i'm about to take the leap and buy a new distortion pedal, retiring my trusty BOSS HM-2 but i don't know what to get. it has to be pretty versatile and i have a budget of 60-80 pounds. thought about another BOSS or maybe a RAT. anybody got suggestions?

The RAT right

it's ace for fuzz and crunchy stuff, but if you want to do palm muting on the heaviest distortion setting it sounds quite muddy without the amp or another pedal overdriving. Just saying. So for chugga chugga metal you might want to try something else. Or RAT + overdrive.

the boss range

whilst cheap, rarely falter.

only pedal

you will EVER need is the boss ds-1.
it is a gift from god,

I've got as DS-2...

pretty tasty. Shredmasters are always good....as are RATS

i have a MT2

(Metal zone) it's a bit too much unless you are after something very heavey, but i guess thats why i bought it, and it's good at why i bought it

Hot Cake

it's slightly outta yer range pricewise, but try ebay. highly recommended and widely used, just not much known about them o'er 'ere.

if you like to mix it up a bit

I heartily recommend the Digitech Distortion Factory, which does a sterling job of imitating seven of the best distortion pedals out there. Or a Digitech Hot Rod which is less precise but has a morph knob where you can fuck about with the sound. Awesome.

I have the Distortion Factory, and currently use it on the tubescreamer setting, though I'm getting the Hot Rod soon so I'll have more options.

my favourite distortions are

RAT, Big Muff, BOSS MT-2 and a good old marshall footswitch

thankyou...

...all for the suggestions and opinions. when i take the plunge, if i can be arsed, i'll let you all know!

Is the Hot-Rod the X-Series one?

If so, I agree with you 100%. I have a Turbo RAT but if that ever dies I'm going straight for the X-Series thanks to its versitilty and either of those two would be good.

get a marshall shredmaster off ebay

theyre discontinued.

You wont regret it.

the boss bass overdrive

is my secret weapon, makes my wee twangy telecaster ballsy beyond belief :)

Rats of most varieties are awesome too, though if you crave sublime fuzziness then its a Big Muff or Double Muff for you

I say

ProCo Rat II
Visual Sound Jekyl & Hyde
Robert Keeley Modified Boss BD-2
Kelley Modded Rat is great too.

keely mod..

http://www.robertkeeley.co.uk/distort_ratii.htm

this is the keely modded rat as mentioned by ianj above.

its very sensitive (especially on the volume / distortion controls) but is very versatile with a 3 way selector. you get standard rat, clean rat (which is LOUD) and keely modified smooth rat.

get yer rat out !!
