Tickets are £8 in advance and available available from Ticketline.co.uk

KOMAKINO
They are the band for 2006. Even Johnny Borrell agrees as do the folks at the NME what with calling them “brit-rocks best new band”. This summer their pop laced with spaceship fuel had crowds dancing across the land including blistering performances with Cooper Temple Clause and at Reading/Leeds and Wireless. Their debut single ‘Say Something’ on Drowned in Sound Recordings came sealed air-tight in meat wrapping, complete with Polaroid’s individually taken by the band, sold out in 48hours and copies are going on eBay for as much as forty quid!

FEAR OF MUSIC
Sounding like a mix between Muse, Pixies and King Adora, Fear of Music are four Manchester teenagers who have been causing a stir with the public and industry over the last year. Gaining massive support from Steve Lamacq and XFM alike, there are many more killer hooks and sweaty gigs to come...

EMMY THE GREAT
Is already a legend in her own right. She writes sweet'n'wee-soured folk ditties with hints of Adam Green and the shambles of Cat Power. She's a very special and very sweet luminary in waiting who will charm you to the floor, only to flutter her eyelids and restore your faith in all that is beautiful.

R E D J E T S O N
DrownedinSound Recordings' stargazers debut album ‘New General Catalogue’ slid out earlier this year. Things are currently hotting up with two nights supporting Bloc Party at Brixton Academy, a tour with Pure Reason Revolution and their first full single ‘This, Every Day, For The Rest of Your Life’ released on October 31st 2005, featuring remixes from Hope of the States’ Ant Theaker and a video directed by Paul Gore whose made amongst other things Snow Patrol's ‘Run’ promo.
Here are some of the lovely things people have said about Redjetson:
“Redjetson are one of my favourite bands at the moment. Dramatic, intense and exciting…” - Kele Okereke, BLOC PARTY
“…Redjetson are a massive force to be reckoned with - theirs is a sound built on searing guitars, soaring vocals and cathartic rhythms, all played with ear shattering, heart breaking volume and pathos…this is a masterpiece of invention and interest.” - NME
“Breathtakingly beautiful…find out why loud is the new loud. Brilliant.” - THE FLY

FIELD MUSIC
Field Music, brothers David and Peter Brewis with friend Andrew Moore, have attained semi-legendary status in their native North East having set up the mysterious Studio 8 where Maximo Park and The Futureheads recorded their first tracks. Field Music's sound is somewhat more refined than either of their neighbours' - its a Left Banke-esque mixture of symphonic and pop sensibilities, coming on like Sparks and Van Dyke Parks doing Beatles covers.
"The most charming act to emerge this year" The Observer
"Field Music's Debut is a genius, folk-psychedelic shangbang" 8/10 NME
www.fieldmusic.co.uk

THE WHIP
"Comprising ex-members of underrated Manchester electronic act Nylon Pylon, who were signed to London Records and supported The Music on a UK tour in Feb 2002 at their peak, The Whip are a more reflective band with incalculable potential. Bridging the gap between LCD Soundsystem/The Departure and their Depeche Mode/Gang of Four influences.... Let's hope this band are here to stay." High Voltage Magazine
www.thewhip.net

THE AUTOMATIC
Recently signed to B-Unqiue, this Welsh quartet take in influences as far ranging The Cooper Temple Clause, Blur, Jarcrew, Radiohead, Queen, Interpol, At The Drive In.... debut single out later this year! www.theautomatic.co.uk

LES INCOMPETENTS
Imagine a party band that lurks somewhere between Art Brut, Beefheart and Blood Brothers. Add to that a live show featuring umbrellas, cowbells, feathers and antlers and you're left with the most fun band in London.
Their double-A debut single 'Reunion' / 'Much Too Much', wrapped in string'n'brown paper, on White Heat Records, sold out pretty much instantly and picked up fresh meat plays on Zane Lowe's Radio 1 show and their video was all over Mtv2's 120 Minutes. They've tipped by many as one of the bands of 2006. Come catch their ramshackle riot show!
"Les Incompétents jump around as though they're auditioning for a circus act. They deserve an A+ for energy... give them a variety show!" - NME
"Live music has never been so fun, theatrical, and good-looking. Les Incompétents are the future." - Artrocker

NEPHEW
Manchester's Nephew are reminiscent of those dramatic moments when you're listening to The Dears or the peak of Hope of the States' mountainous climbs. Teetering on the edge of something theatrically immense, Nephew are an exciting prospect to hold – if only to suck in the promise of what could be.

