dunno if this post has been done before. i haven't decided yet. Although i have a penchant for wayne coyne's more philosophical lyrics, and i am partial to Morrissey's "The joke that isn't funy anymore," i am not sure whether they qualify as the greatest lyrics of all time.

I always thought that Calla's lyrics would be good if i could understand what he was singing about.

Re: Best lyric of all time...

i have to agree on the most part. I take it you're referring to the line 'i've seen this happening in other peoples lives but now it's happening in mine' - classic.
Personally i think The Libertines have outstanding lyrics and i don't give a fuck what any of you Pete Doherty haters think, don't take this chance to lay into him again.
'is it cruel or kind not to speak my mind and lie to you rather than hurt you.'
Bob Dylan too, but thats obvious, bright eyes, devendra banhart all superb!

Re: Best lyric of all time...

i forgot to mention 'boom boom boom, i want you in my room' that line has never been beaten.

Re: Best lyric of all time...

"i could of been someone/ well so could anyone, you took my dreams from me, when i first found you/ but i kept with me babe i put them with my own cant make it all alone i built my dreams around you"

Re: Best lyric of all time...

True that the Libs have good lyrics. Its just a shame theyre all along the same lines of "Me and Carl are best mates, no we not we hate each other".

My favourite is probably "It goes like this, the fourth the fifth. The minor fall, the major lifts." From a Mr. Jeff Buckley.

Everybody's sayin' that the Scatman stutters
But doesn't ever stutter when he sings.
But what you don't know I'm gonna tell you right now
That the stutter and the scat is the same thing.
Yo I'm the Scatman.

Re: Best lyric of all time...

I dreamed about killing you again last night,
And it felt all right to me,
Dying on the banks of Embarcadero skies,
I sat and watched you bleed,
Buried you alive in a fireworks display,
Raining down on me,
Your cold hard blood ran away from me to the sea.

Wilco - Via Chicago

Re: Best lyric of all time...

Are there really ones like these?
The ones I dream
Float like leaves
And freeze to spread skeleton wings
I passed through before I knew you

Re: Best lyric of all time...

Wilco lyrics need a new thread of their own ;)
