Depends on whether Mark Linkous releases something this year... that said I havnt heard the great destroyer properly yet...am loving a lifetime of temporary relief mind you.
Fav new album i own so far's prob stero total's 'do the bambi' need some money to get the great destroyer tho.
Unfortunately not, that 2 disc set does look good tho' been listening to some early daniel johnston recently mind... I did hear a few new songs live back in july 03, one called sunshine 2, which was stunning. given that he was talking about new recording techniques and how he's managed to make instruments sound like theyre on fire, i'm very optimistic...
still not heard any magnolia electric co. What are they like?
Instruments on fire, i like the sound of that already. I cheated and just downloaded the song from the Daniel Johnston tribute on Soulseek. It really is great though hearing Linkous and Wayne Coyne crooning along together.
Magnolia Electric Co evolved out of Songs: Ohia - both are pretty much all about singer/songwriter Jason Molina though. Songs: Ohia were more lo-fi and folky, often compared to Will Oldham. MEC are generally a lot more upbeat and countrified, often compared to Neil Young. Mp3s here.
even though it came out last year in America, i'd say so far the Arcade Fire record is pretty high...busy at the mo so haven't had a chance to listen to frances the mute yet...actually i have to say that Funeral probably is the record i've enjoyed most of stuff thats come out this year, as a lot of things have been a slight let down (trail of dead, kaada/patton)
It's bigger and better than everything i've heard for some time (i.e since 'Panopticon') - think early 90's American Metal - Soundgarden, Pumpkins, all washed down with Black Flag
I think people have got the wrong end of the stick here - the Soundgarden/pumpkins reference is to the production -i.e- huge - guitars the size of planets - musically, it's just like MD, but approximately a squillion times better.
I've been reading about choirs too. I really hope that works. So many a decent band have been ruined by over-slick production. I'll have to trust your judgement for now.
I'm looking forward to the new (rumoured) Built to Spill, Broken Social Scene, Silver Jews.....also looking forward to new Stephen Malkmus....so far been enjoying buying old records rather than new.....and E.P. by Fiery Furnaces (although that is old stuff)......Silent Alarm...s'ok.....Arcade Fire....brilliant....last year though but technically this year here so guess it counts.....
Im thinking that Daft Punk's Human After All will be pretty damn good, but having not heard that I'd say The Doves - Some Cities or Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