FOLDED REMEDIEZ A beat-boxing duo who can only be described as Manchester's answer to Rahzel. Known to almost bring the house down at most indie shows they've played (including supporting Doves at Apollo) they deliver inspired covers of both the Eastenders and Casualty theme tunes, among others. Expect something special at ITC!

ACTION PLAN
Having plied their wares around London for a good year or so now, Action Plan have built an enviable live reputation, with powerful performances with bands including Razorlight. The band release their debut single 'Stendhal' this October on the ace Young & Lost Club label.
www.actionplantheband.co.uk

THE MADELINES
London based 4-piece The Madeleines fall somewhere between Death Cab for Cutie, Television and The Cure, but bring an original spin that's helped to create three minute indie pop pieces of heaven, such as live favourites 'Trouble' and 'Rosalia'. With their first single out in November on Destructible, some radio play and a host of followers behind them, they're definitely one to watch for the new year.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

There's more to come...

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

Better be ;)

I actually have no issue with travelling, and I've never been to Manchester, but alas it's too soon for me to get time off work. Shaaaaaaaaaaaame.

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

I live in Afleck's Palace*

*lie

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

You can get home on a Sunday around Manchester - the further out you live - less the chance of getting home.

Diver why were you not at on the verge on saturday. That was disappointing.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

What happened at the Verge on Sunday?
(I could not have gone anyway...)

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City

Looks good apart from the automatic who are shit...

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City

That picture looks liek the child of Tim Wheeler and that Charleen Spitoon bird from Texas (the band)!

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City

I thought it looked a bit like your man from Terrorvision.

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

I have a ticket for this, but I'm not sure if I'm going yet. There's only really Redjetson on there that I'm bothered about, and I'm not exactly a BIG fan of their's.

Sell it to me.

As its a birthday party, will there be cake and jelly and ice cream and balloons and silly hats?

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

There will be crablin.

Need I say more?

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

Manchester? Don't the organisers realise that music fans also live in London?

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

Yes, that's why we put gigs on in London sometimes three times a month. That's why we all live in London. That's why we're doing more in London during October.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

I'm having a party at my house to celebrate.
With jelly and party games.
But YOU can't come.
Yes, YOU.
And you know why.
Naughty you.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

dont you realise the 'in the city festival' is in manchestr and not london. stupid question!

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

It was a joke.

Have you not seen every thread where a band announces a solitary london gig? It gets about three posts saying 'do they not realise their are metal/folk/disco/party folk (delete as appropriate) fans in the north east/manchester/outer hebrides?'. I was lampooning this common occurence.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

it's only cos london got closed down or something

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

I didn't realise there was anywhere north of London until I started reading DiS.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

For fucks sake- Like EVERYTHING decent on the music scene doesnt happen in London anyway! Alright, the rest of the country KNOWS London is the fucking capital, you get enough as it is-dont get pissy when something good happens up North. Wanker!

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

Tickets are sold out for this, right?

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

I didn't bother going in the end. There's only really Redjetson that are worth seeing on that lineup, and they're not that good.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

Have you've seen EVERY band on the lineup and can therefore state this with confidence? I'm not sure if the redjetson comment was a compliment or a slagging... or both!

You are quite miserable aren't you. It's a shame, you might have enjoyed yourself last night... but not worth the risk is it?

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

:D To be honest, I probably would have gone if I could have been bothered.

