Diastole: Gandhi Goes To Hollywood
Something odd has been put into the Suffolk water system as Blue Gandhi are yet another Band From Bury. They are yet another band with the potential to make people wet themselves with joy (though I do hope they don’t. Wet themselves that is. Shall we move swiftly on? Good good.).
First track Oblivious opens with the sound of Chompy the Rhino Head er...chomping [cheers Clairey! - RA] and continues with a fast paced funky guitar riff that makes a welcome change from the oodles of lo-fi introspective singer songwriters, nascent rap-rock bands, and people who look no further than a 4/4 beat. Add to that vocals that vary from a neer sneer to a rasp to jumping up and down an octave like a teenage boy’s voice breaking and this is a very good start indeed.
We move on to Affectionate Hands. The skittish guitars are replaced by a drone and Ellie Langley deadpans about small town life and a dead end future in living in the suburbs with a husband as a housewife.
The third track on this four track demo, Good Time, has a darker feel to it and it sounds as though Blue Gandhi have taken a time machine back to 1993 and gone grunge. Just without all the bloody shouting involved as Ellie’s vocals go into maudlin mode, the bitterness is tangible and they manage to summon up more scorn by being evenly paced than if she was screaming blue murder. This song seems to go hand in hand with their last song Optimist which, is equally dark with vocals that go from being a hoarse rasp to soaring up an octave and going smooth to illustrate the two personas in the song.
Blue Gandhi are already better than many bands that are 5 years older than them or more. Fuck moderation: go get!!
Demos are available at gigs and through Blue Gandhi's website

Blue Gandhi - Gandhi Goes To Hollywood
Can I just say - its not clip clopping coconuts - thats chompy at the beginning. A rhino head thing - you know - you pull the handle and the head goes up. Honestly...
I didn't know the song was about a house husband (affectionate hands that is), I always thought it was the typical woman housewife, you know "drive my kids to school, I'll never be unhappy and i'll never break the mould"
Have to say - they are really a live act - the cd doesn't do them justice. You have to see these people live......
DO IT-
Re: Blue Gandhi - Gandhi Goes To Hollywood
Thanks Clairey for the info on Chompy....one thing that's always bothered me about coconut hooves though is who on earth would eat a coconut just to be able to pretend to be a horse?
er...I did say that it was about the life of a typical housewife! Ok fair enough the line "living in the suburbs with a husband as a houswife" can be read both ways.
love

oh opps. Silly me. I'll get shouted at for getting that wrong. My fault, I'm the only one who hasn't actually got the demo, although have seen them ummm... about 15 times live.
Well the whole being 1000000 times better on stage still stands.

Blue Gandhi - Gandhi Goes To Hollywood
Wow! I bought a copy of their cd at baby barbeque since being blown away during their slot that afternoon and it rocks the socks of everything else I heard that day.
I love the mixed sound of Blue Gandhi; it's brilliant yet original in the sense that the vocals are aggressive yet melodic, the guitars urgent and furious or mellow and heavenly while the rhythm section is pounding funk jazz. Something for everyone judging by their live set - Just one question: how come I never see Blue Gandhi in cambridge?

Blue Gandhi in Cambridge
They're supporting Miss Black America at the Cambridge Boat Race on the 22nd September, at an Anti Nazi League gig organised by R*E*P*E*A*T Records. And hopefully after that as much as is possible, because they're the best band in the world.-
Re: Blue Gandhi in Cambridge
I've heard one track amongst the MBA peel session that I taped (hello mr.prs!) and it did rather rock. Sound like a live band. The recording sounded like a mike dangly in the middle of a garage, might of been my radio :)
Sean
ps. how'd'you make such a big noise with a cock in your mouth?
pps. thank you for the cd's seymour... dunoo it's cus of my longpigs obsession but 'Scream for Me' reminds me of them, not in a bad way at all :)

Blue Gandhi - Gandhi Goes To Hollywood
It's true, Blue Gandhi are quite awesome. I think the recording on the CD is quite raw. They are better live - the bass drum is mysteriously absent - but the CD gives you an indication of how good the songwriting is. Go and buy the CD, if only because I reckon it could be worth big dollar in a couple of years.-
Crikey Bob.....
.....you've been giving the big-up to Blue Gandhi so much over the last couple of weeks, I think that you should ask them for a job.-
Fully deserved!
They goddam rule! I'm very impressed! I thought I had a job though. Have I got the boot already?
