Concrete graveyard: Jurassic 5 split

jurassic 5

Hip-hop collective Jurassic 5 have split after 14 years together.

Member, or ex-member, Soup revealed that the band will see out a tour of Australia and Japan before going their separate ways.

"After the tour, that's basically it," said Soup. "I don't want to sit here and fake around with it - we're not seeing eye to eye right now. People see us a harmonising, loving group, but that's far from the truth."

The infighting hinted at in Soup's statement has apparently been caused by one of the other member's desire to go solo.

"Some people here want their own shrine, their own thing. If that's what you want, I say more power to you. I hope it works out for you - just don't come up with lame excuses."

Yeah! Bothered? DiScuss...

  • to be honest...

...I don't think they've truely 'harmonised' either musically or as a band since Quality Control. All the albums since have sounded really detached, each member not really linking so well with the guy he followed...

I am kinda glad they split up, especially after Cut Chemist left I didn't really fancy their chances of coming up with anything as good as their early stuff. If it means more solo appearances, with the likes of DJ Format then all the better.

    • There's only been two albums since QC

but I agree. Nothing has quite lived up to 'Jayou' from the first LP, or the consistency and coherency of Quality Control.

They'll be missed though. Decent positive hip-hop is mega hard to come by. Well, and it still be good anyway.

      Ugly Duckling ahoy!

      • yeah,

when I put 'all' i was just being lazy. I know they've only had two since.

The Cut Chemist album has some high points too (generally it's really good)...and only today the 2na and Roots Manuva track came on my iPod, if them all breaking up means that there'll be more stuff like that then awesome.

i have never plucked up the couyrage to get anything from Ugly Duckling other than "Eye on the Gold Chain" (there's an awesoime Cut Chemist remix that samples Can)...is it good? which album should I go for?

  • "soem people want their own shrine"

if they're talking about chali 2na then he's right to want to pursue his own path, since he's the only rapper in j5 with any sort of charisma. the rest are so bland that they barely exist, and their lyrics/rhyming skills are pretty lame as well

    p.s. Dave Matthews

  • damn

thats a shame but yeah, they never quite followed up the first record properly. at least soup's been honest and said what he did as opposed to the obligatory 'oh we love each other and i'm sure we'll be bestest buddies forever'

  • Even though they'd been getting progressively worse

this still saddens me. When I saw them at Sheperds Bush last time they played there it was one of the best gigs I've ever been to. I've never seen an entire audience get so much into a show

    • It's a shame...

That such an up beat hip hop act has decided to go, their last release was a bit meh but still it's a shame.

  • Yeah!

would have been great if they could have tapped into the rich vein of form they had for the first two again and again, its not the case. Power in Numbers was pretty lame.

Rather this, and for them to forever be remembered for the good, rather than flogging a dead horse. Someone needs to tell the Chili Peppers this, oh shit, too late, shoulda done that ten years ago

    • .

Aside from one decent EP, they were shite.

      Won't be missed at all.

  • shit

    :(

    • I liked them very much.

Though the last time I said so with any enthusiasm, Raz bit my virtual nuts off so I'll stay muted this time. My virtual nuts fear the Raz.

      Shame, though.

  • Gutted

Not good news at all but like others have said this would have been much more of a blow a couple of albums ago. 'Feedback' is a bit boring overall although I did still like 'Power In Numbers'.

I'll be interested to hear the solo work.
