im trying to compile a cd full of great songs by female bands/artists
any suggestions would be great - all genres and eras welcomed
the rules are that it has to be a female singer, male bandmembers are permitted however..
'Stutter' by Elastica
'Baby Love' by The Supremes
'Violet' by Hole
'Promise Me' by Beverley Craven
'Alice' by Sleeper
'Wuthering Heights' by Kate Bush
'Shark' by Throwing Muses
'Your Ghost' by Kristen Hersch
'Feed The Tree' by Belly
'Divine Hammer' by The Breeders
'You're All I Need To Get By' by Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell
barbra streisand
le tigre
joan jett
courtney love
pj harvey
bikini kill
seven year bitch
girlschool
L7
KD lang
patsy cline
loretta lynn
wanda jackson
billy holiday
aretha franklin
wendy o williams
patty smith
actually, i could go on for hours here. can't you be a bit more specific!!
patti smith - rock n roll nigger
the pretenders - night in my veins
velvet underground & nico - all tomorrows parties
queen adreena - pretty like drugs
mommy & daddy - what is the function
peaches - fuck the pain away
I don't know if this list is any good but they are some of my fave songs - all sung by females!
billie holiday 'Strange Fruit'
elizabeth cotten 'Freight train'
nancy sinatra 'These boots were made for walking'
Patti Smith 'Pissing in a River'
Debbie Harry 'Atomic'
nico 'feme fatale'
the slits 'i heard it through the grapevine'
Dusty Springfield 'tupelo honey'
The Breeders 'Cannon ball'
throwing muses 'counting backwards'
bikini girl 'rebel girl'
Sonic Youth 'hendix necro' (for the line- you think cause i'm a girl you think you can ignore)
pj harvey 'dress'
Cat power 'moonshiner'
sleater kinney 'your no rock and roll fun'
actually i could go on and on... For newer stuff I reccommend the gossip, the kills, the yeah yeah yeahs, peaches, le tigre, ladytron, neko case, gillian welch, nina nastasia, joanna newsom, jolie holland...
any marianne faithful...especially "Why'd You Do it?", great song that contains the line "she had cobwebs up her pussy".
Also "Sliding Through Life on Charm" which sounds more drag revenge glory song than a female impersonator doing I Will Survive down a blackpool gay pub on karaoke night. Excellent.
also don't forget the slits, donna summer, M.I.A., grace jones, sleater kinney, electrelane, kaito or luscious Jackson.
you need to include something by verucca salt , their first album american thighs is best imho.
you also need to include hole - i suggest maybe plump or they do a nirvana song old age which aint bad, or maybe jennifers body.
babes in toyland or katastrophe wife also need to be included somewhere!! bruised violet is such an awesome track!!!
oh and some polly harvey, the slits, tori amos, alanis morissette, patti smith, janis joplin.
just a few of my personal favs :)
Pretty girls make graves
Dresden Dolls
Le Tigre
Are the only ones i can think of that i don't think have been mentioned already (although i kind of shot through the list, so they probably have)
Agreed, dummy is a great album - although someone nicked it about a year ago and i haven't got round to replacing it. I kept it so lovingly that it even had the receipt in the inner sleeve.
As for lamb, i remember hearing "gabriel" on the radio very soon after the news about september 11th - it all really sunk in then.
Check out Dusty Springfields Dusty In Memphis album for sheer brilliance. Also Aretha Franklins I Never Loved A Man The Way I Love You album. Some Connie Francis or Peggy Lee as well.
I saw Portishead live and they were excellent. If you like that kind of stuff, check out Ruby, Lesley Rankine, ex Silverfish's later band.
a classic diamond-in-the-rough lost british goth-femme-electro-rock record (except a lot better than i just made it sound. much, much better). Toni Halliday's band - she's probably most famous for singing on Leftfield's 'Original'. I think a Curve 'greatest hits' came out last year, even though they didnt really have hits.
Well, seeing as someone has already got dibs on Bjork and Cat Power, I recommend Aimee Mann (Red Vines, Pavlovs Bell) and Rilo Kiley (Execution of all things, It's a Hit)
Siouxsie Sioux - anything off Kaleidoscope or juju. Spellbound, Desert Kisses, etc.
Blondie - Rip Her to Shreds
Pretenders - Precious
Garbage - Vox
Oh, the chick that sings on The Glove's Blue Sunshine (Robt Smith/Steve Severin collaboration) sounds like Allison Moyet, and there are some gems on this one-off.
