Artists: Coldplay
Coldplay chief Chris Martin has told The Daily Star that he's got a country album just waiting to get out of him.

"Country is a very sleeping beast within us," said the singer. "We have two things we're not allowed to do - country and rap - just because of where we're from. So I think they'll rear their heads at some point in the future."

Rap? Straight up: Martin continued by saying, "I think the only future for music is if you bring together the most disparate worlds. That would be an album between Garth Brooks, Coldplay and Kanye West and produced by Timbaland."

Reckon he bought the Judgement Night soundtrack as a nipper?

I think this ends all music debate. Let's be honest, Coldplay brings together the best of music everywhere. If there's anybody who should lead this brave new world, it's Chris Martin. All hail King Yellow.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go countr

quite frankly chris martin is aspiring to be Bono....
never will happen....
Coldplays new album is nothing more than mediocre Tosh, quite frankly i'd like to see chris martin write 'Pop' or something that resembles musical variation

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

I don't mind Coldplay at all, but they're a really good example of how fame can mess up your head if you're not up to dealing with it...

Fuck off and leave country and rap alone Martin. Haven't you wrought enough wrongness on the world of music already? Keane? Snow Patrol? Feeder? These are war crimes.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

How did Coldplay spawn Feeder, when the latter came first?

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

..and Snow Patrol, they were around for years before Coldplay even formed.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Yeah, but they did reinvent themselves as a tenth rate coldplay tribute band (who in turn are a tenth rate U2 tribute band). Also, you missed out Athlete.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

If we're being specific, it's Oasis' fault for inventing Noelrock, which popularised weepy anodyne singalongs, which begat Dadrock. So we should burn them instead.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

I like that - rock begat modrock which begat Noelrock which went on to begat Dadrock.

And the burning, yes that is good as well.

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go countr

Does that mean CM will be singing live Steven Adams?

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Hmmm.

Three words.

"Rattle and Hum"

One more....

Cunt

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Woo… Judgement Night soundtrack, that ruled that did

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Onyx and Biohazard. Fucking genius.

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

i think this could be a biiiig mistake for everyone...
coldplay, the label... and anyone who wud listen to it...

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Hmm, "electro" album claims = 3 month delay and
a track that ripped off a kraftwerk riff,
wow c-u-t-t-i-n-g edge boys!!!

Obviously what martin means here is they are going to steal a garth brooks chorus and take 11 years to record.

They do bland MOR very well, I find them hummable but ultimately throwaway due to any real lack of exitement, why cant they just be honest about it and stop pretending they are capable or even ALLOWED to do anything else.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go co

they didn't rip kraftwerk off, they sampled them. if people weren't allowed to do that, think of all the drum'n'bass, hip hop, dance stuff, etc. that wouldn't be made.

i personaly would be very interested to hear what a country coldplay album would sound like. it might be crap, but it might be good, who can say until it's made?

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Daily Star, tongue, cheek?

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

What an uncharasmatic, boring, annoying twat. PS Coldplay could quite possibly be the most unoriginal band ever, but I've found out why they are important. Everytime they are on the radio or tv, I turn it off. If Coldplay was on more, the tv would be on even less, so in reality, I am saving electricity. See. There is a use for them.

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

plus, "a very sleeping beast" doesn't make grammatical sense.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

That's because it's poetry ( for Chris Martin anyway... )

I am really curious to hear him sing a country song !

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go countr

It sounds like one of the following to me

a) shock factor for it's own sake - of course country and rap would be ok for you to do - making it sound rebellious is ridculous and really showing off their middle class roots.
b) a Coldplay realisation that their turgid, boring, trite music might continue to sell, but that they will get fucking bored of continuing to make bland indie schmindie for the rest of their careers
c) Consequently they are scrambling around for ideas - what can we do so we don't get bored? Pick a genre from a hat? Country comes out first, then next rap. Sorted.

