is he? I have no idea who he is, other than some "scenester" in the first year of college who hangs around with a load of similarly oddly dressed people, and posts a lot around the "cool kids" pages of Myspace.
Wind in the Wires is a beautiful record, but The Magic Position sounds like new rave gone medieval. It's ridiculous, and it seems that there's a kind of emerging pattern between each album. It might just be progression, but it seems to be a very handy adaptation to what's cool at the time. In the first NME I ever bought, he was laying in a barn clutching a ukelele, with an afro of blonde hair. How things have changed.
'LEAVE THE GUY ALONE. CHRIST, He's having FUN. IS THAT SUCH A CRIME?'
Well, yes it is actually. If Jake Shears or MIKA was doing the same thing, you'd be sobbing your hearts out in anger. He made a good album. So did Status Quo. They're still a disease that must be cured.
but that makes me sad, the first couple of times i saw him it was magical, i can imagine that going to see him now would involve being surrounded by 15 year old girls with pink hair and topshop dresses who used to be emo but have just discovered CSS, with patrick prancing around on stage looking like a twat and trying too hard to be Fey. bleh.
all the "cool", post-emo scenester kids round here LOVE Patrick Wolf, after slating his first two albums for being "boring". Next up: Patrick models for Topman. I can see it now.
is that this seems to be an attempt by Patrick or Loog to become a proper pop star by osmosis. Nobody's playlisted The Magic Position, the tone of the proper press about him hasn't changed, it's basically all "here's a great pop star, he's called Patrick Wolf! *pause* Go on, then, buy his records. *pause* Sorry, what?"
just get over your snobbery. The Magic Position is intentionally overblown and silly, it is supposed to evoke that sense of camp and sillyness which is contained in love. If everybody took the time to actually listen to the album, and read the lyrics, they would see that the album is a cycle of fallibg in and out of love, not all the songs sound like "The Magic Position"
This is such a ridiculous thread. So, he is on televsion. So he wants to be a pop star. What is srong with that. Did people say this to David Bowie as he rose through the mainstream. Yes, 14 year old girls now think Patrick is "well fit" and dance to his music at club NME, but he has still made three incredible stories that WILL stand the test of time.
He is a genius. He is what pop music should be. he is what a musician should be. It does not matter if people do not like him, but the reasons displayed in these 34 posts does little jusice to the supposed "elitism" of your musical tastes.
It is quite patheitc actually. Maybe people should get over it a bit. Prehaps.
but we're still allowed not to like it. It's not all 'snobbery', although i know my posts above were (in a slightly tongue in cheek way)
I don't find much magic in The Magic Position (irony!). I think that a lot of people on this thread object to this because it is something they didn't fall in love with his music for. He can do whatever he wants, not everone has to like it.
I think a LOT of people on here have definitely taken "the time to actually listen to the album, and read the lyrics", and have simply decided that they don't like it. I really really love his first two albums, he's totes my number 1 artist on lastdotfm and everything.
So liek, get over YOUR Patrick Wolf fanboyism. If an artist takes a major change in direction as he has done, it is inevitable that a lot of the fanbase will move. You have evidently stayed, and fair enough, but we don't all have identical tastes.
there is an interview from years back saying he intended to make an album of ukulele pop. Anyway loads of stuff on the album is still very dark and magical, Augustine, The Bluebells and The Stars most obviously.
It all smacks of people being precious of their little secret coming into the mainstream.
And Quite what is wrong with him making music that 14 year old girls like is a mystery to me. Surely an artist making music that is high quality and can appeal to a huge range of people is something to be admired rather than criticised...
wouldn't even mind if it WAS overblow and campy - as long as he kept the tunes I'd be happy
In all honesty I just find the latest album to be joyless and frankly boring - from Overture its just one long downhill ride with nowhere near the depth or artistry that made Lycanthropy the magnificent album it is
I really like his new album - it beats Wind in The Wires by quite a stretch(which I love, too).
I agree with Tristan, what's wrong with making something that everyone can like? Just be happy for the guy, whether you like his new one or not.
Although Lycanthropy is my favourite, I think he sort of improves at every new album ie. he gets more focused and grows a bit more, or something. It's hard to explain!
people are being very precious about his sound. He's between a rock and a hard place really - if he didn't alter his sound he'd be accused of doing the same old same old, and when he does it alienates the same people who would complain if he didn't change because it isn't to their liking.
I don't like this album, and I find that whenever I point it out people keep saying it's because I don't understand the new direction or whatever - I just don't like it.
Saying that, there are a couple of okay songs on the album
it is just that a lot of people here slate it for meaningless reasons. In my opinion it is his best album, becuase, as someone who has just had his life torn apart by heartbreack, it is the the most wonderful piece of art becasue it travels through this kaliedoscope of experiences associated with both love won and love lost.I understand why people don't like it, but i just think it has so many angles and directions that it seems impossible not to get anyting from it. Especially if you have ever loved. Truly.
It starts off Ok I guess, but then falls apart completely -
I mean, Magpie is a slow dirgey track, but then thats emphasised by two minute long non-events, The Kiss and Secret Garden, which, for no reason at all, bookend the dreary blandathon of Augustine. Get lost and Enchanted are completely half-arsed, and by the time a glimmer of magic seeps through in 'The Stars' the albums over.
Compare the middle of this album with the middle of Lycanthropy, with Titans like don't say no, the childcatcher, ans paris carefully balanced with the beautifully haunting London, before plunging into Paris - wow.
here's hoping for a return to form with his fourth album
is a standout track for me! on stage he preceded it with 'Augustin', this wierd Eastern European folk jig. but it worked as a sister track to Augustine.
I'm supposed to be going to see him soon and I think I'm still the only person in the country who doesn't really know who he is. I bought his new album out of curiosity but haven't really made the effort to play it... should I?
I just bunged it on the iPod so I guess it's pretty much down to chance whether I hear it or not. Got a lot of travelling to do over the next few weeks and 5000 songs on shuffle, might come across it at some point.
was it awful?
i can only imagine it being truly shit
.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsWikoIMWWw
oh patrick.
thats dreadful.
trippy
i saw a boy dressed up as patrick wolf in newquay on friday, orange hair, crayola coloured clothes, the works. He was quite astounding.
was he as tall?
nowhere near
hang on, i will find him on myspace:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=22985340
Alas, he's not dressed as the Wolf in his Myspace pictures, but he was on Friday, honest gov.
oh i know him
he's a member of The Fucknuts
eh?
is he? I have no idea who he is, other than some "scenester" in the first year of college who hangs around with a load of similarly oddly dressed people, and posts a lot around the "cool kids" pages of Myspace.
yup
he's pretty important to the whole Fucknuts sound
unless you're taking the piss
you must be thinking of another person.
nah
pretty sure he's a Fucknut
Why anyone would want to
dress up as someone else is a mystery to me. Especially when they look as horrible as Patrick Wolf.
i'd much rather do him than you
patrick wolf
is a rather good example of how to look very attractive yet have a fittingly good style.
again, moron.
I've said it before and I'll say it again
Charlotte Church cannot sing. On any level. And it hurts. :-(
and
they added a bassline to When Doves Cry
cunts
When she sings she dances like
a 13 year-old impersonating Shirley Bassey at a school disco. It looks really shit.
anyone
remember when patrick wolf was good?
i have a vague
memory of that...i think...
I think he still is
Whatever anyone thinks of the Magic Position
(especially the title track) it is nice to hear a musician who's actually happy to sound like he's quite happy with his life.
i like the magic position (the song)
but i'm not sure i'd listen to it enough to justify buying the record
I do

