what are your slightly odd obsessions?

i was just thinking about how everyone has a few tings that they've always loved and kinda obsess over. i don't mean to the detriment of their whole life or anything, just the areas in which you know nearly everything and are always interested when something new occurs.

i don't think we can count music in this one.

mine are:
trains
apple computer corp. / tech in general
the simpsons

  • music

    • (it's all i got) :(

      • (and I definitely don't know everything there is to know about it)

        • (I really wish I could delete posts)

        • there must be an area you excel in though?

          my areas of musical expertise/obsessiveness:

          old skool hip-hop (1984-89)
          early british progressive rock (1968-73)
          new bands

          • not really

virtually nothing before year 2000. There's too much.

      • Oh gosh

        • um.

          genetics&bioethics
monkey island (I, II and III)
calculus (that's rather vague, I know. I could spend HOURS differentiating&integrating stuff and not get bored though :( )

          </rubbish>

          • ..

Integration gets boring pretty quickly when you realise that you generally can't do it analytically.

            • Oooh...

              Football (in particular non-league football)

Cycling (in particular professional road race cycling)

              Family Guy

Civil Liberties/Liberalism (general interest in political philosophy)

Modern Chinese and Japanese history (from 1800 onwards - absolutely fascinating stuff)

      Thats it really.

    • i can honestly say you've never wound me up

i honestly can't be wound up by someone i consider to be a worthless organism.

if someone like bamos, brainers or y'know, THE CLASSICS were to try and wind me up, they'd succeed because i respect them.

you're like an unwitting clown whose dastardly schemes keep failing and you think no one notices.

    • pedants?

  • Hey Crablin!

I have this in my back garden: www.narrow-gauge.co.uk/gallery/244

    Obsessions:
    Scotch
Having a little Polo player on all my clothes
    Wittgenstein
    Game theory
    Sub-saharan politics

    • is that honestly in your

      back garden?

      • I love trains.

        Really.

I'm gonna get a huge tattoo of a stream train on my back. It's gonna be bursting through a collection of steam and fog. It's Ace.

        </if only>

        • i'm currently toying with the idea of heading to clapham

and going trainspotting today. i've not done it in aaaages.

          • I've never been trainspotting.

            Don't believe I ever will.

The only train in Stockton is battered old GNER.

Stockton is shit. Especially considering it's the site of THE FIRST RAILWAY.

            • You forgot about the Arriva trains

The GNER ones are actually quite new.

              • Fair enough.

                They're still shit trains though

                :p

                • You're a bit wrong there like

The Arriva trains look like they are going to fall off the track if they go too fast.

The GNER trains are quite nice actually.

I'm trumping you on this as I use them more than you :-p

                  • Yeah but

                    you're a bender.

                    • And you're a twat

but I wasn't going to bring that into this argument :-p

      • It's in one of them

It's really my step-dad's, who is the most transport obsessed person ever (chairman of chiltern rail&ATOC). Owns about 15 vintage cars + there's a 1920's buffet car I'm having my 18th in. Pretty much fucking ridiculous.

  • final fantasy games

i used to be into guitars and pedals in a big way, but then indie music persuaded me guitars were gay so i got a microkorg and called my self "electronic". Still appreciate a good telecaster sound though.

Also finding stickers and putting them on my guitar. I dunno why. I have one that says "nessie's the name, elusivness is the game" on it.

Also, im obsessed with being a hipocrite. I always seek out occasions to contradict myself.

we used to affectionately call it 'the ghetto'..

      • thankfully i never did

i just live amongst many of them and have had friends and relatives in some horrible ones in southampton. i've always had a fear/fascination with them, and thus my Masters was on their represenation in british & euro literature/film/music

        • It was actually not too bad

I had doors held open for me n stuff... by the ghetto kids. It was a temporary living arrangement... my friend bought the place knowing it would be gutted and bulldozed and she would make market value out of it at the time so it was a very shrewd investment.
Very good party houses... we had lots of ghetto parties there with lots of very loud music.
          They were the dayz.

(and also, you forget I am from Melbourne, so like, watching that programe makes me cringe a little... I have an overwhelming fear of suburbia which is why I ran away to London as soon as possible, although not all of Melbourne is like Neighbours - just the far outskirts - he he)...
