I've recently encountered them and have to say they're exactly what I want to listen to right now.
Quite brilliantly mixing everything that's good about my favourite bands. This isn't exactly the sum of it's parts though, which is the only dissapointment I think.
What's the general opinion on them?

i've heard three songs i really like

and with more money i'd be listening to the whole thing right about now :)

I got the album yesterday

I really like it, and I agree completely about being a mix of some great bands, but it's nothing outstanding, just a good listen.

I don't have the album

(I mentioned them the other day) and I like what I heard. A shoegazy Smashing Pumpkins (is it wrong to quote myself?)...nothing mindblowing, but a good solid band. Plus, they're from LA ..and besides Autolux those of us from SoCal don't have all that much to root for.

If Autolux is all you have to root for, I pity you :)

Hmm. I think I would put both bands in the same bracket, and agree with the 'nothing mindblowing' review.

It just...goes. Pleasant, but there is nothing at all to grab hold of and love.

For me, anyway. I think the word 'meh' may have been invented for this band.

I don't find them too 'meaty'

But I think that's probably for the best. They're treading a fine line between pumpkins/pixies/sonicyouth/MBV. A bit surprised that no one I'm aware of has tried it like this before.
I agree on it being 'nice', but think 'meh' is too harsh.

Oh chumbawambabamos...

you doth rain on my parade! Autolux is enough! Plus, every band tours through LA to see the smog and Paris Hilton..so I'll survive.

I like them.

I can see myself getting bored of them though.

YES YES YES.

I adore them. They're playing the Barfly at the end o' this month. Get tickets NOW.

yup

very good band, i like em, gonna go see em over the summer, i think they would be good live, anyone know if that is true?

it's true!

i thoroughly enjoyed them, only seen them once they've got a nice wall of feedback and the drummer has a towering cymbal.

yes it's nothing new and hey, since the smashing pumpkins reformed you can actually see them instead, but i do love their sound and reminds me of the mid-90s.

will try to see them at both london shows me thinks.

london shows

when? whurr?

yep

23rd (support slot though) at water rats and 30th at barfly. woohoo!

I pure hard adore them

tread the same line as pumpkins, but in different shoes. It's much more stoner influenced, and I remember them saying they loved the more experimental parts of sonic youth and kyuss. They are brilliant, reformed pumpkins or no reformed pumpkins.

soundy likey pumpkins

Q. Take away all traces of COrgan and what is left?

A. one song actually, called Kissing Families, as I recall, off their debut EP.

(they are quite good live tho. A bit more dynamic and Pixies basslinerific.)

Lazy Eye is teh aces

but the album does wane pretty quickly. And they spam myspace bulletins too much.

^^^lies

I've had the album on near repeat for the best part of six months, it's honestly one of the best albums of the last few years and I can't wait to see/stalk them in a couple of weeks :D They are a less pretensious Pumpkins crossed with the urgency of Superchunk or Built To Spill balanced with dandy warhols vibe and are more sonically Mogwai than MBV I think. The boots of their live shows is where their true power lies, but I also think the next album will be a huge step on from carnavas. See them dammit!
