and to who? These people have no money, they HAVE NOTHING), then fucking take it. Who else is going to use it before it goes bad or is washed away? And if you can't find any, eat a government sniper.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

haven't seen the footage yet, but i too have a new found respect for kanye. it's classic how, in the article, they try to defend themselves by saying 'the crew were "instructed to listen for a curse word"'. it's like, 'he's black - he's gonna f_cking swear!'

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

I believe the censors were instructed to listen for curse words throughout the whole show.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

it sounds horrible, but i actually laughed after watching that video. but its because im so happy that somebody actually had the stones to get up in front of national TV and say what everyone was thinking. makes a change from all the PC, pro-government shite that theyre told they have to speak.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Damn straight, well done Mr West. *applaudes*

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Excellent stuff - regardless of what you may think of Kayne West's music you have to respect him for that.

Chris Tuckers face is priceless.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

here's to this tragedy ending Bush, and highlighting a few ugly truths about the worlds most hegemonic nation

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

He's a fucking idiot, and he talked the biggest load of bullshit, and it wasn't even delivered well, he was stuttering and shaking to fuck.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

heaven forbid emotion should permeate anyone's exterior and affect their delivery.

spanner.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

That makes me want to buy Kanye West records......it'd be nice if something changed for the better out of this tragedy, but I doubt it will. Notice how the news reports are already talking about fucking oil prices going up...

The most appalling shit can happen, but one thing will always remain constant- the amount of money yankee oil takes home each day....

Sure, Bush may lose popularity over this, but let's face it, america hasn't got the best history of efficient action in the face of adversity. They like to blow things up and create a fuss. So Bush'll be out bu, it's not like there are only twenty more evil, murdering, racist oil barons sons to replace him.....there are probably twenty thousand...we're doomed.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Carzy: great eloquence.
grockle: please do buy his records, they're quite splendid.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

...as outstanding a musician and also as black as Vanilla Ice.

Fo'shizzle

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

the point is it doesnt matter what bush does now, because he's already been given a second term of office, and legally can't have a third. americans fucked up by putting him back in and they've got another 3 years whether they like it or not.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Unless someone really doesn't like it. Been forty-odd years since they assassinated a President. Someone's gotta restart that 20-year pattern sometime.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

he wouldnt have an album comng out by any chance would he????

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black peo

Did you bother to watch the clip before posting that? If it was a stunt to boost interest in his record it was a pretty phenomenal performance. He looked really nervous and sounded quite incoherent (which, to the arsehole who criticises him for that above, is not a problem in the slightest. Do you want everything to be bland and emotionless, even protest? Well, hope that live TV ends and people stop caring about things outside their own little world. I, for one, was touched by his sincerity and timidity). If anything it might hit his record sales. I think he was pretty brave for speaking out like that, it takes a little courage to stand up for something when you know the people around you will not support you. The timing was not inappropriate. If he has waited until the aftermath - who would be listening. Fuck television studio and polite people and their idea of etiquette.

Something of flawed importance happened. Shame you have to be a celebrity for your words to be listened to (even then they cover them pretty quickly)

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Mike Myers's face in that video is a picture. I wanted him to say "yeah baby yeah!" when West said "Bush hates black people" but alas he didn't.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Katrina had no idea she was tearing through the lives of black people and white people alike. She did it because she was a hurricane, and that's what hurricanes do.

Kanye West's not what is important here. I don't think you guys have any idea what has happened to NO. I don't think I do. The city is gone, my friends. It's a ghost town. Think about that. A whole fucking city gone. :-(

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

He doesnt care about black people he cares about the OIL dammit!

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Kanye West was shaking and stuttering because he was genuinely raged at the way Bush handled this.

If ANYTHING bad happened in Texas, he wouldn't wait for a request for help from the State of Texas. He'd go. People are dying. He wouldn't wait for Texas to ask for help. Would he mind "cutting his vacation short" to go help Texas, or any of the mega-big, high profile States?

Did Bush wait for Iraq to ask the US to "help"?? Did the US wait for NYC on 09/11?? No, Bush gave a nationally televised statement in hours. Did they wait for more people in Asia to die after the Tsunami? His excuses for not doing anything are so transparent.

If he was murdered, or died suddenly, in the next 24 hours, I wouldn't shed a tear. I would probably be a little happy. Smiles all around.

When the truth is self-evident there is no need for eloquence...