I do quite like Redjetson, but I presumed they'd only get half an hour or so. As I say, the rest of the bands didn't look particularly exciting (Komakino-tverygood for instance) so I feel I made the right decision. I wouldn't have been able to get ther until about six, so I'd have missed all the bands I've never heard of anyway.

I saved myself some money and I can go and see 65daysofstatic in Shrewsbury tomorrow night.

YAY.

(That's if the gig's still on)

Review of Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party

You guys are slow.

There's a review of this rather enjoyable all-dayer on The Indie Credential.

http://www.indiecredential.com

Re: Review of Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party

i presume 'rather enjoyable' is being sarcastic, due to the fact you have slagged off pretty much every band on the bill.

Re: Review of Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party

Hmmm, I've just re-read the review, written by my partner in crime JustHipper, and she slags off exactly 3 of the 11 bands on the bill. Which is nowhere near "pretty much every".

Re: Review of Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party

Good review man!
You didnt miss much with the Automatic, trust me;)

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City

MADELINES: They are a pretty straightforward indie rock three piece who have some good tunes, but weren’t particularly original.

ACTION PLAN: It just didn’t excite me. The lead singer looked like a fat, scruffy version of Gaz Coombs as well.

LES INC: The annoying half of the singing twosome kept jumping off the stage, dragging loads of weird crap from under the tables into the crowd, including a vacuum cleaner, as the crowd backed further and further away. It was kind of funny. But in a sad, attention-seeking way.

FIELD MUSIC: They were not very exciting live

KOMAKINO: Unfortunately, I think I must have been delusional because all Komakino reminded me of this time was failed Manchester scenesters Marion. And they weren’t even as good. Musically they were pretty uninspirational, just conjuring up the rockier side of the dregs of Britpop.

Hardly the most positive review is it? I'm guessing two things. Number 1 is that your reviewer is a pretty crap writer (honestly, if the only thing you can say about a band is that their singer is fat and looks like Gaz from Supergrass is it really worth saying?)
Number 2 is that he's not in a band of his own.

Please tell me I'm wrong. I suspect I'm not.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City

I saw your Apocalypse film last night.
It was mostly shit.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

Mostly, other than the bits I'm in, you mean?

It's these amateurs I work with......

...

Please, people, I would prefer a 'portly' Gaz Coombes. Like Josh Homme, he's portly. And he's a ginger.

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City 2005

Hahaha. Josh Homme is also 85ft tall and you wouldn't want him to look at you funny or you might pass out. That's why they call him 'portly'. Gaz Coombes himself is portly though? I don't even think there was any resemblance... That's what drinking at 2 in the afternoon does to reviewers though.

I liked Action Plan, I thought they were pretty cool. Besides that I pretty much agree with all the rest of the review, although I think the plan to "turn up after the first few bands" from a reviewer is fairly ill concieved.

Les Inc were odd. I'm sure the show would work with people who liked them already/to impressionable londoners, but in manchester, it just resulted in everyone edging back to the back of the room and rolling their eyes. I don't think it's one for the provinces.... Also, The Madeleines shot themselves in the foot when they announced that "London was taking over". Don't people from the Home Counties realise that that's not exactly a popular statement up t'north?

Gaz Coombes himself is portly though? and already a scruffy bastard!! That's quite the insult really, a "scruffy gaz coombes". It's like calling someone a shit James Blunt. I don't even think there was any resemblance... That's what drinking at 2 in the afternoon does to reviewers though.

Re: Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the

i thought they said summat like "London has taken over the bill today".
but it was early and i was hungover so maybe they didn't.

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City

pfft these London bands who play up north eh? What on earth do they think they're doing?

The cheek..............

Drowned in Sound 5th Birthday Party at In the City

they're welcome to play, just - you know - never think you're taking over the north!! Anyway, all these "london" bands are never from london, they're from uxbridge and st albans, or hemel hempstead... they should be bigging up the home counties, then we'd feel for them.
