When there's such a dearth of tense electro-indie acts screaming from the big cities (whaddya mean you can name seven just by playing word association inspired by objects you can see in your bathroom?!), it comes as quite a surprise to hear that The Electric Cinema have thankfully tried something a little more adventurous. There is a definite Wayne-Coyne-space-symphony wail to 'Cut Down', maybe even a sign of Mercury-esque over-dramatics, but it matters little when there are melodic twines corkscrewing around the place like a more obvious Galaxie 500.

But see, that's sort of it. They forget to write a chorus and rely on the sheer drama of the squalling electronics and pulsing keyboard chords that run through the song like blood. Intensity is the key here, and it swells nicely throughout, but it never manages to capitalise completely in the way that, say, Fanfarlo have been demonstrating in recent months. If there was a little more to 'Cut Down' than some dusted-off disco frippery, then The Electric Cinema could have created a minor classic. As it stands, they've created a major departure from the fetid electro stable. That’s probably good enough for now.

this isn't a bad song...

but definitely lacking something...

chorus needed?

'The Electric Cinema could have created a minor classic'

I agree with that assertion - it's almost great.

I have to disagree however with the point about a lack of chorus. If you don't have the melody to 'Don't be held down by your fear of heights' going round your head after 1 listen you need your ears cleaned out. It's a great hook - and yes, I believe it qualifies as a chorus.
