Right!
Enough is enough!

I'm sick of people annoucing tours only for Birmingham to be missed out.
It's the centre of the country, it's England's second city and yet we always seem to miss out.

Yes, i know it's a shit hole blah blah blah but seriously, it's getting silly now.

Does anyone here have a serious reason why it's missed all the time. Anyone involved in gig booking?

Please tell me, it's making me angry and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry

Re: What no Birmingham

i heard it is beacuse you all stink.......of piss.

or is this another of those naughty rumours like 'Billie Joe Armstrong has cancer'?

Re: What no Birmingham

Nottingham has sucked away the "midlands" section of most tours. Gigs sell out there more often apparently.

Re: What no Birmingham

well why dont you travel then - its easily done I used to go 20 miles to watch a band - you cant expect everything on a plate in a country this small!

Re: What no Birmingham

Me? I do travel, all the fuckin time. I don't even wanna count how many times I've slept outside Nottingham train station because I didn't want to miss the end of a gig. But it's twice.

Re: What no Birmingham

I beleive you - it jsut annoys me when people whine that a band never comes near your town - I grew up in Wells in Somerset and had to go to Bristol and hitch back or sleep at the bus station as there was no way of getting back not even a bus- it was part fo the fun anyway - and london was always a bigger and messier adventure!

Re: What no Birmingham

Even Leicester I heard is pulling away some of the smaller bands who used to go to Birmingham.

Sorry but this makes me happy, very happy :-)

Re: What no Birmingham

you cant compain really, i live in northern ireland and no-one even looks at this place let alone play here. bands coonstantly announce UK tours but we get left out, have i been under a rock? is northern ireland no longer part of the uk? its the same in the republic very few bands play the republic of ireland either, even then if they did it would only be dublin but thats a wile hassle to get to.

Re: What no Birmingham

wales gets more bands playing than we do

Re: What no Birmingham

but on the other hand is suppose Northern Ireland does get alot of Ash and Snow Patrol shows.

ummmm, "lucky" you

Re: What no Birmingham

wile fucking lucky bland snow patrol being bland and ash are just terrible....i couldn't be bothered trying to even insult them.

Re: What no Birmingham

I understand everyone's sentiments about Birmingham but at least you get some bands.

You haven't grown up near Plymouth, there are no gigs, it's a musical vortex there.
This is even though it's one of the larger cities in this country.
I know there are a few factors like it's geographical position and the lack of decent venue but still you would expect something.

Re: What no Birmingham

Start a gigs night tom! Sounds like there's room for one.

Re: What no Birmingham

Where do I start???

Re: What no Birmingham

Find a venue, make a deal with them about cuts of the entry fee, find out if they have a soundman and PA, if they do then you're go - even better if the venue foot the costs, then email some bands and book them, make some flyers, get an email list, tell everyone ever that it's gonna be the best night in the history of the universe, get mates to help with the door etc, and then hope for the best. Tip: don't guarantee anyone money you aren't 100% sure will be there: venues can make money vanish very easily if things aren't set in stone..

Re: What no Birmingham

"It's in the centre of the country"

So you can travel anywhere pretty quickly from there then!

Re: What no Birmingham

I actually live in Telford, so I travel 40 miles to pretty much every gig I go to.

But yeah, I've done Nottingham, London, Manchester etc.

That's not the point though.
If a band visits London and Manchester on a tour it has to come to Brum to, it makes sense. To me anyway

Re: What no Birmingham

hmm, well you've got the Weez soon, so you can stop your whining for noe...

Re: What no Birmingham

Birmingham sucks thats why. There's like one good venue? And that isn't even really in Birmingham, Jug Of Ale?

Re: What no Birmingham

the academy is cool and the bartenders are stupid enough to serve me(im 15)

Re: What no Birmingham

You're stupid enough to pay 3 pounds for a pint of carling you mean...

Re: What no Birmingham

I'm 16 and the bartenders wouldn't serve me a coke! Well, that may have something to do with the fact that I'm a bit on the ickle side and they couldn't see me ... but still, that's no excuse ... I'm not tiny!

Re: What no Birmingham

In Milton Keynes we only get tiny shite local bands, or massive unaffordable ones like oasis...

Re: What no Birmingham

Eh? No bands come to play in Birmingham? Do you actually look at the gig guides?

