The frequently bandied-around assertions that it was the "pop music of its day" and that "modern pop wouldn't exist without classical music" are utter bollocks though.
Some of it was: Haydn, for example, was sneered at by the critics for being populist. Vivaldi was also a hack writer who spent most of his time banging out operas - which were open to the general public - rather than the concertos everyone remembers him for now.
I would say No, it has little in common. In classical, the energy is contained within the interpretation of the notes written on the page - like the words written in a novel. In popular music, the energy is contained in the performance and animalistic instict nature of the sound - like acting in the theatre or film. That's the way I see it.
Bands like Sigur Ros annoy me. They're absolute, pretentious toss because they aspire to be something akin to classical but they still use all the same boring tonic-dominant notes and it's so dull in that way - there's no dissonance or creativity. That track 'Staralfur', it repeats the same fucking notes all the time. That's nothing like classical music - it wouldn't be so dumb and narrow. Whereas if you were to put Shostakovich 10th Symphony on. It brings more out of you because it sounds strange and new and the arrangements scare the absolute living hell out of me.
Except that in much Baroque music the performers were expected to use the notes on the page merely as the basis of improvisation, which is more like your description of classical music.
Essentially it's difficult to generalise much about classical music, because it's typically used to cover several hundred years worth of pieces from a number of different opposing traditions. (Although Classical-with-a-capital-C music is only a more restricted repertoire from about 1750-1820).
knows that all music is basically the same anyhow.
when it really boils down what is the difference between psytrance, folk, and french romantic? not a lot really.
its all just a bunch of sound created with the aim of creating some sort of emotional response within the listener.
The idea that the aim of music is to provoke an *emotional* response in the listener is not universal to all music. That's not necessarily the way that musicians in the Renaissance or Baroque periods would have described their intentions.
yeh im only 15, so i dont know much about classical music, i only found this site trying to search for sigur ros chords, and i came across this guys comment having a go at sigur ros.
as i said i dont know alot about music, like ive got no idea what tonic-dominant notes means or anything, but i think it was pretty harsh what you said about sigur ros. everyone has different tastes in music, and i know that alot of people like sigur ros, and the song staralfur, which you pretty much ripped apart. fair enough if you dont like it, and dont think its as creative as other more classical music, but you dont have to call it dumb, boring, dull and narrow, cause alot of other people, including me, think that its a wonderful song.
you say that the shostakovich 10th symphony brings alot out of you, because its strange and original, but thats how alot of people think about bands like sigur ros. you shouldnt reli compare sigur ros to say an old classical composer, cause of course its gonna be different, theyre two different genres, and possibly two different timelines, but i dont dont know enough about classical history to say that fully. i think that you need to take into account other peoples music likes and dislikes, and accept that not everyone likes old classical music, especially teenagers like me, and be less criticizing over other types of music, just because it repeats alot of chords and notes.
fair enough if it annoys you, but you dont have to state your opinion as harsh as that, cause its better than most of the music coming out now days.
yeh cheers for that.
It has everything in common
Does it have any differences with popular modern music?
Metal obviously takes influence from baroque
Some things, yeah.
The frequently bandied-around assertions that it was the "pop music of its day" and that "modern pop wouldn't exist without classical music" are utter bollocks though.
very true
only after we silly white people had borified black music did classical re-enter the pop stratosphere and ELP everything up!
yeah
that's folk music
classical music was for the rich
hmm

THIS NEEDS PRAISE!
*Praise*
thank you.
I love you ho fo.
I was actually quite proud of that. And to think it nearly went unnoticed!
That is actually very funny
indeedy.
APPLAUSE
hahaha
more praise. well done
it invented the twelve tone equal temperament
notes used in all western music
yeah
they both have catchy tunes.
*everything* has the same chord progressions as pacabel's canon.
I think so
many Post-Rock, and Ambient bands are definately influenced by classical music, lke Sigur Ros or Explosions in the Sky
the invention of harmony
Which is pretty much a unique invention of Western European music.

..
I'm wrong, it's 'Samskeyti' but it makes fucking angry. It sounds like a made up word as well and that just makes me boil up. It's indefensible.
It sounds like one of those made-up words as well. What. Fucking. Twats.
?
?
You speak Icelandic then do you??
If not, how do you know it's a made up word?
err
Except that in much Baroque music the performers were expected to use the notes on the page merely as the basis of improvisation, which is more like your description of classical music.

Don't think that's true
