Whatever anyone thinks of the Magic Position
(especially the title track) it is nice to hear a musician who's actually happy to sound like he's quite happy with his life.

Wind in the Wires is a beautiful record, but The Magic Position sounds like new rave gone medieval. It's ridiculous, and it seems that there's a kind of emerging pattern between each album. It might just be progression, but it seems to be a very handy adaptation to what's cool at the time. In the first NME I ever bought, he was laying in a barn clutching a ukelele, with an afro of blonde hair. How things have changed.

The odd thing about this
is that this seems to be an attempt by Patrick or Loog to become a proper pop star by osmosis. Nobody's playlisted The Magic Position, the tone of the proper press about him hasn't changed, it's basically all "here's a great pop star, he's called Patrick Wolf! *pause* Go on, then, buy his records. *pause* Sorry, what?"

just get over your snobbery. The Magic Position is intentionally overblown and silly, it is supposed to evoke that sense of camp and sillyness which is contained in love. If everybody took the time to actually listen to the album, and read the lyrics, they would see that the album is a cycle of fallibg in and out of love, not all the songs sound like "The Magic Position"
This is such a ridiculous thread. So, he is on televsion. So he wants to be a pop star. What is srong with that. Did people say this to David Bowie as he rose through the mainstream. Yes, 14 year old girls now think Patrick is "well fit" and dance to his music at club NME, but he has still made three incredible stories that WILL stand the test of time.
He is a genius. He is what pop music should be. he is what a musician should be. It does not matter if people do not like him, but the reasons displayed in these 34 posts does little jusice to the supposed "elitism" of your musical tastes.

I don't find much magic in The Magic Position (irony!). I think that a lot of people on this thread object to this because it is something they didn't fall in love with his music for. He can do whatever he wants, not everone has to like it.
I think a LOT of people on here have definitely taken "the time to actually listen to the album, and read the lyrics", and have simply decided that they don't like it. I really really love his first two albums, he's totes my number 1 artist on lastdotfm and everything.
So liek, get over YOUR Patrick Wolf fanboyism. If an artist takes a major change in direction as he has done, it is inevitable that a lot of the fanbase will move. You have evidently stayed, and fair enough, but we don't all have identical tastes.

there is an interview from years back saying he intended to make an album of ukulele pop. Anyway loads of stuff on the album is still very dark and magical, Augustine, The Bluebells and The Stars most obviously.
It all smacks of people being precious of their little secret coming into the mainstream.
And Quite what is wrong with him making music that 14 year old girls like is a mystery to me. Surely an artist making music that is high quality and can appeal to a huge range of people is something to be admired rather than criticised...

In all honesty I just find the latest album to be joyless and frankly boring - from Overture its just one long downhill ride with nowhere near the depth or artistry that made Lycanthropy the magnificent album it is

It's probably the happiest album I own.
I really like his new album - it beats Wind in The Wires by quite a stretch(which I love, too).
I agree with Tristan, what's wrong with making something that everyone can like? Just be happy for the guy, whether you like his new one or not.
Although Lycanthropy is my favourite, I think he sort of improves at every new album ie. he gets more focused and grows a bit more, or something. It's hard to explain!

people are being very precious about his sound. He's between a rock and a hard place really - if he didn't alter his sound he'd be accused of doing the same old same old, and when he does it alienates the same people who would complain if he didn't change because it isn't to their liking.

I don't like this album, and I find that whenever I point it out people keep saying it's because I don't understand the new direction or whatever - I just don't like it.
Saying that, there are a couple of okay songs on the album

My personal favourite is Overture, I think it ranks as one of his best. It couldn't drop in quality more when the title track follows.

it is just that a lot of people here slate it for meaningless reasons. In my opinion it is his best album, becuase, as someone who has just had his life torn apart by heartbreack, it is the the most wonderful piece of art becasue it travels through this kaliedoscope of experiences associated with both love won and love lost.I understand why people don't like it, but i just think it has so many angles and directions that it seems impossible not to get anyting from it. Especially if you have ever loved. Truly.

anyway he's still great. seeing him at union chapel was fantastic, he still has those fantastic acoustic songs in him.
It really doesn't
work as an album. It has no 'nucleus'.
It starts off Ok I guess, but then falls apart completely -
I mean, Magpie is a slow dirgey track, but then thats emphasised by two minute long non-events, The Kiss and Secret Garden, which, for no reason at all, bookend the dreary blandathon of Augustine. Get lost and Enchanted are completely half-arsed, and by the time a glimmer of magic seeps through in 'The Stars' the albums over.
Compare the middle of this album with the middle of Lycanthropy, with Titans like don't say no, the childcatcher, ans paris carefully balanced with the beautifully haunting London, before plunging into Paris - wow.
here's hoping for a return to form with his fourth album

is a standout track for me! on stage he preceded it with 'Augustin', this wierd Eastern European folk jig. but it worked as a sister track to Augustine.