In the last couple of months and next few months alone we've had/are going to have (in no particular order, other than the order that spring to mind!) -

Weezer
Doves
Idlewild
Athlete
Death From Above 1979
The Mars Volta
Mercury Rev
The Streets
All those New Cross scene shite bands......over and over again (how fucking many can they churn out?!?!)
The Wedding Present
Maximo Park
British Sea Power
I Am Kloot
Ian Brown
Mull Historical Society
Editors
The Dead 60's
The Zutons
Bloc Party
Kaiser Chiefs
The Futureheads
The Departure
Apartment
Dogs Die In Hot Cars
Tom Vek
Green Day
Kasabian
......and too many more to keep typing!! You get my point!?!?....and their just the one's that I like or think are remotely ok (oh yeah, did see The $hit at The Flapper a few months back, and I've gotta admit John, I thought you really would be shit....but I was strangely surprised....any chance of a demo (yeah I know you've split up!).

Anyway, back to my original point......fuck it, I've forgotten it now....oh hang on....yeah, no-one's 'taking' bands away from Birmingham (especially not Leicester....I dunno, give 'em Kasabian, and they think they're the next great city!!....and Kasabian don't even want to be associated with the city....pathetic!), and if you can't find someone you like from that list, what's wrong with you?

No please don't tell me you want U2 anywhere near this city?!....What was that, they're coming here?....Bollocks!!

Re: What no Birmingham

Well said - it's easy to forget how many bands do actually come here amidst the upset of being missed out by a few, e.g. 65daysofstatic (seems to be what prompted this thread...)

Nottingham, Leicester and Derby are really getting their scenes together - just being that bit smaller seems to make it easier to focus, somehow. I am a bit envious at times, but travelling to the odd gig is a privilege, really.

Re: What no Birmingham

Birmingham gets its share of big bands, but when I moved to Nottingham for uni (from just outside Wolverhampton), I was amazed (nay, staggered) at the number of small, cult bands you get in Nottingham. Acid Mother's Temple, Fly Pan Am, Growing, Micah P.Hinson, Silver Mt.Zion, Lightning Bolt, Jackie O-Motherfucker, Comets On Fire, Bird Blobs, Sunburned Hand Of The Man, Sunn O))), Swearing At Motorists....

I think I'm right in saying that NONE of those artists played in Birmingham. Which is ridiculous, considering its size and given that there are 2 very good venues (the 2 at the Custard Factory in Digbeth). I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that Nottingham has the Damn You!/Gringo collective (www.damnyou.co.uk), and there's nothing quite that big in Brum (tho chicks dig jerks put on some good gigs). Also, the venues in Brum are either tiny or massive: there's no happy/medium venues like the Rescue Rooms.

Re: What no Birmingham

I might be wrong but I think Sunn O))) did play the custard factory a couple of months ago...and I saw the faint there in december. Seems mental complaining there arent enough decent gigs in brum.

As far as 65days of static...they were going to play the planet in wolves at the end of april but that might be in doubt now :(

check the forums at www.clubhell.co.uk nearer the time for confirmation!

Re: What no Birmingham

this is tiring....

Was my initial point made so badly?

I didn't say there's no good gigs/not enough gigs, my point was that no tour should miss Birmingham.

Yeah, I saw 65 days were in Wolvo too, annoyingly I can't go whether it's on or not!

Re: What no Birmingham

Hey, you live in Telford! My mum works in Sainsbury's in Telford. I'm going there next week to watch Harry Hill. Soulless kind of town, innit.

Re: What no Birmingham

Yeah pretty badly.

You did say (and I quote) "Does anyone here have a serious reason why it's missed ALL THE TIME'."

The reason some tours miss Brum is because if, when the gigs are being booked, a particular capacity venue is already taken on a specific night, and no alternative in the city can be arranged, then the band get booked at another venue, which can sometimes be the nearest town/city to it. Hench the missing out of our fair second city.

Right can we move onto a different topic now please?!

Re: What no Birmingham

Have you seen the forum? There are lots of other topics for you to moce on to.

Re: What no Birmingham

* move

Fucksake. I'm sick of this post limiting thing. And not being able to alter my bad spelling and typos. (*storms of in the huff*)

Re: What no Birmingham

Brainlove, stop being sarcy and send me that $hit demo I requested :-) Yeah I know you've split up, but I pointed all this out in the post I made.

Hang on, I'll find it....

Re: What no Birmingham

Here it is:

(oh yeah, did see The $hit at The Flapper a few months back, and I've gotta admit John, I thought you really would be shit....but I was strangely surprised....any chance of a demo (yeah I know you've split up!).

Well?

Re: What no Birmingham

Storms Of In The Huff sounds like a post-rock band.

:D i like taking the piss.

Re: What no Birmingham

What are you moaning about? So your city doesn't get a mention. Well Wales, my entire country, hardly ever does!

Re: What no Birmingham

I KNOW it's a shithole that's why i left.Poor sad Brum somethings never change.
