the concept of a 'rock' band without guitars is an interesting one. it's a pity that Keane execute it so poorly. The piano work is utter basic drivel and the vocals are so bad that it is painful.
Unfortunately you're proably right about them being the band remembered for 2004.

Come on, that's just a gimmick. All it does is limits their musical capablities. Also gives them a chance to sell more of their second album than they would otherwise have done by claiming to have gone in a new direction with the use of guitars.

I personally think, in 10-20 years time, Franz will be the band people will remember from 2004. They have almost single-handedly inspired a whole new scene. Keane have had almost no influence from a musical point of view.

the fact that they have succeeded in the way they have without a guitar, and that no other band has been able to copy this act successfully is testament to what a genious Tom C is as a songwriter and general musician. Franz will be remembered for originality and opening new doors for other musicians. Keane will be remembered for making very very good popular music open to a wide audience.

Tom Chaplin doesn't write their songs.
And they're not exactly opening new doors, I played in a band for about 2 months without a guitarist and it just sounded bare (this was before Keane 'came out'). It's not that people haven't thought of the idea before, it's just difficult to pull off and incredibly limiting, and I don't think Keane are particularly good at it.

whats worse is that they have bass guitar on practically all their records. its not like they have chosen on principle to get the most out of vox/piano/drums.

Um, how are they geniuses for THAT. I know plenty of bands who don't use a guitar and sound brilliant.

Also, I think you'll find that every song, even live, is backed with a TON of backing instruments. Look at any live performance and the pianist has a fucking laptop with at least 10 tracks of extra music running along it.

i expect the reason Keane get shit on this forum is because this forum is home to a high percentage of proactive gig-going music fans who can see a band as good as Keane every week at their local toilet. it's not that Keane are shit, it's that many understandably can't see why they 'made it' when hard-working band x don't. in other words, their success is suspect, and smacks of boardroom efficiency... which just ain't very rock n roll.

personally, i think some of there tunes are okay, if a little 'beginners piano', but there's no real spark there- they're 'crafted' in the most prosaic, workmanlike sense of the word. frankly they bore me.

Hang on, Keane spent years 'struggling' on the toilet circuit too, i heard they once used to be supported by Coldplay in such venues...i don't think people are bitter about it, but i don't really see why, in this case, they should be...i think it's more due to over-exposure. They may not be the most innovative band ever but if you look at it purely through the songs rather than the hype then i'd say they're alright really...i think 'Everybody's Changing' is an ace tune, if a little over-produced the second time around. A couple of years ago a lot of the indie fraternity who now berate them (hello The Fly, NME etc.) thought they had quite a nack with the ol' pop song.

i wouldn't really call myself a devout fan, but for being so darn unfashionable and becoming a hit seems in this case to be quite an achievement.

I'd argue that spending YEARS on the toilet circuit and suddenly getting big isn't that much of an achievement. If you're THAT good the FANS (and fans to be) bring you to bigger and bigger venues fast.

of course they do something; They get their chubby faces plastered everywhere. It's a bit scary how I've probably heard their songs quite a few times, yet seem to be unable to actually remember any of the words.

Personally I was just browsing the forum, replying to pretty much everything, and well, this thread was just 'there'. Keane are a bit boring though, don't you think?

Opinion swayed? Nope. What happened was that a combination of several things - overproduced first album, seeing that film of theirs that showed them to be ... well, a bit dull, overserious second record, embarrassing stage banter - I quite like them now and really should have put them back on my profile with a 7 or an 8. But when they first came out, what they were doing seemed very brave and against the tide of what was deemed 'in vogue'. Nobody had a word against them when "Everybody's Changing" first appeared...

Well remembered, incidentally. But no, I would never change my ratings as a result of anything said here or anywhere. My profile is hardly a 'hotlist' of cool...
