My only beef is with the piss poor earphones they come with. And the bass is a little bit weak because there's no proper equaliser, just a bunch of presets. Oh, and the price. And the battery life.
I'm not selling this very well am I?
But seriously, they're great - any cons are outweighed by the superb interface, ease of transfer of mp3s, the looks and the software.
Yeah! The bass is shockingly weak! You really need to pick up a decent pair of earphones with them...even with the shitty non-existent bass, the white earphones you get with the iPod manage to crackle if you turn the volume up over half-way. And wearing the white earphones in public is a bit like saying 'please mug me, I'm carrying a £300 piece of technology'.
at last somone else who thinks the headphones are crap! they charge thirty quid for them separately too!
I love my ipod but i still think that in two years they'll be totally superseeded by the sony alternative (better battery life and multiformat) or even the mobile phone crossover thing. Might be best to wait.
I got the 20 gig Creative Zen Touch, and so far I've found it great. The ear phones aren't amazing, but they do the job. There appear to be no infamous ipod style battery issues, and it's so easy to use that even Ive found it relativly straightforward. The ipod gets so much coverage, that other players seem pretty unheard of......so make sure you do your research.
They're easy to use for technophobes, but other than that the technology of most of them is a few years out of date. You're really only paying to be part of a club of supercool people with white earphones.
For the same price of an ipod (and i believe them come with a charger, earphones and thats it), i got an H340 from Iriver which is 40gig, has a 32,000 color display for viewing photos, can transfer files from other mp3 players and cameras with nothing but a cable (provided), allows you to watch videos, has a built in radio which you can record direct to mp3, has an internal microphone (and they give you an external one too), allows you to view text files, gives you 16hours of playback on a 2 hour charge (MUCH better than ipod). It also comes with a charging base, extra battery pack to double the play time, a remote control, headphones, leather carry case, it does not need an intermediate program like itunes, can store normal files as it works as a hard drive. The only problem is that you need to be technically savvy to get the video working as you need to convert videos into a specific format. Other than that, Iriver is the one to go for. They upgrade their firmware at regular intervals (for instance at first the player did not play video at all, they only added that feature a few weeks ago) and also replace players at the drop of a hat, even if its your fault that its damaged.
I have just got a new phone that has a pretty snazzy MP 3 player - I haven't got th 512mb card yet but on one site it asid you can get between 5/10 hours MP3s on there...so I'll tell ya what that's like. MP3 players are the way to go tho.
I've heard Iriver are pretty poor with regards to firmware. One look at their forum will show you this. Every ipod clone i've looked into (see the reviews on Amazon) seem to have some issues that make me think twice about shelling out the cash. The new Zens look pretty good though so i might go for one of them.
Ipods definitely seem to be the poorest value for money as you are paying for the name as well as the product.
Re headphones. I use a Sharp MD MT-190 personal minidisc recorder. I replaced the innerear phones immediately with a set of Sennheiser PMX 60 headphones. Light and durable, and with an excellent sound quality.
I paid 130 for a creative zen xtra 40 GB from an american website. It is a bit bigger than others on the market but for memory size, sound quality, earphones and price it's def the best buy out there.
go for it! i bought mine at the same time as a powerbook in some deal where i got the 40gb iPod for £70 when i should have got it for £200. win. steer clear of all the supposed 'ipod killers' - sure the price is right but mostly they all look terrible (hey, im a graphic designer, im not carrying around something that looks like buck rogers' pager) and iPod has a huge collection of add-ons that are growing every day including stuff like FM transmitters, dictaphones, nice speaker systems.. with time they can only get more adventurous.
but yeah, ditch the earphones. they look twattish and you may as well wear a sandwich board saying 'I HAVE £200 OF ELECTRONICS IN MY POCKET, MUG ME NOW'.
ipods are brilliant.
battery life is fine - you will probably update it so much that charging kinda happens automatically - definitely get a cradle for it, makes things quicker. the headphones do crackle on bass-heavy recordings, but they are the best fitting earplugs i've ever had. and they look great.
i got a 40gb one with my mac, its got hundreds of albums on it now and its not even half full. your entire record collection in your pocket. amazing.
They might store 10,000 songs, but the vast majority of people don't have 800-1000 albums. They're too expensive, £299 for a over-glorified, trendy fashionista Walkman? Fuck right off mate. My Sony MP3 Walkman cost £80 2 years ago, works fine, long battery life, can store 200 songs on 1 CD. I might consider a new MP3 player in the future, but not until the price goes below £100.
By the way, if anyone knows a good MP3 player which is below £100, message me or summat.
about the lack of bass on ipods, it's because they all have a cap on the sound level so that apple consumers don't damage their hearing and sue them. However, you can get this nifty piece of software called GoPod which basically removes the cap, so you can go way way louder without having to buy new earphones! bonus.
hmmm. y'know, i used to have a superloud sony MD player and blast my ears out with it all the time and since getting the pod i haven't really missed the extra volume. which surprises me as i used to re-record i disc with more gain if i couldnt get it loud enough.
caviar n cigs - is it more cod roe and superkings? is it? is it??
Have recently done a fair bit of research on the subject having decided to take the plunge and get ine.
Didn't take me long to decide the iPod itself wasn't the way to go - hyper expensive, problematic batteries, easily scratched and those (apparently mega-poxy sounding) silly "mug-me" headphones.
The Creative Zen players are way, way better value and just about all the feedback I unearthed on them was very positive.
I guess, like everything else electronic these days, there's something better and cheaper round the corner. It's just a case of when you decide to invest in tomorrow's obsolesence but I really would give the Apple players a miss.
i pods can fuck off! i bought a cassette walkman for £6 last month (yippee)! thats cos im all retro and "kewl innit?" oh yeah im broke too (shit)
I like making compilations on tape it's more of a loving ritual occasion (!) you have to live through and come out the other side of hmmm define yourself with this lost boy and live with it.
Have to agree there was always something a bit more loving about putting a tape together than knocking up a CD. I think it was largely that you had to be a lot more careful about not sticking any duff tracks on there as it was a lot of hassle and battery life to wind pass something naff.
I suppose albums must be a pit of a pain for taping, these days. Maybe they should start making C70s.
I make compilation cds now instead of tapes, in exactly the same way as I made tapes. Once you get used to it there's no real difference apart from the missing ten minutes.
on a slightly seperate note, my itunes no longer lets me burn cds: it stops after the first couple of tracks and says unknown error 4450 occurred. anyone know what this means and/or how to fix it or get around it??

Re: Ipods
Get either the creative or iriver players.
I'm getting the Iriver one for Christmas. It's 20G and has a battery life of 16 hours
Re: Ipods
Re: Ipods
Thing is, it seems like you pay that amount and they always update the model a few months later.

The new Sony 20gb thing looks pretty good too but isn't it about £300?
I really like the itunes software, so easy to use. It's much better than the sonicstage stuff I used to use for my MD player.
