It's supposed to be poppier. the band said it wouldn't just "appeal to weirdos". the songs i've heard are superb, sort of, definetly poppier, but just as eccentric. Aint heard anything so frenetic as Apologies To Insect Life or Favours In The Beetroot Fields though.
I always thought those two were the weakest songs on The Decline Of... anyway. Unless you count the opener. That album was incredibly strong in the middle though, the run from Something Wicked to Carrion was just awesome. Lately was a great song too although it could have been five minutes shorter and had a bigger impact. Really looking forward to the new material.
I think the album was great as a whole: sometimes you just have accept that that's a bands vision, and picking apart specific elements that don't fit your own personal preferences ain't too useful.
I'm waiting with baited breath for their new stuff: they are one the most intelligent & interesting bands of recent years. I love their military/ big bear thing. they've loads of ideas.
I was just about to make a comment on what an intelligent and insightful post that was (as most of Brainlove's words tend to be).
It was a personal opinion, just like myself and everyone else's comments are personal opinions. It wasn't a dig at anyone, it was a legitimate comment about music by somebody who appreciates music.
What are you talking about SMgem? That was a reasoned and positive response from Brainlove and also his own personal opinion, which he's entitled to make. Read it again.
wow. if she thinks that was me on a high horse, she'll really hate it when i actually get on one. that wasn't even a horses ankle, for me. that was sub-hoof. i didnt even think that was even mildly controversial. hmm. cheers though guys ;)
Regardless of how high this out of control metaphor was, i've been wondering what it is exactly that makes so many people with strong, passionate opinions, and mostly good taste in music behave like such unashamed sycophants towards John Brainlove? Like anyone else, he does make a bit of sense sometimes, but the guy really does suffer from a huge message board power trip and largely seems to enjoy putting the little guy down. Is that what a music discussion board is about? Is it fuck. Come on...
Hemulen, I personally am sick of personal attacks on this board which are misplaced and ridiculous. The misplaced and ridiculous comment by SMgem above towards Brainlove just pissed me off. If you read his comment, there is nothing in it to be arsey about. I don't believe he does put the little guy down, he enjoys, like most people on this board, reasoned debate and a bit of piss taking.
Now perhaps, you'd like to join in and promote that aspect of this board rather than the bitching.
I'm not really bitching at all, it was a sensible question. I'm not talking specifically about the remark on this thread. That is a product of the power trip i mentioned and one of many much worse. I've been reading this message board for a while under a different name but knew that if i dared criticise the sacred Brainlove i would come under a tirade of unnecessarily angry crap. Now my point remains, why does everybody kiss his arse?
I've become friends with Brainlove thru being on this website regularly / going to gigs etc. When I see people taking personal swipes at someone I consider a friend I have a big urge to defend them. Particularly when it's nasty / personal / childish. What was your previous name out of interest?
I don't really want to say. I'm in the same boat though. I've seen brainlove frequently making comments against real life friends of mine and i'm bored with it. I just find it a little strange that people are drawn to someone with such strong allegiance and don't dare disagree with what that person says, be it musical or completely personal.
He's actually quite likeable. I don't "kiss his arse", neither am I rude to him. What have you got against him anyway? He has his opnions and sticks to them but he is also open to listening to new things, and a lot of the comments he makes are extremely tongue-in-cheek. I would hardly say he is on a power trip, he just comes on here to discuss music and occasionally take the piss out of ol' moon face...
Ok, well i made my point and i don't wish to personally attack anyone's friends...but can we PLEASE not have anymore entire threads devoted to boosting his ego?! Thank you and good night.
my fucking question is just below this! Don't worry, I'm not bothered but I don't like the way he turned this into a brainlove post then accused everyone else of doing it.
Ahh - missed your cheery tones! haven't got a clue about software, so sorry! Am gonna need an education about stuff like that tho, coz I'll be on the IN-TER-NET at home soon - hurrah!!!! Sound and everything!
hmmm. jokey appreciation threads, nasty hate threads; i don't get it either. have just been coming on here for a few months & making comments, which is what this forum is for(um). More so lately as I've been pretty ill & stuck in the flat. it's just a bit of fun innit. or it's supposed to be. a few people on here have gone a bit far with the nastiness lately, which is a shame.
power trip? i don't think so. i admit i take the piss a lot, but it's never meant to be malicious, and i know when to stop... however, if people reveal bigoted attitudes i guess i can be quite ruthless with the put-downs. but no more than a few others on here really.
who are you anyway, and why the namechange? why not just say what you think without hiding?
all this controversy... again... weird.
Well, i was just gonna leave it but the main thing is i hate sycophancy. My real name isn't important, i wanted my thoughts to be listened to irrespective of the bands i like and any previous posts i have made. I'm not someone who's posted here a lot so don't worry about it. And i'll let it go after this, but it can be very intimidating to people (not me) when starting out on a new messageboard to have people crushing your comments and/or taking the piss. There's a difference between disagreeing with someone and putting them down. Now let's all be friends and get back to the music...
I take your point. But I really don't think I've been horrible to people to the extent you seem to think. Also, I think you're a bit in danger of reading people agreeing with me in a normal way as sycophancy. All the appreciation stuff was tongue-in-cheek anyway, y'know. But there you go.
is it available on free peer-to-peer file sharing software (that incidentally, I would never use or condone others using...) yet? I can't fucking wait to hear it.
Im not leaving my house the day I get it. Just sitting around and listing to it. I dont really think there is a weakest point in the album. Honestly I cant think of a single track that I just dont long to here sometimes.
does anyone know when it's released? some places say 21st of March, other say the 4th of April. I'm to lazy to do a proper check. very excited to hear it tho.
Apparently there's some outrage within the ranks of the (very) obsessed British Sea Power fans, as the band have changed the names of a few of the new songs, and apparently the old names were better. or something. i know the ones that they were calling 'Elegiac Stanzas' and 'How Animals Work' are no longer called that, they're still ace tho whatever they're called.

They aren't quite so epic, but the transition from the first song to Apologies...is just beautiful. And freneticness is exciting!
I thought A Wooden Horse was probably the weakest song.
The "i drink all day and play all night upon my cassio electric piano" one is just amazing though. as is Carrion and Something Wicked.
