Re: best albums of 2005

Depends on whether Mark Linkous releases something this year... that said I havnt heard the great destroyer properly yet...am loving a lifetime of temporary relief mind you.

Fav new album i own so far's prob stero total's 'do the bambi' need some money to get the great destroyer tho.

Re: best albums of 2005

I love Sparklehorse, it really is time for a new album. Have you heard their collaboration with the Flaming Lips on the Daniel Johnston tribute album?

Albums this year: I can't imagine the forthcoming Magnolia Electric Co. album being anything short of stunning.

Re: best albums of 2005

Unfortunately not, that 2 disc set does look good tho' been listening to some early daniel johnston recently mind... I did hear a few new songs live back in july 03, one called sunshine 2, which was stunning. given that he was talking about new recording techniques and how he's managed to make instruments sound like theyre on fire, i'm very optimistic...

still not heard any magnolia electric co. What are they like?

new Caribou/manitoba should be spec. I'd imagine

Re: best albums of 2005

Instruments on fire, i like the sound of that already. I cheated and just downloaded the song from the Daniel Johnston tribute on Soulseek. It really is great though hearing Linkous and Wayne Coyne crooning along together.

Magnolia Electric Co evolved out of Songs: Ohia - both are pretty much all about singer/songwriter Jason Molina though. Songs: Ohia were more lo-fi and folky, often compared to Will Oldham. MEC are generally a lot more upbeat and countrified, often compared to Neil Young. Mp3s here.

Hmm, i don't think this board likes more than one html link per post.

So go here : http://www.epitonic.com/artists/songsohia.html

Re: best albums of 2005

For me the Great destroyer is a big disappointment.
And i'm an ld Low fan.

Album of the year so far :
Eastern Lane - The article or
Magnolia Electric Co - Trials & errors.

Re: best albums of 2005

even though it came out last year in America, i'd say so far the Arcade Fire record is pretty high...busy at the mo so haven't had a chance to listen to frances the mute yet...actually i have to say that Funeral probably is the record i've enjoyed most of stuff thats come out this year, as a lot of things have been a slight let down (trail of dead, kaada/patton)

Re: best albums of 2005

Have heard rough mixes of Million Dead's new album - it will slay all - FACT

Re: best albums of 2005

so far:

M.I.A - Arular
Daft Punk - Human After All
Low - The Great Destroyer
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

Re: best albums of 2005

Looking forward to the new million dead, any change in style after Cameron leaving??

As for this massively premature 2005 thing, so far it's Frances the Mute.

Re: best albums of 2005

Oasis.

>_>

<_<

Re: best albums of 2005

It's bigger and better than everything i've heard for some time (i.e since 'Panopticon') - think early 90's American Metal - Soundgarden, Pumpkins, all washed down with Black Flag

*Shudders*

Re: best albums of 2005

Sounds.....interesting

Re: best albums of 2005

So... nothing like million dead then???

Re: best albums of 2005

I'd rather they did something totally different than release A Song To Ruin again. As long as its as good.

Re: best albums of 2005

I think people have got the wrong end of the stick here - the Soundgarden/pumpkins reference is to the production -i.e- huge - guitars the size of planets - musically, it's just like MD, but approximately a squillion times better.

Re: best albums of 2005

I've been reading about choirs too. I really hope that works. So many a decent band have been ruined by over-slick production. I'll have to trust your judgement for now.

Re: best albums of 2005

bloc party's silent alarm or trail of dead's worlds apart. probably just pipped at the post by trail of dead i think.

xxx

Re: best albums of 2005

Bloc Party's debut is definately a must buy, and probably Trail's new one too, but I havent gotten round to checking it out yet. :(

Re: best albums of 2005

Redjetson - New General Catalogue

It really is pretty special

Re: best albums of 2005

Although I've only bought three albums that have been released this year, I would have to agree. It'll take something special to top it.

Re: best albums of 2005

havent got it yet, but i have full trust that Youre a Woman, I'm A Machine will be one of my most played.

Re: best albums of 2005

tis great - that and the black keys have been played to death by me.

Re: best albums of 2005

Patrick Wolf - Wind In The Wires
DFA 1979 - You're a Woman, I'm a Machine
Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

Re: best albums of 2005

Bright Eyes' I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning was another good one

Re: best albums of 2005

The Arcade Fire. Released this year in this country anyway, so it counts.

Re: best albums of 2005

Silent Alarm most certainly. Also looking forward to the Kaiser Chiefs's album!

Re: best albums of 2005

I'm looking forward to the new (rumoured) Built to Spill, Broken Social Scene, Silver Jews.....also looking forward to new Stephen Malkmus....so far been enjoying buying old records rather than new.....and E.P. by Fiery Furnaces (although that is old stuff)......Silent Alarm...s'ok.....Arcade Fire....brilliant....last year though but technically this year here so guess it counts.....

Re: best albums of 2005

a healthy distrust by sage francis is one of the best hip-hop albums i've heard in ages.

Re: best albums of 2005

yeah, tis great.

Re: best albums of 2005

also getting weird chills thinking how ace the new SOAD albums must be, based on 'Cigaro'

*rubs hands with glee waiting for the opportunity to go ape*

Re: best albums of 2005

McFly's second definately.

Re: best albums of 2005

The new QOTSA is good, slightly strange

Re: best albums of 2005

When's the arcade fire album out?

Re: best albums of 2005

early march i think

Re: best albums of 2005

I believe it's tommorrow ;-)

Re: best albums of 2005

So no-one nominates Frances the Mute?

It's progtastic.

Re: best albums of 2005

Im thinking that Daft Punk's Human After All will be pretty damn good, but having not heard that I'd say The Doves - Some Cities or Bloc Party - Silent Alarm

Re: best albums of 2005

encore-eminemn

Re: best albums of 2005

2004 album.

Re: best albums of 2005

Ahh, lay off him, he's only a wee baby

He'll learn.

Re: best albums of 2005

Silent Alarm will win all the end of year polls.