A final thought: that comment he makes about the ultimate album and 'bringing music together' sounds so wet it is untrue. Don't bring your liberal politics into questions of making music. Keep it to the lyrics *snigger* and your hands. I can't think of anything more boring than trying to create some kind of homogenous whole out of all the varied artists and styles out there. It does sound universalising and power crazy. Then again, it sounds just like the comments they made about re-inventing the wheel prior to their last album. And that turned out to be true, didn't it?

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go countr

Look at it this way. It can't be worse than the stuff they normally do. I'd like to see a more experimental Coldplay, if only because it would make them slightly interesting.

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

they should cover some Extreme Noise Terror in the style of Mika Bomb - then I would respect them. a bit

"Rap? Straight up: Martin continued by saying, "I think the only future for music is if you bring together the most disparate worlds. That would be an album between Garth Brooks, Coldplay and Kanye West and produced by Timbaland."

I do beleive he is taking the piss. Not that I care, he knows the reaction he'd get (he'd only have to look here) and why not? When you've made money and sold loads of albums why not piss on and laugh at the people who dislike you.

I would.

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

He just sounds arrogant. It'd be fine if Coldplay had actually displayed any inclination towards redefining themselves and experimenting, as Martin seems to be implying, but they haven't. None whatsoever. The next album will be the same as the rest: Watered down radio-friendly Indie. And multiple variations on the same guitar riff, again, and again, and again...

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

He was only joking. Anyone who 'knows' him will realize Chris always make off the cuff, random remarks. Maybe he's amusing himself, but whatever, they're not really making a country album.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go co

Wow, that Chris Martin is one crazy cat (maybe I should have used 'k's here?). The ever used excuse by those making mildly controversial comments - 'i was only joking'. Snoredom.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go co

Silencer? Wish I could silence you, you're talking out yer arse.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go co

You been in Chris Martins comedy class or something?

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Anyone who thinks all Coldplay's albums are the same obviously isn't listening. If you think Parachutes is in any way similar to X&Y, you're wrong. Either way, this is just another of Chris' ironic, self-deprecating remarks. If you've seen them live, you'd understand. He says stuff like that all the time and the crowd laughs and its cool. Everyone calm down, its only the fucking Daily Star anyway

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

The last two have been very, very similar, and they're not a million miles away from the first either. I'd like to believe that they need to change direction if they wish to retain their appeal, I'd like to believe that there's only so far you can go making the same music, but bands like Oasis and Coldplay are testament to the contrary.

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

I cannot believe you people are taking this story seriously when it is so obviously a fake / joke (it's sourced from the Daily Star!).

And yet, I knew I'd read on to find you'd all ignored that fairly obvious fact in the face of another chance to slate Coldplay. Because, let's face it, that's what "real" music fandom is all about.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Obviously our comments are pending the truth of the article, but what are we supposed to do? Respond to the story as if it's definitely fake? 'Oh that Chris Martin would sure be an idiot if what he said was true and had actually been said by him.' At the end of the day we don't know, so for the purpose of commenting it has to be assumed that the article is true.

Re: Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

That's not my point. The DiS clientele are by and large an intelligent bunch who should be able to (and, let's face it, probably did) spot that this story was fake from a mile off. Such people would usually be quick to point that out, but because it provides a convenient opportunity to slate Mr Martin, everyone is willfully ignoring it.

Which is pathetic.

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

There is more than country and rap that Crapplay cant do.
They cant do:
math rock
electronica
drum and bass
metal
jazz
folk
synth pop
emo
prog rock
innovative music

Martin's losing his marbles: Coldplay to go country?

Let's face it. If you or I were to become whiny, miserable pricks and then proceed to make whiny miserable music out of key and charged someone £15 to listen to it would we be successfull? Hell No, so why are those wankers given shed loads of cash for being miserable? And he's knobbing Gweneth Paltrow so how miserable can a whiny twat really be???
