middle names

talking of chavvy names reminded me of my horrific middle name... (it's not chavvy, just horrible).
anyway, my theory is that almost without exception everyone hates their middle name....
d'ya think? it could be a study... psychologically damaging middle names. damn these parents- they have no consideration!

  • Re: middle names

Brilliant idea for my psychology dissatation next year!

    What's your middle name then?
I must admit to having a dislike of my middle name, I won't say it cause I can't but it's the same name as Bananaman's alter ego.

And no I don't have a crow with Bill Oddie's voice!
    • Re: middle names

always a pleasure to be of service.

no i am not divulging the secret of my middle name...!!
      it's too private (and painfull)

unfortunately i have no accaintance with bananaman... what was his name again...
      ; )
      • Re: middle names

        Eric!

I'm pretty happy with my middle name, sorry to ruin your theory.
      • Re: middle names

        Bananaman
        • Re: middle names

I was thinking about becoming Tom E Aldous in tribute to our dear Mark, is this a good idea?
        • Re: middle names

My middle name is Petrie. As a child I was taunted and picked on because of my daft name but I have grown to love it.
          • Re: middle names

ahh see the secret is to never tell anyone your middle name- then no one will mock you for it!!
my friend's middle name is Armstrong.... she properly hates that!
        • Re: middle names

ha ha ha tom from sparks... if that is you real name....

damn you for ruining the theory already... im going to ignore that..
eric... cool... each to their own i say...!!
        • Re: middle names

Being from Denmark originally, I have a forename, two middle names and a surname. To pronounce all four is a struggle. You will probably never know what they are. And probably never care.

Anyway, Ben will do for short :-)
          • Re: middle names

awwwww go on!! please please please pretty please....
write them first as the lord intended then phonetically if you would...!
            • Re: middle names

I have changed my profile to show that I am not ashamed of my middle name and nor should anyone else especially you Froggy :-)
              • Re: middle names

E is not good enough sparky...
plus, if i were to put * up on mine after Chloe, not only would it not fit but it would also make guessing the horrific name verrrry easy...
not many names begin with *
                • Re: middle names

                  Z, X, Q

I bet its Xanthia or Xena or Quentin or Zelda

                  Do I Win?
              • Re: middle names

my middle name is kate, i see no shame in that

but I dp have a friend who's middle name is livingstone. poor boy...
                • Re: middle names

Mine is Stuart, nothing wrong with that.

My first name is Cuthbert though.
            • Re: middle names

Can't, gone all shy now...... :-)
    • Re: middle names

blaine from mystery jets' first name is stephen.
some people choose to be known by them.

i lie about my middle name, not cos its bad or anything, just a bit dull.
      so i say its Johannes.
  • Re: middle names

You could be onto something there.

    And no.
    • Re: middle names

ladyoftheflowers, you got lucky!! your parents had the presence of mind not to scar you for life.
      • Re: middle names

Mine are quite dull (although I do have two, which is something) - James and Stephen.

A friend of mine has the middle names Henry Llewellyn - now that's unfortunate.

Hopefully he doesn't read this forum.
        • Re: middle names

hmm the theory is crumbling... james and stephen... not very hardcore nasty names...!!
plus, i still believe that my (female) friend's Armstrong is the worst middle name i've come across...
i too hope she doesn't read this. although i happen to know she doesnt soooo im safe!
          • Re: middle names

Oi Froggy you haven't given us yours yet

My mates is Charles which ain't spectacular until you realise it makes his initials CCC

Me and my mates have a theory that Karl Kennedy's middle name must begin with K so his middle name is KKK!

My initals spell TEA. That's Ok but i don't like the stuff.
        • Re: middle names

I too have two middle names. As a consequence form filling can be a chore. I used to be mortally embarrased by them but now I am proud and defiant. I shall call my first child Ethelbert Beowulf Canute. Thanks for listening.
          • Re: middle names

you'r child shall no doubt thank you for that one....

Judge_B: deliver!! i wanna know your naaaaaames!
            • Re: middle names

They will thank me, yes, when they grow up to be proud and defiant. Plus if they complain I shall say the alternative was problem cock.
              • Re: middle names

how many children are you planning on nameing Ethelbert Beowulf Canute then??
i dread to think of the famale alternitive...
              • Re: middle names

problemcock easily has the best name on DiS.
  • Re: middle names

I was never given a middle name *sniff* but I remember a bloke at school who had not one but too very posh ones.

