Best song of all time

I throw open the net....whats the best song of all time..you can only have one!

  • Re: Best song of all time

You've compromised your position by not having one yourself.
  • Re: Best song of all time

"Happy Birthday", especially when you fill my name into the gaps.
    • Re: Best song of all time

You've got to admire happy birthday. I've also got a lof of respect for the poor bastard who wrote Auld Langs Eyne.

I'm Too Sexy by Right Said oceanrain.

I'm too sexy for this DiS
    Too sexy for this list
    Too sexy for this thread
What's this pounding throbbing in my head?

    Honorable Mention:
    Sex Farm by Spinal Tap
It's Not Unusual by Tom Jones
    • Re: Best song of all time

Seriously: Under the Bridge (RHCP - A very personal song)
Not Seriously: Waaaaaar is my shephard (Exodus)
      • Re: Best song of all time

Despite the critical dissapproval I will recieve for this I too think that 'under the bridge' is great, a very emotional and personal song (not to me but to Anthony whatisname)
Which is why I thought that the All Saints covering it was the most ridiculous ludicrous fatuous annoying cover in the history of the world ever......have they no shame?
        • Re: Best song of all time

Kledis is the word your looking for.
To me it's a deeply personal and emotional song, despite the abuse I am bound to get for saying that.

All Slappers have no shame - the Slapperton sisters in particular. It was a shame that when they did their version of it they didnt fall off the edge of the crumbling computerised building.
          • Re: Best song of all time

joy division - love will tear us apart
            bowie - heroes
            • Re: Best song of all time

Brilliant distillation there John. I would never have the discipline to do just two. Cant really argue with your choice either.

              How about
'Walk on By' written by Burt Bacharach performed by many.
'Along the watchtower' Jimi Hendrix version (which automatically disqualifies claims from stairway to heaven)
monkey gone to heaven - the pixies

Too many great smiths, buzzcocks radiohead beatles songs to differentiate between.
e.g. how do I choose between creep and paranoid android.

Blimey for a moment there I had forgotten the cocteau twins......OK the best song of all time is
either Lorelei, Persephone, Pandora, Carolyns Fingers, Peppermint Pig or Theft and wondering around lost, or sugar hiccough all by the cocteau twins.
              • Re: Best song of all time

Yeah, I'm kind of a terribly disloyal fan, having loved Radiohead SO much, I've now totally gone off them. I know they are still brilliant, they are just no fun. Bad innit. Phases, phases, phases, thats me, but these two songs are just always perfect, no matter what phase I'm in.
  • Re: Best song of all time

            Great choice! Atomic
            Bohemian Rhapsody
AND.... Sound of the Underground *runs*
  • Re: Best song of all time

    or
    Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen.
    • Re: Best song of all time

Hand in Glove - The Smiths

      • Re: Best song of all time

The Fall = 'The Classical' springs to mind? But its quite hard to say really

The Fall = 'The Classical' springs to mind? But its quite hard to say really
        • Re: Best song of all time

Hmm...could be The Falls classical, or The Smiths hand in glove (By the way I actually preferred the arrangement on the version where Sandi Shore does the instruments are a lot 'harder')

          I forgot 'A Forest' - The Cure

I also forgot to mention the following before.........Hearsay Please, pepper tree, In the tinderbox of the heart, Pearly Dewdrops drop, Fivrten fiftyfold, when mama was moth, sugar hiccough, Lazy calm, the thinner the air, blue bell knoll, athol brose, fifty fifty clown, frou frou foxes in midsummer fire, pale clouded white, those eyes that mouth, hitherto..... all by the cocteau twins
          • Re: Best song of all time

            Everyone's cheating!!

Darcy's taking his ball home chaps ;)

I've been trying to think of one all morning. I can't.

The closest I've got is 'Get Ready' by The Temptations or 'Sittin' On The Dock of the Bay' by Otis Redding.
