i'm looking for an overdrive/distortion pedal. is there any difference between the two and can i have some recommendations please. technical speak is wasted on me.
unless theyre in the power stage, there aint much point in tubes.
i have two pro-co rats. theyre very, very nice. at low gain and with the filter quite high its a nice crunchy overdrive. at high gain with the filter down you can get crazy noise. i just bought a danelectro fabtone off ebay too, to get even crazier saturated noise.
overdrive is meant to be more like the sound of all tube amps at loud volumes, that natural singiness and crunchiness they get. distortion is a more abrasive, almost clipping sort of sound.
basically, overdrive is crunchy, fuzz is fuzzy and distortion is somewhere in between: a good distortion can crunch and chugg on low strings but sing on higher ones, always keeping definition. thats how i think is best to think of it.
but yeah. i think a rat is a very, very good choice, and theyre cheap on ebay too (dont worry about getting them second hand, theyre pretty much impossible to destroy). i got mine for about 40 quid for the pair. admittedly, that was a lucky deal, but you can probably get one for 30/40 quid if you look hard enough and are patient.
but yeah, as chris said, if you have a tube amp, you probably wont be able to beat cranking that for overdrive. if its too loud, get an attenuator.
A Fender Blues Deluxe amp on clean with the drive up quite high, and then the overdrive channel on that for a kick.
I also have a Digitech Distortion Factory on high output which I mainly use on the tubescreamer setting for the really loud bits. Has seven different sound settings - good for recording, and also playing live if you have another option.
I'm going to add a Digitech Hot Rod as well once I get myself sorted.
which is overdrive and distortion in one pedal. i quite like it. it allows you to mix the two. i don't know too much about these technical things though. i just whack it on and try and make it sound good
Overdrive sounds more "natural"
sort of crunchy
distortion sounds more... distorted.
get a bos ds-2 for distortion
get something with tubes in it for overdrive
dont bother.

incidentally, that reminds me.
depending on how much i like my fabtone and how much i need my second rat, i may be selling it. believe.
im really not cure
but i think a distortion pedal makes a less "natural" sound. if you have a half decent amp, you should use its own settings/pedals for overdrive
or something
close.