    ****** Chancellor, Macnamara *******

He did get a bit of stick but fortuantley for him he was built like a brick shithouse so pummelled anyone who crossed him with his fists. Ahh.....playground justice.
    • Re: middle names

yeh but tom, you havent *actually* said yours...
      E...
      errrr Engleburt
      Edward
      Ewan
      Eamon
      Edmund
      • Re: middle names

Er yes I did earlier or at least someone found out what it was

        It's Eric

        • Re: middle names

oh! i thought that was noiseaddict's name....
you shoulda kept quiet!! (not that eric isnt a *fantastic* middle name....)
personally i prefer Engleburt for you.... maybe you could change it?
          • Re: middle names

Well seeing that Englebert is such a celebrity in Leicester I could get away with it (Even if Tom Jones beats him in a fight everytime) but Eric is my grandfathers name so i don't wan't to disrespect him.

Just saw you profile, that was your 500th post woooo!!!!!

Now, give us your middle name...
            • Re: middle names

5000 woo!! and i didnt even notice.....
              yeah, Eric's cool....

              aha my middle name isssssssss.............................
              ......................

oh im outta time...!!! gots ta go xx
              • Re: middle names

                oops 500...
well y'never know it is not beyond the realms of possibility...
            • Re: middle names

I think that's why so many people end up with dodgy middle names, because it's usually the name of an older relative so it's really dated.

In generations to come i'm sure all our names will be mocked just as ruthlessly.
  • Re: middle names

Mine is totally normal, but becomes.....problematic.....in conjunction with my first- and surnames. My full name is Christopher John Daniel. Initials? That'll be CJD then. Lovely.
    • Re: middle names

My middle name is booooorrring: Louise.

So to liven it up I spell it the Spanish Way: Luiza
      • Re: middle names

If I have a daughter she will be Aedilhild Eanfled Sexburg. Nowt wrong with that.
    • Re: middle names

My brother's initials are the same: CJD.
      Christopher John.
  • Re: middle names

My middle name is as boring as Joss Stone on a Sunday.
    Louise
    *Yawn*

So to liven it up, I use it's Spanish version: Luisa
    • Re: middle names

Luisa is my mate's sister's name.

My middle name is 'Rhys' which i quite like.

There were some crazy middle-names in my year back in school, one kid's was 'Beneventula', whilst another's actual was 'de' so that his fullname was Kyle de Butler. mad. my girlfriend's sister goes out with a guy whose parents are from Sr Lanka, and he can't even say his middle name!
      • Re: middle names

Strangely enough Buenaventura was the real life Durruti's name! Aren't I interesting.
    • Re: middle names

I think every girl i've ever met has Louise as a middle name.
  • Re: middle names

My middle name is nit necesserily a bad name it just doesnt fit with the rest of my name.
    • Re: middle names

My middle name is "P" like Homers is "J".

Froggy...I think you at least owe us a middle name considering you refuse to put up a photo.
      • Re: middle names

homer's is actually "jay" which would make yours "pee"
  • Re: middle names

my middle name is John. At least a quarter of the men i know have that middle name. My theory is that most parents put all their effort into the first name and then lazily toss in john as an afterthought.
For the reocrd i quite like my middle name, better than having something stupid.
    • Re: middle names

my middle name is Charles, but my confirmation name is Elmo.........no,seriously.
      • Re: middle names

i HATE my middle name and no one shall ever know it! no one does know it, except the school and the exam board.
i feel your pain, frf... middle names are the invention of satan and other evil things.
        • Re: middle names

my middle name is...no, sorry I just cant do it
        • Re: middle names

          Is it Talula?
          • Re: middle names

I know someone (male) with the middle name Constantine.
We took the piss out of him for ages, until we found out that Constantine was a king of greece or something.
          • Re: middle names

            Maximilian
            • Re: middle names

mine's mark, it's too normal for my liking, i want something a bit different, Theodore would be nice.
              • Re: middle names

That's funny, I used to know a guy called Theodore Mark something. He insisted on being called Mark.
                • Re: middle names

my middles name is peter...which is also stupidly common
    • Re: middle names

What Nomis said. *Exactly* what Nomis said. Except that my parents didn't put any effort into any of my names, because I was supposed to be a girl.
  • Re: middle names

My parents spared my brother and I middle names...
  • Re: middle names

iv got a nice traditional scottish clan inherited (sort of) middle name ... and its not a bad name either
why be ashamed of your own name ? that mustnt feel too good
    • Re: middle names

I use to hate my middle name. I was always moaning about how boring it was. It was Mary- Christine Mary, I ask you, how boring was that?
So...I changed it to something more interesting!
      • Re: middle names

really ? whats it now then ?
        • Re: middle names

really ? whats it now then ?

