Grandaddy have finished work on their forthcoming album, Just Like The Family Cat, reports Billboard. Singer Jason Lytle has said that the new release marks a step away from the band's previous work:
"It's really big and luscious and gooey," he told Billboard. "It's an extreme of everything. The immersion that each song required was insane; it was very time consuming, but it's done this week."
Just Like The Family Cat has taken a year and a half to realise and follows the impending release (September 27th) of an EP, The Excerpts From the Diary of Todd Zilla EP.
"The [songs on the new album] are about the thoughtlessness and mindlessness of sprawl," Lytle continued.
As yet the band have announced no tour dates to accompany either release.

What a pleasant surprise! I had nearly forgotten about grandaddy. Looking forward to these albums, was worried "sumday" was going to be their last.-

Brilliant; bring it on!-
Re: Grandaddy finish with the Family Cat
I think the EP is a bit weak. Some really awful lyrics in there and it lacks the catchy melodies of old. Hope the new long player is a welcome return to form.-

Lies! "Pull the Curtains" is ace indie-pop...and the 2nd track has a frikking amazing key-change...+ nice use of cheesy 80s synth sounds. Which is a good thing. "Fuck the Valley Fudge" is pretty good as well. Reckon it bodes well for the new LP-

I haven't listened to the Sophtware Slump in ages. That album is perfecto.

That headline leads me to believe that all the new songs will sound like 'Steamroller' and 'Airplane Gardens'.
Will this be true?-

The new EP was a real dissapointment, i thought Sumday was the best they've done.
The EP sounds like demo's by Jason on his own, and its all the same as old stuff with no quality control.
Still looking forward to the album though, they'll pull it out the bag.
