Someone stated on a previous post (Sorry, forgotton who it was, im tired now & cant be arsed to go back to check) that Canadians are not the best at music making.

Try and name some decent bands from the maple leaf land...

I'll start with
Death From Above 1979

Apostle Of Hustle.

Stars.

Are A Silver Mt. Zion Canadian? I think so, but i'm not sure.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Yeah they're part of GYBE. Montreal. Those people have a shitload of earnest side-projects

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Celine Dion.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

The Stills
Hot Hot Heat
are The Unicorns canadian?

Re: Good Canadian Bands

unicorns are kaput. try wintersleep and kary (one and the same).

Re: Good Canadian Bands

God Speed You Black Emperor are Canadian, and therefore so are Silver Mt. Zion.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

The Arcade Fire

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Definitely The Stills and Broken Social Scene.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Have to say Canada is about as hot as it gets for new bands at the moment. The Arcade Fire, Manitoba, Godspeed, Do Make Say Think, Showroom, the Unicorns, the Stills etc etc
not forgetting Adams and Glass Tiger......

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Caribou, not Manitoba.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

It says Manitoba on the 'Up In Flames' album I have by them so that's good enough for me.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

he's changed his name...

Re:

Peaches / Gonzales

Re: Re:

I thought Gonzales was an American Jew that lived in Berlin?
Anyway - Broken Social Scene, the Arcade Fire, the Unicorns & the New Pornographers are all canadian i believe & all brilliant.

Don't forget Rush either.....

Re: Re:

Some classics in Neil Young, Leonard Cohen etc

Constantines.

Re:

No, he's a Canadian Jew who lives in Berlin.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

bryan adams

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Re: Good Canadian Bands

No, no, and furthermore, no.

Matthew Good/Matthew Good Band
Our Lady Peace (early stuff)
The Dears
Sam Roberts
Billy Talent
Rush

....to name but a few

Probably missed some, too.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

www.cstrecords.com

not a bad band to be found.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

I didn't realise Billy Talent were Canadian, I'd always assumed that they were American.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Nope. As Canadian as maple syrup. Which is about as Canadian as you can get.

Booyah.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

barenaked ladies, hot hot heat, auf der maur and i realise i will get stick for this last one but...sum41 - they really are a good band!

Re: Good Canadian Bands

broken social scene (you forgot it in people is fantastic)
the arcade fire

Re: Good Canadian Bands

no bad bands to be found on cst?
i have a pretty eclectic taste but even i admit, Re: and Polmo Polpo are tuneless shit

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Tuneless? Yes. Shit? No.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

I can't believe no-one has mentioned Sloan or Eric's Trip.
Jesus, I feel so old...

Re: Good Canadian Bands

I own one single by each of the aforementioned bands, Teepee. Feel old no longer, let us sing 'Underwhelmed' by Sloan together until the night draws in...

Re: Good Canadian Bands

(In a croaky voice)

Great single...

(Hobbles towards the television room)

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Someone already mentioned them I think, but Stars are brilliant. I believe that they are in Broken Social Scene also or something but not quite sure how it works.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

The majority of the Constellation roster are Canadian. My personal favs are

GY!BE
A Silver Mt. Zion
Do Make Say Think

All fucking incredible.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Daniel Bejar aka DESTROYER is Vancouver-based.
Don't know if he's canadian but his music is great.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

I forgot The Amber Room - I kinda know them too (erm albeit vaguely but... )

www.theamberroom.org

Re: Good Canadian Bands

i agree, all you need do is mention constellation on this thread and it should end there. you can order anything from their catalogue and be more pleased than you've ever been before, everytime.

Re: Good Canadian Bands

Hmm, it might have been me on the Feist street teamer thread making comments about the Juno awards being a big load of shite... however Canada does have a shitload of good music.

Recommendations:

The Old Soul (definitely influenced by pre-Satellite Heart era Flaming Lips, lots of odd instruments and harmonies, the album's probably bloody impossible to get in England but it's well worth it, the website for them is www.theoldsoul.com

C'mon - Ian Blurton's latest band. Class!