What I post on every forum as... Star!
Certainly much less boring than it was before ;)

  • Re: middle names

My middle name is Dawn, which I prefer to my first name.
Apparently when my parents were thinking of baby names, my Dad meticulously checked for all embarrassing initials possibilities.
If I’d been a boy, my Mum had been all for the Colin Robert combination, which my Dad immediately vetoed on the grounds that to add those names before the surname Young was tantamount to child cruelty.
    I think I agree…
    • Re: middle names

my middle names ruby, everyone automatically assumes i hate which really annoys me because i quite like it
    • Re: middle names

I have a more boring middle name than Louise, and that name is Jane. I have four friends with the middle name Jane... must be common round these parts.

Another of my friends is from the netherlands and ahe has the impressive middle name of "Bang" !
      • Re: middle names

I have no middle name. i feel left out.
      • Re: middle names

That's brilliant - but it would be better if his middle name was "Bang!".
      • Re: middle names

"he" is actually a she... And Bang kinda suits her, she is literally explosive.
        • Re: middle names

My middle name is Hugh and I like it.

I met a Dutch woman called Blah.
          • Re: middle names

My fell name is Zachary Aud White

            • Re: middle names

Dutch names are as a rule crap:
Leefje, Bas ,Kees, Wim, Jan, Betje, Noach, Anke, Japjan, Cees, Elke Cokkie, Faas, Koos, Femke, Trijntje, Heike, Joos,Marijke, Mieke, Pim, Siemen etc etc
(I live in Belgium and I learn Dutch, so these are just names I have on this page from my book)

I also have two middle names (my two grandmothers names) and I think theyre really crappy: Margaret Una.... so my name in full makes me sound like a really old granny...
My friend is half Greek and half Belgian, and cos shes Greek she had to take her Grandmothers name for her middle name which is Chrissoula, and she reeeeeeeally hated that name, so they changed it to Christina... which I think is unfair on all the other poor people who have to take their grannies names.... ahem, like me!
            • Re: middle names

Is Aud pronounced Ord? Because that might make you sound a tad indecisive.

"Hi, my names Zachary. Or Dwight."
              • Re: middle names

no, sorry its prononced just like odd exept a little more u in the throught
                • Re: middle names

Ah, so you sound more like a paint colour then. "What shall we go for in the bathroom dear? Magnolia or Odd White?"

'tis a cool name. I often wish there was something distinctive about my name. Good names tend to be wasted on people who wish they had normal ones...
      • Re: middle names

That's my middle name too. The most boring middle name of all for a girl - FACT.
        • Re: middle names

          * That was a reply to Rrrachel's post about the name Jane.
          • Re: middle names

I have the male equivalent. Why even bother? Are you listening mum and dad? Why?
            • Re: middle names

In fact, why the first name too? Fuck I hate all my names.
  • Re: middle names

    ALAN!!

    rock!

and yes, i rather like it...

although i might add in something like "Zebedee" or "Drink Ink" after the Bearsuit song, or perhaps "Hello"?

Deed poll's apparently quite cheap nowadays...
    • Re: middle names

mines trevenonon which is cornish, .... duz ne 1 kno ne wer gud and cheap 2 stay in cornwall nequay high season, fun etcetc
      • Re: middle names

I can't understand a word of that message, sorry.

My middle name is Peter. It was my first name that my on-drugs-parents went to town on. Mama Bamos has a lot to answer for. Although my sister got stuck with Danelia. Which is like a proper name, only spelt wrong. I suppose I got off lightly.
        • Re: middle names

My dad was allowed to pick our middle names... therefore I got Marie and my sister got Melanie. I think he likes M's. I like mine better.
          • Re: middle names

My dad picked my middle name too, Frances. I think he wanted it to be in the boy way as he still calls me Lawrence despite me being quite obviously a girl. Still it gave me the initials of the greatest footballing side in the history of the universe, LFC. Till I went and got married...
  • Re: middle names

Mine's pretty horrific, was my Grandma's middle name - Theresa.

