From Holy Moly:
' Which band's recent number one single had its lyrics written entirely by the drummer but they had to agree to a 'co-write' with the singer even though said vocalist added nothing, not even a comma, to the words?
The singer, believing himself to be the only 'star' in the band, refused to admit that their biggest (and by far their best) single could have come into being without his firm hand on the controls.
Management at first reasonably backed the drummer, pointing out that he had written the bloody thing and that the song was sure to be a huge hit for the band. The singer's mature response was to refuse to record his vocals until his demands were met, and in addition he would take his ball home whilst holding his breath.
Because of this wrangle, it was the last song on the album to be recorded and delayed the release date. Vocals were only performed when the drummer was forced to give in to the singer's demands that it be credited to both of them.
The label agreed in the end as they appreciated how successful the song (particularly if it had vocals) would be, especially in America.'
I've met Johnny Borrell, he really is a twat.
I've heard countless stories like this
there's some guy living off the royalites for writing one of the Eagles biggest songs (forget which one) and letting them pretend it was their own song for a big wedge.
My Dad has a friend of a friend story about someone who wrote a song which Van Morrison used on an album which ended up with the "co-written by..." tag.
Not the
only place I've heard this story...
yeh
the van morrison thing is well known amongst his bigger fans, he's a well known cockface, but can be forgiven for his majestic early to mid run of albums.
unbelievable.
and yet perfectly believable
I don't believe this for a second
Who the fuck would want to claim "America" as their own if they hadn't written it?
to make money?
Borrell's not going to get songwriting royalties for it though
just because it says in the liner notes that he wrote it, is he? Surely not.
i can't believe i figured that out
as soon as you mentioned the singer being arrogant enough to demand co-credit.
what an obnoxious cunt (borrell, not the drummer. he seems alright)
andy burrows
Is a very nice guy, as are the rest of the band. i can only assume Borell is only pretending to be a twat in public, otherwise they would've dumped him ages ago...
if i wrote that song
I'd be happy for someone else to take the credit, regardless of money. This would mainly be because i'd have already killed myself.
Greedy bastard!
I only got s tenner of Yorke when | penned Fake Plastic Trees for him, during his creative lull.
i actually guessed kaiser chiefs because the drummer writes the songs
but then they're quite open about that i guess.
also the line 'and in addition he would take his ball home' is lol
What song?
"America"?...lets be honest, the lyrics hardly demand any creative ability...
this was on popbitch
they didnt have the stupidity to suggest that America was razorelight's best single tho.