Carole King - anything from Tapestry
Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs - Maps (just a great, great song/vocal)
X - Exene and John Doe perform mostly duets to one degree or another. Los Angeles and Wild Gift are chalk full of great early punk tunes; only a few of the classic Brit punks a la the Clash, Sex Pistols did it better.
Stevie Nicks - Landslide. In the vein of Fleetwood Mac's usual sappy lightweight classic rock sound, Landslide somehow rises above to one of the all-time greats -status.
Diana Ross and the Supremes. Lots and lots of good ones. The one in particular - name escapes - that was the theme song for that short lived China Beach Viet Nam drama.
There are a couple of catchy Heart tunes I hate to admit I like, probably better in the embarrassment thread.
Lisa Stansfield. I only have the Been Around the World and ay, ay, yah record, but there are some super sultry sexy tunes on it. Good stuff.
Kate Bush - Been Running Up that Hill.
The Breeders - Cannonball.
Shania Twain - for the cover photo only.
Dresden Dolls - Girl Anachronism, or I like track 1 a lot, too.
Alright, there's enough for four CDs. And I didn't even get to Marilyn Monroe's Happy B-Day Mr President digitally altered to now be Happy B-Day OceanRain, or who was that? Shelley Winters' I Love Money; or Nancy Sinatra's These Boots Are Made For Walkin'; Annie Lennox; and gads more. Whew!
For some heavier music try out:
My Ruin
Jack Off Jill
Kittie
Snake River Conspiracy
Obviously the likes of Elastica, Sleater Kinney, Bikini Kill et al should be in there somewhere too. And Nightwish are pretty good, like Evanescene but not manufactured or fake.
Theres nothing I like more than to see a chick with a guitar or drums rocking out, puurrrr.....
Martha Wainwright - Dis Recordings very own. http://www.marthawainwright.com
Emmy-Lou Harris - Recently been blown away by her voice doing backing vocals on one of the new Bright Eyes albums. Waiting for some cds to arrive. http://www.emmylou.net/
Azure Ray - Lush female vocals from a twosome on Saddle Creek http://www.saddle-creek.com
Rilo Kiley - Also on saddle-creek, some ace wunderpop going down.
Le Tigre - You can get some mp3s from http://www.letigreworld.com/sweepstakes/html_site/song/song.html
Shivaree - This lot had a little bit of success a little while back. Really loved their singers voice. http://ourlabel.co.uk/shivaree/
Alice & The Enemies - New band from London town. Like a sultrier PJ or scuzzier YYYs. http://www.theenemies.co.uk/
Can't think of anything else off the top of my head.
Loads of great suggestions so far but I dont think I've seen
Trickys - Overcome
Any thing by Liz Frazer (Cocteau twins or on Massive Attacks Mezzanine Milk Group 4 or Black Rain, or This Mortal Coil - Song to the Siren (Perhaps this is the best track to include))
Xmal Deautschland - Incubus Succubus (the original rough/raw version)
Sam Brown - You better stop (yes Jamelia you had better stop, this was a foolish song to try to cover considering the original)
I see Kate Bush is being mentioned a lot recently....obviously Wuthering heights was a big stand out single, but I would like to mention a superb brilliant B side of hers 'Lord of the reedy river' written for her by Donovan and was on the B side of 'sat in your lap'.
If you have to pick Bjork how about her earlier sugarcube days I like 'Deus'
Candi Staton 'Young Hearts'
Linda Lewis - Its in his kiss (brilliant blockbusting ear bleeding disco)
Taste of Honey - Boogie Oogie Oogie
Portishead - Sour Times
Sundays - DreamTime
Sandi Shore - Hand in glove
Donna Summer Aretha Franklin Randy Crawford Billie Holliday Shirley Mansun, Debbie Harry, Nico (I've seen her live, that the sort of rank that us oldsters can pull over you kids)

'Shark' by Throwing Muses
'Your Ghost' by Kristen Hersch
'Feed The Tree' by Belly

Re: women rockers
Some Lamb stuff is ok, as is some Portishead.
You could also go for Northern state (All girl hip de hop).
Dusty springfield, heck even some dolly parton may sneak on there.
Re: women rockers
try their first album, with lusty / cotton wool / gorecki on it.
and dummy by portishead is one of the most essential records of the 90's i reckon.
Re: women rockers
As for lamb, i remember hearing "gabriel" on the radio very soon after the news about september 11th - it all really sunk in then.
Re: women rockers
You know, my flatmate doesn't like bands with girls in them, can you believe that???
Re: women rockers
I saw Portishead live and they were excellent. If you like that kind of stuff, check out Ruby, Lesley Rankine, ex Silverfish's later band.
Re: women rockers
Curve - Doppelganger.