!
That was the first NME *I* ever bought!
he's been on telly
ALL weekend. On absolutely everything. Every time I've turned it on he's been there.
He's
on Emmerdale Farm tonight
that was horrible
-
yeesh. Patrick doesn't duet well with anyone particularly, I really don't like Beautiful Boyz by Cocorosie with him on it.
That wasn't him
It was Antony Hegarty
jesus fucking christ
:(
What a vile person.
How John Brainlove et al. ejaculate onto him so often escapes me.
Farewell Patrick
Ill miss you.
Cue
one of his faithful fans to come in and say:
'LEAVE THE GUY ALONE. CHRIST, He's having FUN. IS THAT SUCH A CRIME?'
Well, yes it is actually. If Jake Shears or MIKA was doing the same thing, you'd be sobbing your hearts out in anger. He made a good album. So did Status Quo. They're still a disease that must be cured.
this is horrible, i agree
but that makes me sad, the first couple of times i saw him it was magical, i can imagine that going to see him now would involve being surrounded by 15 year old girls with pink hair and topshop dresses who used to be emo but have just discovered CSS, with patrick prancing around on stage looking like a twat and trying too hard to be Fey. bleh.
</elitist snob>
You're right.
He was at the Academy whilst I was watching another gig there, and the vast majority of his fans were little girls.

