30 Seconds To Mars: Attack
It would be so easy to slap a big fat zero on 30 Second To Mars’s latest single and be done with it. Surely there’s no need to actually listen to a post-hardcore band fronted by Requiem For A Dream star and straight-man’s safe-wank Jared Leto to know how it will sound? Well ignorance isn't always bliss, as although 30 Seconds To Mars fall far from breaking any boundaries or writing a classic, 'Attack' is a perfectly listenable song.
From its interesting minor-key synth-electro introduction through to its near-anthemic chorus, 'Attack' is surprisingly catchy, and Jared Leto's vocals are stronger than would be expected. Sure, they follow the paint-by-numbers sigh-to-scream formula and deliver only the most predictable of angst-ridden lyrics to a tee, but they sound a lot less-forced than those of many a fellow emo compatriot and accompany the crunching guitar work perfectly.
If they could strengthen their songwriting further, and shrug the plastic-coating production that seems to smother every American post-hardcore release, then 30 Seconds To Mars could be an interesting prospect. Let’s hope they take the few distinguishing elements from this effort and build up from there.

American
screamo/emo by numbers. Dull dull dull...

everything about them is soooooo overblown
checked out the myspace page, the songs are okay....BUT it all seems to be about the image, the fact that Leto is in the band and shitey "art-y" videos.
make me think of my vitriol and angels & airwaves all at once somewhow...

ohh
i did this with their last album. i went out and bought it cos i heard it was good and i think, beyond the initial 'maybe it will grow on me if i play it AGAIN' thing, have probably played it about twice, if that.
seriously, why can't they just start making my so called life again? he was so much better at that.

post
hardcore??? they have obviously changed their style since their debut album,(the band wagon rolls on) which had a more industrial sheen to, but that sucked anyway

Leto's Face
By God better not be a map of the world. I liked that song until the chorus, then I tuned out. I'm sure this one will be on Fuse soon and I'll find it equally inspiring.

seen it
on the monument to ineptness that is freshly squeezed on channel 4 this very morning. A'lkaline-Trio lite' I muttered to myself and carried on with the daily grind having been profoundly unmoved. NEXT!
