My favorite band... I miss them so much! Well, I've decided to listen to all of their albums today and I must say they still kick ass.

No one likes S-K?
too bad.
Among the best bands ever
I love S-K. They changed my life, and seeing their final shows has to be two of the greatest moments in my life. They were a band that had it all and stopped at their peak. Corin is working on solo stuff right now, and as broken up as I still am about S-K's "indefinite hiatus," I am really looking forward to whatever she has come up with on her own. I mean, she was like, what-21 years old when she made Calculated with Heavens to Betsy? Total genius.
Great band.
I do miss them !
They were one of the
most consistently good bands in history - sounds weird, but in terms of never releasing a bad record in a career as long as theirs, they are up there with only a few bands including the Beatles
yes
my favourite band ever. and as important to me culutrally as they were musically. there aren't enough bands like that sadly, but S-K were simply unbelievable. Once Carrie held a door open for me, it was a beautiful moment.
.
any news on post-SK music? more quasi?
dunno
how imminenet any new Quasi would be, 'cause last thing I heard Janet was drumming for The Jicks and Bright Eyes. Corin's doing solo stuff though. fo sho.
and carrie
brownstein is writing for the believer magazine.
carrie
is one of my favourite guitarists. her melodies rule all
pointless fact
A girl at the shop I work at comes from the same town and has met Carrie once.
Great band, annoyed I didn't hear of them until after they split :(
Let's Call It Love = near perfection
so
motivated by this thread I just listened to them on myspace - what shall I buy first?
my favourite
is Dig Me Out. But really you cannot go wrong. I prefer their earlier stuff where they are more typically 'riot grrrl' but I know that the last album 'The Woods' is liked by a lot of people who have heard nothing else of theirs.
I would also...
start with Dig Me Out.
Where to start
I'd say either start backwards (the Woods) and work your way back, or do what has worked for so many others and start with Dig Me Out.
And for no particular reason
I thought I should mention that the Woods and the Hot Rock are my favorites.
Dig Me Out
is probably the best starting point, although All Hands On the Bad One is my favourite.
And One Beat and The Woods
just close your eyes and grab one (to DiSer looking for a S-K start).
I was trying to decide whether S-K or Siouxsie was my favorite female led band... I'll keep you updated when I reach a conclusion.
I started with All Hands on the Bad One.
So I'd recommend that.
they're all good.
one beat being the weakest i think. it tails off, and the lyrics make me wince sometimes. they are my favourite band so i can say this sort of thing.
the hot rock is a little effort, but it has the eeriest, most intricate music they've ever made, so worth it.
Call The Doctor
is a very underrated S-K record! I think you should start with that one just because it shows how much they evolved after their debut.
I agree
I love Call The Doctor, it's my favourite S-K record...probably one of my favourite all time albums.
One Beat
I totally agree with you. It ends up being a bit S-K by numbers, and the lyrics are just...dreadful (at times). Prisstina can go die. *shudder*
Dig Me Out or All Hands FTW.
One Beat is excellent.
Dunno what you're talking about.
are you
kidding me? have you listened to the lyrics of pristina? it's the sort of stuff that a precocious twelve year old girl would write.
One Beat is a great album...
And you don't get the song, which, while having substance, is meant to be fun.
haha
yeah, it's really fun.
?
.
Best band ever.
I agree with all the DMO posts, it's probably the most accessible record.
All Hands On The Bad One
is where I started and it remains my favourite to this day, even though Dig Me Out is probably a better album. One Beat is definitely the weakest, but just made The Woods seem even more ace in comparison.
That's the one I got started on too
But I reckon The Hot Rock is probably my favourite - it's got the two intertwining vocals on Burn, Don't Freeze, the riff on God Is A Number and Get Up, which might be their best song ever. Respect!
Coincidentally, I'm wearing my Sleater-Kinney t-shirt to work today.
I got started with the s/t one
'Be Yr Mama' is probably my favourite SK song ever. My girlfriend also noted that this album is 'good angry jogging music'.
Sleater-Kinney
are superb. I think The Woods is the pick of the bunch, with Jumpers being one if the best songs ever recorded.
I'd go in this order (w/best tracks)
The Woods / Jumpers
One Beat / Faraway
All Hands... / Youth Decay
Dig Me Out / Turn It On
Hot Rock / Banned From The End Of The World
Sleater-Kinney / Be Yr Mama
Call The Doctor / The Queen Of Rock & Roll
Only got to see them once and they tuned their gear themselves, and launched straight into the first tune out of kind-of a loose jam. It was at Reading and the rest of the tent was empty...they clashed with Arcade Fire. Fools.
Self-titled better than Call The Doctor?
Controversial! Now, eveyone's entitled to their opinion, and S-K do have a hell of a back catalogue to choose from, but...
Jumpers better than Entertain?
(Agree with Faraway, that tune kicks)
Youth Decay better than The Professional or Pompeii?
Turn It On better than One More Hour?
Banned better than Get Up?
Be Yr Mama better than Lora's Song?
Queen better than Stay Where You Are?
Lunacy, I say!
I like
S-K more than Call The Doctor as I think it's rawer...I make no allusions about which is 'better', I just prefer it!!
As for all the songs...Yes!!
As you say S-K do have an awesome catalogue, and there's barely a duff song on any of the records. They're just my faves.
Fair play to you, sir
I cannot bear malice toward a fellow S-K fan, especially one who'd miss the Arcade Fire to see them play. So... what are the worst Sleater-Kinney songs?
Ones I skip include Prisstina and Milkshake 'n' Honey. Any thoughts?
I don't know about worst
but I just plain don't like Ballad Of A Ladyman.