It was certainly a mistake
but I still think he's good. Ho hum
great performance.
the wolf (L)
Everybody is so wrong...

it's spelt 'like'
liek
watevs
it isn't a major change in direction i don't think
there is an interview from years back saying he intended to make an album of ukulele pop. Anyway loads of stuff on the album is still very dark and magical, Augustine, The Bluebells and The Stars most obviously.

I think it's nothing but joy!
It's probably the happiest album I own.
I really like his new album - it beats Wind in The Wires by quite a stretch(which I love, too).

yeah
people are being very precious about his sound. He's between a rock and a hard place really - if he didn't alter his sound he'd be accused of doing the same old same old, and when he does it alienates the same people who would complain if he didn't change because it isn't to their liking.

Saying that, there are a couple of okay songs on the album
that's true, there are
and i LOVE The Stars, but...it just seems like a bit of a shambles as an album, really
Yeah, me too.
My personal favourite is Overture, I think it ranks as one of his best. It couldn't drop in quality more when the title track follows.
I agree with you completely...
it is just that a lot of people here slate it for meaningless reasons. .
i think that patrick wolf is a steaming pile of horse gash
not snobbery. an opinion
Patrick, oh Patrick.
What the fuck?
it's pretty bad...
i didn't anticipate just how bad it would be, though.
yikes.
anyway he's still great. seeing him at union chapel was fantastic, he still has those fantastic acoustic songs in him.
It really doesn't
work as an album. It has no 'nucleus'.
It starts off Ok I guess, but then falls apart completely -
I mean, Magpie is a slow dirgey track, but then thats emphasised by two minute long non-events, The Kiss and Secret Garden, which, for no reason at all, bookend the dreary blandathon of Augustine. oh
i realise i've mentioned paris twice in the above post, but you get the picture
Augustine is gorgeous
That's actually exactly what I think about it
I was so hopeful it'd be amazing after the first track. But that's so not the case...
love the album...
but that 'collaboration' makes me sad :(
Augustine
is a standout track for me! on stage he preceded it with 'Augustin', this wierd Eastern European folk jig. but it worked as a sister track to Augustine.
To that guy who said his album was amazing:
I havn't heard it.
But rule one of being a credible artist is: DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, GO ON THE CHARLOTTE CHURCH SHOW.
I'v never liked him
But 'The Magic Position' (song) is so magical I might just have to investigate further. Recommendation's plz? kthxbi
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
when was he ever good?
Lycanthropy is brilliant.
I haven't heard the new one.
^
basically.
The new one kind of blows.
Lycanthropy was dusted in magic that seems kind of absent ever since.
Lycanthropy
and Wind In The Wires
both wonderful.
oh charlotte :(
It happened.
:(
...
I'm supposed to be going to see him soon and I think I'm still the only person in the country who doesn't really know who he is. I bought his new album out of curiosity but haven't really made the effort to play it... should I?
Nah
Don't bother.
^
Ah well
I just bunged it on the iPod so I guess it's pretty much down to chance whether I hear it or not. Got a lot of travelling to do over the next few weeks and 5000 songs on shuffle, might come across it at some point.
