Take more care in aiming your criticism.

I think The Harry/nazi thread shows that most people have not kept on the ball enough , there is something that should be criticised more acutely than Harry (In this case) even if you hate the Royals you should not allow your own critical integrety to be fooled by the newspapers.

Let me ramble a bit first to explain.

Anyway as you may know, I mostly think that the Royals are not to be admired, on the whole, as people, certainly people should not be looking 'up' to them, If we just take it as read that we know they are not exceptional in any way other than ther priviledge that has been granted them, by chance of birth, and that we may consider this wrong in a society which still seems to slightly equate wealth with good.
We would then be left with....a) a teenager, who has probably had a disturbed and confusing childhood/adolescent, and had confusing and elitist advice given him by his father and grandfather, b) who knows what bizarre adolescent reasoning was behind the wearing of the swastika? When I was his age I know I was perverse....maybe some of his wayward mates had been ribbing him about his great great uncle being Hitlers mate and he thought that that would be jape to dress like that in front of his freinds...
b) we are basically assuming that his crime is one of foolishness and insensitivity (OK I know you want to hang all the royals with this incident but) the point is if he was foolish, it was because he did not consider the fallout and upset from his actions, even though in his position he should have expected to have been on the front pages, so he is a foolish niave teenager who does not consider the consequences, and as a result has been accused of insensitivity due to the effect it has had on those who were affected by the haulocaust.
BUT BUT BUT....before the newspapers published the pictures, no one was upset cos no one knew, they published that he had upset people, before they had been upset, they were only upset once they read the paper.
The only excuse that the paper would have had in publishing was if it thought that Harry genuinly was a facist. As it is I believe them to be far more involved in the mass upset caused then Harry, (Unless he did it knowing that it would get out and cause upset)
The papers caused any mass upset through the pursuit of a good cover and therefore money.
Harry caused the mass upset through teenage foolishness at not thinking about the likely consequences
of his actions.
I'm sorry say but most people have been decoyed into blaming Harry, when your efforts should have been concentrated on castigating the papers (In this case) for extreme hypocrasy (In this case).
The Royals may be wrong but the Sun was wronger (In this case)
Stay frosty people, ......be aware....it is very easy to be led astray, especially when you become convinced of something.
Take out the scummy journalists first, then the royals, then foolish niave teenagers.

Although I do think the queen does her job as a diplomat well, shame she can't as a queen keep her family in line.

  • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Of course I did not mean physically take them out, that would be counter productive. (I was just trying to sound cooler, to counteract my over-fatherly sobriety)
    • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

The phrase "It sells newspapers, thus pays my wages" would be the journalists comeback on this subject.
      • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Yes....would you not feel any consience about the idea of knowing the whole world is as yet ignorant of Harry wearing a swastika, so no-one affected by the holocaust is upset. You publish the photos, whilst writing about how insenstivive he is cos of the upset it will cause to those affected by the holocaust, before they have been, can you not see that you as the newspaper are an essential link in upsetting so many people?
The argument the journalist may follow would be, well they get paid money for nothing I've got to pay the rent....just cos someone acts badly and is privilaged doesnt give you the carte blanche to run around doing whatever you want to just cos you think someone else is worse.
All news does not have to be printed unless it is important...i.e we do not have to print pictures of dead bodies (If they are too graphic) to accompany stories of death. In this case it is not that important that a young idiot wore something in bad taste.....please witness the jrecent joke thread....Harry was foolish....are you really shocked by that....is that a revelation? does that help you make decisions better ? didn't we already think he was foolish? was he ever going to be in a position of power? don't we expect them to make huge gaffes? did people need to get upset to learn nothing new?
        • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Also the journalist can write it.......the major fault lies with the editor who decides to publish it.
    • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

The sun & several other papers continually feed us this sh#t. And because of the stress put on these stories we feel titilated by our & others collective outrage.

Were you upset, distressed by the picture? I wasn't anymore than by watching an episode of allo allo.

Was the auschwitz survivor upset? Quite probably & that supports creakyknees argument...the sun is not publishing the pictures for them, or their benefit. And it is certainly not helping rational judgment.
  • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

The really sad thing about this is that the sort of ppl who read the sun will take it as gospel, and not really think about it.
    • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

While true in some cases, the real sad thing is that you are bound by such a stereotypical view of readers of The Sun.