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Kanye West may have been prompted by the controversy discussed in the NYTimes article linked to above, where two pictures of survivors wading through the streets with bags of food were descrived rather differently:

(taken from the NYTimes article:)
"The first photo, taken by Dave Martin, an Associated Press photographer in New Orleans, shows a young black man wading through water that has risen to his chest. He is clutching a case of soda and pulling a floating bag. The caption provided by The A.P. says he has just been "looting a grocery store...
...The second photo, also from New Orleans, was taken by Chris Graythen for Getty Images and distributed by Agence France-Presse. It shows a white couple up to their chests in the same murky water. The woman is holding some bags of food. This caption says they are shown "after finding bread and soda from a local grocery store."

It is definitely stuff to make your blood boil. The whole area is f**ked off back into the third world and people are (even if only subliminally) filtering the desperate survivors with shitty stereotyping. Racism + severe shoot to kill policy.... entirely right and proper to make KW's point. It will be much more likely to damage him within an entertainment and radio industry dominated by Bush's mates than help him.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

It's still going on. Radio4 were interviewing the people who had been let back in to get stuff and do repairs for a few hours. guess what?! in a city that is predominantly black all these people were white.

As for Carzy - on other sites that's called being a WUM.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black peo

good for kanye west, they should've let him finish. i didn't get to see it...is there some way i can?

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

Relating to someone's post further up, I just heard on the news that a hurricane striking New Orleans is one of three most likely disasters to happen in the US. The other 2 being an earthquake in California and a terrorist attack in New York. Spooky eh?

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

They built a city below sea level, right next to the sea, in an area of the country that is frequently hit by hurricanes.

This really should have been prevented, and George Bush does seem to be the one at fault.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black peo

And why is Bush to blaim for the city being built there?

To me West comes across as poorly advised and poorly prepared. He naively hi-jacked a platform granted to him for fund-raising and in doing so may have alienated some of those prepared to help. Did nobody coach him thorugh this? Nobody wanted his opinion/world view - you can download that for 79p a time.

Secondly he rants almost incoherently barely able to form a sentence. When making a point like that (however valid) you need to be clear and focused to have impact. Is it the press, the relief agencies, the war in Iraq, US society, the President or all the above he is complaining about. When his opportunity came, he was found wanting. Now Rev Jesse Jackson....there's a different story.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

yes but it seems silly to hold a fundraiser for a disaster and then have no one discuss the main reasons for that disaster. it's not an " opinion/world view", it's facts on the ground.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black peo

The fact of the matter is that Kanye West said things that needed to be said and things that too many people were too scared to say, if it had to be on a fundraising programme that everyone would watch then so be it.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black peo

"To me West comes across as poorly advised and poorly prepared"

Yup, that's a good thing- he said what he thought, which is kinda rare on telly these days....

Personally I hold more value in someones opinion if I believe they are genuine, rather than saying something 'cos they feel they ought to say it, or 'cos it'll make them popular. Whatever Jesse Jackson says, and however right it is, it's entangled with so much showbiz spiel it has less value than a spontaneous, emotional outburst in my opinion.

Re: Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black peo

Agreed on the emotional content above TV-gloss, but my point was he barely made any sense and it would have been far more powerful if he'd been able to string a sentence together. I still don't know who he was railing against it seems like the whole world.

To relegate Jesse Jackson to 'showbiz' is to do a great disservice to a man who is one of the key lieutenants of the civil rights movement in the US.

Kanye West: "Bush doesn't care about black people"

So, why exactly is Bush racist? What has he done to show that he is racist? I know he has appointed more blacks to top cabinet spots then any other president - but I'm sure that's part of his "cover".
So I guess this is what happened - the hurricane hits, and then Bush sends out the order to all parts of the federal government saying - "take your time, it's just black people". Is that how it went?
Does anyone have any idea how big the US government is? Do you think that that one man is controlling everything that is happening at all times?
Plus the comparisons to 9/11 make no sense. Firstly, the federal government did nothing to deal with 9/11 (related to the search and rescue and cleanup) - it was all local. So much for the quick response because they were "successful white bankers". Secondly, do you realize the size of the affected area (from the hurricane) - it was about the size of England. Those hundreds of thousands of people aren't going to be rescued immediately. This was the WORST disaster is US history. The real failure was the pre-planning and pre-activity - and the state has it's own reserve troops .
Of course it's easy to get swept up in the Bush is evil/stupid/racist/lier/etc orgy (without having to actually think about it).
