The Newcastle five-piece return with a track of immense power and focus, whetting the appetite for forthcoming second album Our Earthly Pleasures.

‘Our Velocity’ is as lean as a greyhound, yet packs a punch worthy of Hulk Hogan’s 24-inch pythons, and its execution is as deft and accomplished as that of a brain surgeon. Gil Norton’s production is superb, expertly accentuating the band’s trademark precision. Paul Smith’s vocals are bang on the money in this respect, too, with opening couplet, “I’m not a man, I’m a machine / Chisel me down until I am clean.”

Maximo Park manage to cram more ideas into the track’s three and a half minutes than they have any real right to, forming one exceedingly satisfying whole which will no doubt set fans of debut long-player A Certain Trigger into a frenzied, drooling mess until the release of follow-up Our Earthly Pleasures on April 2nd. For ‘Our Velocity’ is not a huge departure for the band, but still, it’s a single that’s damn difficult to argue with.

my single of the year

so far.

^ this

^that

I really like the melody

and the vocals. Good to see a return of the energy which made "Apply Some Pressure" so great but was sadly lacking from the rest of A Certain Trigger (the singles from it, anyway). Hopefully it will have a stronger presence on the new album.

Having said that, I really don't like the keyboard. I think it's totally unnecessary, almost like a gimmick, and the cynic in me can't help but think it was added merely to exploit the current popularity of electronica, "new rave", etc. Still one of the track's of the year so far though.

i am

sure that nearly all the songs on the first album had keyboards too

i hav seen them live a lot of times and the keyboard played playes on all songs

this new single is ok, but there are better tracks on the album

this///

this single is the best thing the've done. not too struck on the album though.

I could listen to this.......

.........on repeat for some time. Bloody great.

Sounds like

LCD Soundsystem's "Movement" spliced with Ted Leo.

^

totally true

Razor-sharp Maximo

Paul Smith's vocals are indeed "bang on the money."
Ignore those who say Maximo are
a)pretentious
b)miserable
c)"a little kid's group",as a friend(?) of mine rather weirdly put it.
This single should be No.1.
End of story.

This single should be No1

it'd be nice for the number 1 to be something thats actually good.

Perfect slice of indie worth listening to. Top stuff

word

all that there.

please don't try and lump this lot in the "angular" or "choppy" bracket. certainly not "new rave". stuff and nonsense, the lot of 'em.

make no mistake: this is rock band. why would they have got gil norton on board otherwise. i've seen them live and they fill big rooms with a big sound and a big performance.

now. just to make me look super fucking cool, for the next album they should have steve albini at the controls.

Yes

Yes yes yes yes.

This is just great.

i love this

it took me a little while, but i love it.

i think its rubbish

i see the appeal of the 'park, but i just don't like them at all!

-

Not usually a fan, but this is a great song.

Angular, sharp indie pop.

Not interested any more :(

it's not angular or sharp!

it's good.

Great song

I don't rate

this song to be honest. I'll admit it is a solid pop song but doesn't really have that much to offer. I think the lyrics are a bit rubbish, though atleast they rhyme, i guess that is the most important thing.

'I'm not a man, I'm a beast / go to the kitchen and cook me a feast'

Pretty deep

....

'Im Not a man, im a machine/chisel me down until i am clean'

Brilliant, represents his tough exterior or somet.....

i'm interested to know

what machines require chiselling clean?

machines

that have become caked in mud which has hardened over time to a armour like shell.

I'm just guessing, though.

Mine

Represents the beast in society, demanding, controlling and very hungry.

It represents the traditional relationships between man/beast and women. In my lyrics 'man' is the modern, caring, sensitive creature. 'Beast' represents the sexist, more traditional husband or partner. In this sense he is ordering the lady to get his food after a hard days work at Greggs

Love it

Seeing how many people rate this

I tried to give it a listen.
Really average...

It's a grower

When I first heard it I though 'oh dear' but now I love it.

boring...

this is ace...

big thumbs up for the geordies

frantic song

but fairly average

i hope

the new album has the same great balance as a certain trigger. All the songs on that album are great, but they dont all sound the same. PS the coast is always changing is a tune.

.

I like this.

s

Fantastic single.

like

limasol mixed with apply some pressure

maximo

best thing they've done? bollocks.