      It's kinda ignorant, dontchathink?
      • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Well actually, no, it's a view formed from real life. Unfortunately.
      • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

It's the same view Sun journalists have...
    • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

It does come down to the editor at the end of the day, but again its money that is the main factor in the decisions that get made. I think big business conglomarates have too much influence in this world (esp over in the US). In a perfect world, all news would be "worthy" and not sensationlist but unfortunately its not the case.
I read the Daily Mirror today, and there was a massive spread about a Holocaust victim saying "he has no idea what it was like" etc.
      a) Of course he doesnt, he wasnt there and b) I'm sure whilst wearing the offending object, he wasnt going around saying "Yeh, the holocaust was a good thing...I agree with the ethics behind" etc. Its that kind of propaganda that gets my back up because its making issues appear that dont need to be! We've all done silly things in our youth, and who can honestly say they've never used a stereotype i.e. "gay" or something in reference when larking around with friends? Does that make you a homophobe? Yes it was silly, but only because of his position. If he was part of general census, I doubt it wouldve caused such a fuss.
      • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

I think this is worrying cos even though people don't take the sun as gospel...many of the people who have criticised Harry before they've criticised the newspaper, probably don't read the sun, they may also be intelligent, hell even I manage to get influenced by the tabloids (Often my counter reaction).
The newspapers are a major force int the shaping of what we as a nation debate/have opinions about....they have no responsibility (other than sales) and political parties are frightened of reigning them in as they know they may become (more) the subject of the newspapers criticism, they are dangerous.....I would like to see a cross party governmental body insist on them instilling some standards/responsibility?? freedom of the press?....how about weighing that against a very few powerful men enslaving democracys's debates? Perhaps the problem is that the monopolies and mergers has abjectly failed in the first place, a way has to be found round this issue, it cannot be ignored just because we are frightened of endangering the freedom of speech.

Otherwise the only way to go about things democratically would be for the public to become aware, and when the Sun or Mirror (whatever) do something hypocritical or wrong or cheap, we should boycott them for a few days (after we have got our vicarious fix from the initial story of course) that would soon encourage them to adopt some moral integrety, but that isn't likely is it?
        • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

          Not really no.

To have the country on the whole "stop" buying for a few days, no chance at all. For some people, its just as natural as putting on socks to pick up a rag off the news-stand on their way to work, college etc. Maybe if they started reporting on the little secrets in the buyers lives, that would have an effect.(although the Daily Sport might cover that stuff on its own!)

I agree to a certain extent that they must report on things, but its the fallout after the first "fix" that does the main damage. They dont have to run pages and pages of the world and his brothers view on every conceivable strain of the story. The fact our government are scared of them is a worrying statement. If we end up getting ruled by the papers, we as a nation, would be fucked!
          • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

On a mildly related note, one of the highlights of my working day is when my mate and I nip to the canteen with the Daily Star and The Sun. The stories that make their pages are funny enough, but their problem pages are funnier than an dog on an skateboard. Why when you find your missus in bed with your best mate, your uncle and the local lawn bowls committee you would sit down and right a letter, as opposed to opening a can of Whoop-Ass (tm) I do not know. The beauty of both publications is how you take them, and I take them as 30 minutes where I can switch my brain off at work and read comics
        • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Horrible, horrible tabloid press. Although I've got a bit of admiration for the Mirror after they didn't go along with the 'spreading democratic western values' tosh that most newspapers used to justify the Iraq war.
  • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Not meaning to sound rude Creaky but everyone has their opinions. What he did was silly and irresponsible end of. I don't think people should try to explain his motives for him. I'm sure he didn't have any and made a simple error in costume choice. Doesn't stop him being stupid and insensitive does it?
    • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Best thing about the tabloids are the little box stories that pop up on other other page saying things like -

"Zach LaDenhosen was arrested last night for crashing a stolen car into a tree in Antwerp, Belgium. Police found out it had been due to the fact Mr LaDenhosen, 26, is BLIND."

      So funny because its true!
      • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Amen to that, they really do print some pearlers. If some Romanian has killed himself and 8 mates by taking a grenade he found to the pub and then trying to eat it or something, I want a tabloid to tell me via a one inch square article at the bottom of page 17!
        • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

          Can I get another Amen!
  • Re: Take more care in aiming your criticism.

Patricide, no offence taken...Mrs Knees shares your view.

I do agree that he was foolish, as was I at his age, I wasn't really making apologies for his behaviour (sorry If it sounded like it) he needs to learn and become responsible.
I was probably not being very harsh on him cos his mistake, pales alongside the 'knowingly' bad behaviour of the wily newspaper men,
(can't you picture the editor being shown the story? him punching the air with a gleeful "yyeeessss!" har har har....the more publicity we can give this the better. Har Har Har Har Har ! " his lips flecked with unpleasent bits of spittle, and settling down to a well earned bout of onanism as he contemplated the speculative 'what sort of girls attract Harry? photo shoots with semi naked nazi regalia clad women' they could do in the future).

I have enjoyed the photo strips in the agony pages though. My favourate ever was a dowdy mid 40's bloke with a cap discovering his wife (in flimsy nighty) with another bloke in his potting shed (He'd been too busy gardening to pay her enough attention I think).
The problem is you don't have to swallow everything the sun says....you may think you are just reading it ironically or cyunically or just for the bits you choose, but it still directs the topics of controvasy (cant seem to spell that)....The Mark Thatcher story was real news, but I guess it was already public...it wasn't an exclusive, it didn't seem lurid enough.
