The Forum started to fill up with Furryheads, and a bewildered young man came to the stage with his acoustic guitar in hand and sat down on a stool. His name was Teflon Monkey aka Rhodri Viney, a Bargoed boy who plays lush folk music, in a style unlike no other in the 00’s. He introduced himself to the audience and swiftly got on with his set. Naturally he started with ‘Now Wash Your Hands’ a song taken from his Placid Casual E.P, I don’t think the NME could manage to slag this song off without the medieval-esque recorder and xylophone, though I’m sure Swells would try! It’s a regular folk song á la Jim O’Rourke with sweeping emotive lyrics. Rhodri is a self confessed fan of the recently deceased guitarist John Fahey, and this shows on the rest of the set.

As well as the superb guitar playing the boy knows how to write gorgeous lyrics, we’re talking Bright Eyes-esque poetry, and ‘Keep The Light On’ is a prime example “I tried to run, tried to hide, Tried to keep it all inside, But what I sang earlier is true, When I can't stop thinking of you” .

I was mesmerised by the John Fahey type playing during ‘I Wouldn't Want It Any Other Way’. The song began at a snail’s pace with Rhodri slowly fingering the strings, the tempo then gradually picked up, until his fingers were jumping around his guitar at a 100mph, and then the tempo steadily returned to the speed it was at the beginning of the song. The vocals also seem to creep, then leap with Rhodri reaching Bellamy and Yorke-like notes every so often. With the contrast between sharp and bitter and smooth and tender, it’s one of the best-written songs I’ve heard this year. “I say I don't want these good times to fade, That is the stuff of which true dreams are made, But we know they've only just begun.”

He’s nineteen, he’s supported the best band in Britain, and he has enough songs for at least a couple of albums, don’t you just hate him!
