Me! I think they r sooo overrated. Wow, a couple of catchy indie songs n u lot r all pissing urselves about em. They are just another band who are ok, but because somebody says they are "intellignet art rock" u lot all love em.
thats why
i'm no huge fan, but i aint really heard that much of their stuff. they just aren't very intersting in my opinion and the singer's voice is irritating. I'll still give the album a chance mind...
Loads of people here actively hate them, there was a thread on this in Rumours I think. I think they're alright, overrated but I don't see what's so bad about them that deserves all the hate.
I don't like them. They bore me.
But I would rather see Bloc Party at the top of the hit parade than a pete waterman project, obviously. I have no major grudge against this band, I'm just not a fan of their music personally.
I quite like the singles, but the fact that everyone thinks they're the best thing ever, when they're only mildly good, makes me want to hate them. I think if they were allowed to develop naturally, without stupid hype around them, they would have passed under most people's radars with this album, and then "burst onto the scene", as they say, with a really great second album. Similar story with Razorlight; bands need to develop before every talks about like they're the new Beatles.
So in short, I'm not one of the people who worship the ground Bloc Party walk on. And what's with that Bloc Head thing - isn't it just an emo-cut?
It's not only the hype that makes you dislike them, they just aren't very good! At first i really liked them but now they have got boring and a good band will be good forever, if they get boring after hearing their songs like twice they can not be a very good overall band.
I dont like them they are boring and they have no energy on stage, like at the nme amards they just stood there. there album is also the most uninteresting thing i have ever heard
The album is pretty good, it's not a classic but there's some definite potential for expansion of their music. I'm not much into the whole angular jerky guitar stuff going about right now but Bloc Party do it better than many. One has to wonder how much hype they'll get if they ever release a truly classic album...
am sure youre waiting for my input - well I looked at a picture of them the other day and only regretted giving up the fags as I could have burned their faces with the glowing ember of a cig whilst muttering curses on their pointless souls
Agreed (resisting the kind-of backlash here). I was surprised at their performance at the NME awards, the lack of movement (and lack of a half naked matt) certainly wasn't there when i saw them in october...
Saw them 3 times, admitedly ages ago, last summer when the first angular compilation came out. (by the way is it just me who's going to scream the next time I read some lazy wanker music journalist use the word angular to describe guitars?) They bored me silly each time, absolutely NO stage presence and not much in the way of tunes. Still Helicopters was very good. but it's all they've got. VERY nice people though.
as you can see by my name i aint much of a fan, simply to do with them being woeful live. I was at the NME awards gig in newcastle this year they followed the kaisers and were before the futureheads. They are dreadful live. They sound ok on their singles but thats it really. The expectations were so high before the gig, from me too. However most people were bored by the singers obsessive shouting at the microphone. It them i feel sorry for with all this hype they will not live up to.
they sounded ok from the bar downstairs at that newcastle gig ... plus they were very very good live here at bulletproof in october/november (?) on the helicopter tour.
i think theyre overhyped ... but also i think that underneath the hype is a really good band with some good songs...unlike many of last years most hyped and pimped bands
why the hell is there so much debate surrounding bloc party on this site?? and the talk of them being overhyped is simply unnecessary. if we can forget media hype and just listen to the songs, maybe we can all form better opinions. Personally though in my opinion, I think that not only are bloc party a talented and hard-working group of musicians...but also an incredibly important one, that define the premises of modern popular rock'n'roll. they'll be looked upon after 20 years with approving nods...
That's one way of looking at it. Another might be that as the hype-smoke clears, and people are left with their actual music instead of swollen hyperbole, the debate is more informed.
i dont have the album yet ... but the radio session tracks iv got still sound as fresh and clear as when i first heard them based on my housemates recommendation (not nme/dis/mtv2 hype).
i think these guys will be remembered as one of the better bands of this generation of indie acts.
When i first read about them on Dis a long time ago, i thought they ight be intersting.
Then i listen to some songs : average music, awful voice.
I don't hate them, good for them to have make it.
His voice is poor. It has no charisma and the accent he sings in really grates. The way he sings 'bravado' on one of the tracks is a really annoying.
The album is pretty good though but they're certainly not worth all of the hype. I think Sean needs to calm down. That piece that he wrote about how you HAVE to buy the album made me feel a bit queasy.
I'm still undecided, I hear them on the radio, I see them on MTV.
Their okay, but not my cup of tea - and one of them looks so smug.
Natty dreads though!
GRRR - So what about the hype their album is really really good - this is a unique type of music which is catching on. Fuck you all the people who say their shit just because you don't want to admit to liking mainstream music because you think its cool. The fact of the matter is - silent alarm is one brilliant album and they are brilliant live as well.
I do quite like them, not exactly genius but not poor either. 'Like Eating Glass' and 'Helicopter' are pretty good tunes. The one thing that they do have going for them more so than many bands is a brilliant drummer.
Dammit, you caught me. My facade has been seen right through. I proclaim to not like them, when it is in fact a medically proven fact that you can't not like them. I was a fool to even try.......
I hope that this doesn't upset you too much, but I'm going to have to say it. I don't think their album is brilliant. I like other styles of music, really. Probably musical styles that you don't like. I'm fine with that. I think the balance of probability is that there are others like me that don't think this is one brilliant album. You'll walk past them in the street, it may even be a friend of yours. Embrace them. Acknowledge their right to think what they want be it good or bad, and carry on about your business
having seen this awful 'band' on the nme tour, i feel compelled to let the world know had truly diabolic they are. it just goes to show that even the worst, most intolerable racket, can succeed if it is given such a massive amount of hype by the gutter press.
but i feel as if i must thank the nme for their efforts in convincing the 'sheep' that this collection of noise makers is the best thing since sliced bread.
Oh come on, at least recognise that they're not shit. This whole backlash was so predictable but I didn't think it would occur so quickly and to such a large extent. Why don't you reserve your hatred for the likes of the Others and the Bravery? Bloc Party are obviously talented, regadless of hype or overexposure.

pretty simple really.