Her other name was Flora, maybe I got off lightly...
    • Re: middle names

      so basically,
most people dislike their middle names...
thats just the way it goes....
      mine is.....

      Jane.
      horrible horrible horrible.
what's funny is that when i was really young and me an my bro used to play games and be new people, i always called myself Jane... and i didnt *actually* realise it was my middle name untill i had already decided i hated it.
When people are being annoying (famile this is) they call me Chloe-Jane.
      which pisses me off.
No, don't even think about it...
      • Re: middle names

I'm quite pleased with my middle name which goes well with my first name. I've got my my dad to thank for that. He's something of blues fan (that's the music not Chelsea FC). Can you guess what it is yet?
      • Re: middle names

On the other hand you could call yourself CJ....like out of Reggie Perrin.
Jane is not a terrible name....just boring....
Just like my real middle name of Paul.....I have often lied and just said its P so it is slightly less boring......
So maybe every DISer who doesn't like their middle name....just use the initial.
        • Re: middle names

i am not convinced that CJ is the way to go....
although i did try that for a while when i was about...9?
          Chloe J. (something)
yeh... or i should just never bring up the topic of middle names...!!!
          • Re: middle names

so if middle names are based on relatives like grandparents..... does that mean everyones parents have even more prehistoric middle names??!

for some reason me, my sis or my folks dont have middel names

            • Re: middle names

Greek names, (especially for girls) are usually very pretty.

              Alessa (Protector)
Aricia (Princess of the Royal Blood of Athens)
              Elodie (Blossom)
              Anastasia (Ressurection)

I still think Anastasia is a pretty name, despite its connections with the She-Man singer.
              • Re: middle names

My brother has a double middle name where he's named after my grandfather and my parents brothers who both share the same name.

One of the names....isn't one you hear a lot nowadays. I once asked "where did you get a stupid name like that" to be told it was my grandfathers middle name.

                My dad's middle name is........
                CLIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
              • Re: middle names

Mrs Knees name is Melissa...I think it is pretty and it is greek so that kind of supports your theory.
I also think that Chloe is a nice name...so again you are vindicated.
Persephone is also pretty although it can be humourously mispronounced to be ugly (Percyphone)

I think a lot of the Eu prefixed names are nice.

By the way DISers.....did you all know that the word Europe is a greek word and means 'well watered'
A good name I think you will agree....one we should ponder on as Europeans to reflect on how relatively lucky we are.

How about Tisephone, Atropa, Hecate, Clotho, Lachises.
Psyche...My perception of them is clouded by other things but I reckon the sounds may not be too pleasent to the average British ear.
                • Re: middle names

Mellisa is a verypretty name, it means "Bee".
Melissa in anqtiquity was a very ancient goddess of the bees.

Persephone (pronounced Fur-Seff-On-ee) has two different forms, (the name means "Maiden"). Kore or Korai.
An unusual name, but hard to fathom for the average joe who thinks its something to do with a "Phone"

                  Hecate......Far Darter (Goddess of Witches)
Atropos, Lachesis and Clotho where the fates. Not sure what the other two mean, but "Atropos" means "Spinner"

"There are two types of people in the world - The Greeks and everyone else, who wish they where Greek"
                  - Gotta love that quote.

Some Greek names are hard on the British Ear.
                  Try pronouncing Lyaeus.
                  • Re: middle names

my aunt (by marriage) is greek, her name is Evanthia.
i really love that name, and i love her whole family (which is huuuge). my uncle and hers wedding was the most fun i have ever had. greek people are just fantastic.
                    • Re: middle names

Off Greak names for a bit I heard that snooker legend Jimmy White changed his name by deed pole to Jimmy Brown a few days ago.

Apperently he did this because HP Sauce now sponsers the brown ball and he did it for a laugh.
                      • Re: middle names

Evanthia...I think that means something about a blooming flower, not sure though, but it's a beautiful name.

I think Zoe is also a Greek name, it means "Light".

Gazza has also changed his name, he's now G-8.
                        I kid you not.

The Greeks are fantastic, the man downstairs is Greek and he said to me, "You nice Greek girl, you want to find nice Greek boy".
Except I'm not really Greek, only have some Greek blood.
                        • Re: middle names

'Have you got any Greek in you?'

                          'Do you want some?'

                          Sorry...

                            Where's that from?
                            • Re: middle names

haha that's in the league of gentlemen, except with German.
maybe its from somewhere else, but League of Gentlemen is better.
                            • Re: middle names

Lenry Henry did the same gag as Theophilus P. Wildebeest.

