Popular with the skinny-jeaned London club Trash - I've been there twice, fo'real - is to close on its tenth birthday in January.
The club - run by Erol Alkan - will celebrate its final night on January 8. Organisers of the night, they say:
“As some of you may have heard already, our 10th birthday party on the 8th of January will be the last ever trash. Ever.
“Yes, that's right, trash will be closing its doors for good in the new year, having spanned a whole decade of dancing and debauchery.”
Alkan intends to set up another club night in the near future, which he says will "play the similar important role which Trash plays".

i dont go often
but its sad that it isnt just the default option anymore if youre unemployed enough to go out late on a monday.
but you can always go to white heat
on tuesday.
but tuesday =/= monday!
and trash had a substantially different playlist, and a good soundsystem.
prefer whiteheat
Silly Trash story
My glasses broke at Trash... my eyesight is particularly bad, I can't see anything without them.
Anyways I had to leave, but some twats saw me and decided I was blind. They followed me out, and rather than offering any help, they pointed and shouted "that guy's blind, huh huh.". So I threatened them with rape, and haven't been to London since :(
The music was ok, Erol is a rather good Dj.
dammit!
i love this club!
I got turned away from here...
so FUCK EM'!
-im not bitter-
Why were you turned away?
684
not dressed cool enough...
hahahhha
that's hilarious.
i went once. it was okay.
after all the hype it turned out to just be a dress-up indie disco with massively overpriced drinks.
i had fun though.
Bring back
The Zombie club...
when i went with LOLien
the guy on the door nearly didn't let me in... not because I wasn't cool enough, but because he claimed I'd blown drugs in his face and hit him for being gay at a house party once.
It was quite strange. But eventually Tom was able to convince him that I was not a voilent homophobe.
i went last monday
and the guys in front of me got turned away because there was a dress code, i asked if i was allowed in and he said yeh. i asked 'so whats the dress code?' and he replied ' just dont dress like a cunt'. which was a bit harsh.
^ i think that's a pretty amusing response :D
i've never been but i know that erol is a legend :D
what were you wearing?
i was wearing
a chocolate brown cordrouy jacket with matching trousers, a green check flanel shirt, dunlop green flashes and a saved by the bell baseball cap
the dress code, as far as i could work out
was basically dont wear a chavvy tracksuit and dont wear a straight suit like youve just come from work in the city. jeans and tshirt is always totally ok
that's pretty much how I figured it
Nope.. was bullshit
All I was rocking was Jeans, and like an old thift store shirt man. they were just being dicks.
i went once
and i think it was one of the most uncomfortable, pretentious clubs ive ever been to.
shame really cos i remember the music being pretty good.
,,
good.
Any club that claims to be about music but turns people away for what they look deserves to be closed down. Pretentious arse for posh art school students living off daddys money.
well
i might be wrong, but i think the original idea was to keep away ben sherman'd oasis/cast fans (remember, "indie" in 1996 was a hell of a lot different to now), it's just that it mutated into the snobbish nonsense it is now.
What the fuck is that about?
I'm starting to absolutely detest the scenes in London from what I'm hearing.
Read the bit above Wrighty

ANYWAY... why is it closing down if Alkan's just going to set up a new club night? Venue problems?
Indeed.
I think they're more than happy to say that it's wasn't 'just about the music', like, perhaps, most Rock'n'Roll isn't.
They're not Coldplay, after all.
However, the music was fucking ace a lot of the time. Shame allwaystired got distracted by the crowd and forgot about that!
All they asked that you didn't dress out of the next catalogue, or, if for whatever reason, you had to during your working day, you changed out of it and <gasp> had some fun with the way you look!
of course, they didn't realise that this insidious policy would fatally undermine music and all good that it brought to the world...
what? eh?
oh.
anywhere with a dress code
is not fucking worth bothering with
Having a dresscode
makes it no different to Oceana or any of those other weekend chav chain-niteries.
yep
it's just a matter of style
When I went
I thought it seemed less dress-up than white heat, most people hadn't really made much of an effort or anything. The door policy just seemed to be for keeping out any 'unsavoury' types they didn't like the look of.
Depends
They're fun if they're of the ''be bold! dress up! be imaginative! play!' nature. Adds another dimension to the night, makes for a conversation piece, etc. Less fun if they're of the 'fuck off if you're wearing ________, _______ or ________", or are just an excuse for door staff to behave like rude fascists to people they take a dislike to/don't deem pretty/cool enough.
good riddance
we went once in 2002 and for the first 10 minutes we were there music was ok then it was shite dance versions of half decent songs all night, populated largely by scenester twats on too much coke, the door guy wouldn't let us leave any flyers because he said we were competition (I pointed out we were on a completely different night it didn't make any difference). I lost my rag at that point being extremely frustrated and threw my half inch of water at him, and then the bouncer drenched me with water out of a speay gun.
We didn't go back. Based on our experience if that club had anything to do with music I'll eat my Elmo. I like places where people trade flyers, dress how they like, and the music counts.
bf
I went once and people thought I was Erol Alkan
To be fair, you do look like him
I might hit this up.
bf
I swear- he'd just got married or something, so wasn't there, but three or four people who sort of half knew him congratulated me on getting married, and asked why I wasn't on honeymoon. Very odd
None of them bought me a drink though. Bastards
You DO look like him!
went once
in 2001 and the music was rad. it was the first time i heard the strokes. i was drunk but i remember lots of sexy swedish girls. it was at an underground venue called the end. i wonder if its still there?
it does still happen at the end
for another couple of weeks anyway
This dress code thing
is making me feel sick.
I can't imagine there being anything like this in Liverpool, Manchester or Leeds.
I hate some people.
Yes, it's harsh but....
I feel a lot more comfortable at Trash than I ever would at, say FROG (your average catch-all indie night in London) and this is not just because the music is a million times more interesting. My friends and I have got into fights (mere scuffles really but still) at places like FROG *spit* and Club NME *spit*. (Even White Heat once. I love White Heat but they don't have a dress code.) Never at Trash though, it just doesn't happen. It's a slightly different atmosphere.
The bottom line is that the music is mostly, pretty awesome and I'd never go otherwise. I guess the people are just a different kind of dickhead.
I totally agree
although I haven't been to Frog other than to dj, and that was a couple of years back now, otherwise my allegiances are always with ASK. Trash was, and is great, and the dress code was not something to exclude people because they weren't cool enough, they would let you in if when questioned, you knew a little bit about the kind of music they played. It's about the fact that it's a really busy night, and they want you to be surrounded by people who are there because they appreciate the music, not because they've walked by and fancy getting drunk near some flashing lights.
As for Trash closing...well...Erol is too busy now really isn't he? What with the remixing and the production work he's doing. People shouldn't worry though...just wait and see what happens...
you have to take it in a context
of when it was started, though.
If I ran a club night...
...I'd have a dress code.
Sexy dress code.
And if I ran a club night
I'd have only one code... A personality code. - No violence.
That is all. Dress naked for all I care.
Ha ha ha ha
Good bye shit club!
DRESS CODE
There were many reasons for the dress code @ trash!
the main one was effort . It didnt matter if u looked good or not , if you had spent time to get ready for a good night out it was accepted . Even if people looked shit they were quizzed on music and then let in !
The dressed code was obviously there for a reason !
Trash was the only place u could go wearing make up or a silly outfit and feel right at home , no one would ever bother u !
i.e - in 10 years there wasn't one fight inside that club! think about that ! everything works for a reason!!
