I have seen him solo at the Union Chapel in 2001, as part of Rough Trade's 25th Anniversary gigs. From what I remember it was goosebumps all the way through, everything acoustic, and that night he made a much bigger impression on me than when I saw him with AMC in 2004, even though the venue (Islington Shopping Centre Academy) that night did not help.
I recommend everyone to check out him live. Solo, his songs are utterly beautiful, and with a band, there is oodles of great vibey gospel/blues sounds PLUS he's a funny bastard.
I can never understand why press about him describes him as melancholy and downbeat etc...that is only a small part of what he does.
though he was looking worringly like Scroobius Pip's dad or something.
The new songs sounded awesome and he seemed in good spirits, joking with the crowd who were brilliant and didn't utter a word all night for a change. Even did an (what I think was unplanned) encore.