And he copied Mark E. Smith's middle name.
                          • Re: middle names

My mum is quite touchy about her middle name(s), we were banned as children from so much as uttering them. They can be quite an emotive subject
                            • Re: middle names

My friends middle name is St John pronounced sinjin - hehehe. He doesn't think it's funny tho..
                              • Re: middle names

Apart from my brother - the middle names in my family are very dull:

Louise (me, but I choose to spell it as Luiza)
                                Joan (my mum)
                                Margaret (Auntie)
                                Clive (Dad)
                                Judith (Grandmother)

                                Boring......

                                  Ok.......

                                  Hjalmar Dalqvist

please go easy, there are reasons for them and I do quite like them........
                                  • Re: middle names

ah psyche, your mum has the same middle name as me. how unfortunate because its the most grannified, dull worst name ever (no offence to anyone who's name that is). also, its my grans name and i hate her so the fact that i have her name makes me angry.

my dads middle name is MacGregor, which is nice and scottish. also my friend's (female) middle name is MacKenzie which is cool. my other friend's middle name is Alice, which she hates as she constantly get's "Alice? Who the fuck is Alice!?" haha.
                                    • Re: middle names

Wishpig, spell it the Spanish Version "Juana".
                                      It means Joan or Joanna.

I like the name Alice, think it's pretty, so is it's German form "Alix"
                                    • Re: middle names

didn't someone in Belle And Sebastien change their middle name to 'Reverb'? i'm sure it's true.

On a slightly different note, i decided the other week that if i were ever to have children, then i'd name them Appollo Creed Jones and Clubber Lang Jones.

That makes the names for my children look normal:

                                        Travis (Boy)
Athena, Kairi, Anastasia, Aricia, Alessa, Alice, Sarah or Fransisca (Girl)

That makes the names for my children look normal...

Sid, Seth, Satan, Elvis, Roger, Bart, Dee Dee (boys)
                                          Ari, Dee Dee (girls)

                                          heh.

                                            My middle name is Chumbucket.
  • Re: middle names

    i hate my middle name.
my full name is Katherine Sarah Louise Ashford, but Katie will do as the long version makes me sound like some long reigning monarch or something.
    not nice
    • Re: middle names

Katie is pretty, the other version of Katherine is "Catalina" which is Aragonese Spanish, so you could be "Catalina Sarah Luisa".
Don't know any other variants of Sarah I'm afraid except the French version "Sara".
Which makes the name look misspelt in my opinion.
      • Re: middle names

French version? I think you mean WELSH VERSION.
        • Re: middle names

Believe me Jober, it's the French version "Sara" as is "Clair"
          • Re: middle names

I don't like the predominance of Hebrew names normally but I do quite like 'Sarah'
          • Re: middle names

Sara's English, French, German, Jewish or Hebrew.

If you want variations: Sarai, Saara, Sari, Zara, Sarita, Sassa, Sally or Sadie. Hebrew, Finnish, Hungarian, English, Spanish, Swedish, English and English respectively.

I prefer a simple Sarah though.
            • Re: middle names

my middle name is freja (pronounced freya). i like it.
              • Re: middle names

I don't have a middle name. Instead I have a double-barrell surname, which I don't particularly like, so I usually give one name or the other.
              • Re: middle names

                I don't have a middle name

My parents were actually stupid enough to think that the Registry Office charged you more for registering additional names. So I have always been without one to the amazement of everyone the topic has ever come up. However the name Frank tends to run throughout the family so I might name my son (or daughter) that if I ever had one.

Freya or Freja is a very pretty name, it means "Noble Woman" I think.

My mothers sister was called "Sarah" and she herself was given a variant of the name "Sallie".

Unfortunately my name is as boring as hell and there is only one version of spelling.
                  • Re: middle names

I like Freya too...Mrs Knees and I were considering it if we had had a baby girl.....Name of a Norse love goddess ....There is a more unfortunately named anglo saxon(I think) variant Frigga..

Friday ....like the French Vendredi from Venus (in Latin pantheanology)

So everyone Friday is the day for luurve.....when valentines day or the 13th fall on a Friday I guess its especially auspicious.....Perhaps one should visit the Cerne Abbas Giant on these dates.
                    • Re: middle names

The Cerne Abbas Giant is the rude chalk figure in Dorset....you know the one with an enormous club.
