I went to see Fightstar last night (featuring Charlie of Busted notoriety) at the APU SU bar in Cambridge. I must say they were average but not without their charms and they obvioulsy enjoyed what they were doing.
However there were some complete idiots behind me who were haranging him all the way through about his Busted connections, obvioulsy thinking they were being incredibly witty, but actually it was nasty. I think that he has shown the ultimate dedication to his musical credibility by giving up millions of pounds and massive fame to play the kind of music he actually cares about. I don't really like that kind of emo stuff but he does and he can't ever be accused of selling out given the choice he has made.

  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

I have it on good authority he may well be at the YMSS tonight in Leicester cause Fightstar are playing at the Charlotte so I'm going for an interview.
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

I honestly think he, and the band, deserve a fair chance.
If they manage to establish themselves (which may take time on the basis of the songs I've heard, which are little more than emo-cum-Kerrang!-style-post-hardcore by numbers), then I'm sure the hecklers will slip into the shadows.
From what I know, and what I've seen, Charlie's a good guy, and does deserve some credit for sticking his neck out.
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

Of course you could argue that he's played on his fame from Busted to get a break for his identikit emo band, which would otherwise have sunk without trace. No?
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

hopefully if everyone does leave him alone and ignores him he will realise what a mistake he has made in deciding to pursue a career in music and will get a job in a chicken factory.
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

He's kinda gotta expect some shit though, he was in busted... they did the thunderbirds song, the only soundtrack worse is miss spongebob-nod-head-squarepants lavigne's version of the classic spongebob tune
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

i think its reli hard not to prejudge due to the fact he was in vusted. i cnt deny it i do quite like their song and their albums pretty good but so many people find it easier to say "oh they suck cus its charlie 'busted'" Some of these people who say that dont even take time to listen 2 other bands but honestly i think he is gonna have trouble fitting in because so many people see him as that busted kid...
    • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

He's going to have trouble because his band is peddling vapid, identikit toss. Becuase they are somewhat less than average and about as relevant as Flanagan and Allen.
      • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

        tory-emo is an interesting concept.
        • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

i kinda like there songs nd yeh fairplay bt im jst hoping all the kids hu did like busted will nt neccesarily be gr8 fans of fightstar becus of charlies connection bt will be changed from pop to rock nd different nd beta stuff

            <---- A Keyboard, NOT a mobile phone.
Can people stop typing in text, it's really irritating and hard on the eyes.

He deserves to be given a chance, but I think he'll for a long time, if not always, have the manufactured stigmata of Busted follow him and your always going to get people who are going to bate him.
Did anyone really seriously want to see Daphne and Celeste that time when they got bottled off?
            • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

sorry i'm just used to it
              • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

Well that can't be helped at times, but in the long run its not going to help if you get into the habit of doing it on a computer keyboard - plus it makes it difficult on the eyes and can sometimes be hard to read....and it's irritating.
                • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

To be honest the only thing I wonder about is why Charlie seems to like such good music (Mono, Mogwai, Sonic Youth, Elliott Smith, Dinosaur Jr. etc) and yet is still fronting a shite post-hardcore band. I don't really have a problem with him as a person - he seems like a nice enough guy - but I can understand how fucking annoying it is to see a band like Fightstar (who, let's be honest, shouldn't be playing anything above their local pub) suddenly getting all these gigs on the basis of one member. Hell, I'm in a band and I'm annoyed.
            • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

haha. i can't believe nobody picked you up on this .... charlie will be held back by the STIGMATA of being an ex-member of Busted?

              priceless...
          • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

I ahted busted and i didnt want to evan listen to fight star because of charlie but my m8 played them to me and said they were sum1 else and there wernt actualy to bad!!!! as much as it pains me to say it they were ok!!!
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

I was one of the 'complete idiots'/'utter twats' heckling fightstar on Thursday, in fact I might even have been the one standing behind you. To clarify, a) Was it really a good use of my time? No, not particularly but it was quite enjoyable and there wasn't really anything else interesting to do b) I think I'd be hard pushed to describe shouting 'busted' at a fightstar gig as 'incredibly witty' but c'mon it was a little bit funny. Jesus, lighten up a bit.

Taking things too seriously is a major problem in all things Fightstar related. I'm immensely bored of people telling me they 'deserve' to be taken seriously. Why the fuck to they deserve to be taken seriously? Fightstar are an inherently ridculous proposition. Giving up Busted for Fightstar was not some kind of Gandhi-esque act of personal sacrifice for Charlie. He's made an absolute mint playing cheap and cheerful teen pop songs, amassing a personal fortune he'd struggle to spunk away in a million years. Fightstar isn't an artistic sacrifice it's an ego-wank fiction where Charlie gets to play the 'proper' rock star. Essentially Charlie is your mate who writes crappy love songs on acoustic guitar and insists on playing them to everbody around the campfire at festivals. Charlie is rich and famous but no less daft or pointless.

The most frustrating thing is that people keep swallowing this toss. If everyone could just laugh along we'd be fine. But I've read numerous posts along the lines of 'I don't like the music but I think what he's doing is good' WHAT? Why? If you disliked Busted and you dislike Fightstar what makes Fightstar good in comparison? Selling less records or playing to less people doesn't make a band better. This I suppose is the heart of the matter. If Fightstar were actually any good we could perhaps move beyond the Busted issue, but they just aren't, they really, really aren't. Fightstar inhabit a musical dead end already packed with the rotting remains of a million crappy emo bands who have been before. At best they're support act at your toilet venue quality and even then people would think they were dull. The only reason fightstar exist and the only resoned they headlined at the APU is because Charlie was in Busted. Simple as. Therefore, I don't think it's that unreasonable to take the piss out of them for it.

Possibly I've spent too long thinking about all this.
    • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

The man above me...spot on. And the fact they have got the superior Armor For Sleep to support them on their upcoming tour is a testament to the powers Char-ley still has in the music biz.
      • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

Being another one of the so-called utter twats spoken of, I must say that there is nowt wrong with a little heckling, especially considering it was entirely jovial in nature. I am not one to "diss" charlie, as I would like to have his babies. However, I believe I am just in saying why the fuck didn't he stay in busted?? why? They were just so much more, um, melodic. Although I did enjoy the rapid head shaking action of afore-mentioned fightstar member on Thursday evening.
Anyways, let us put our differences aside for a while and spare a thought for the true victims of this story- James and Matt. God bless em.
        • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

did anyone hear their live session on xfm? it was fucking appalling!
          • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

I attend the apu. But i tend to avoid the student bar and luckly so on the nightstar played. Someone was telling me about how great it was as I rolled my eyes. I wasnt going to try to explain the importance of integrity in the art of making music. For example, thunderbirds. Any musician who wants to be taken seriously, but has appeared on the side of a macdonalds drink does not deserve £9.99 of my money. I feel sorry for his new band members but as for charlie - fuck off back to disney rock world and stop singing like you've got some sort of depth of character because it is just noise pollution - shockingly weak.

Bullshit, he is alreay a millionaire, it wont make much difference to him, How much do you think his video cost??
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

I imagine he's still got his millions of pounds. Or however much Busted made. Probably not that much actually. But enough to make them declare that they'd all vote Tory so they could pay lower taxes. Wankers.
    • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

If i had millions of pounds i would form my own party to ensure that i didnt pay any tax.
    • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

What's so bad about not wanting the government to take away your hard earned moeny? They made a fortune because they wrote their own stuff and racked in a lot of royalties. I'm going to go out on a limb and declare that I actually like fightstar.
      • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

Yeah and with lyrics like "it's what I go to school for" or "I'm glad I crashed the wedding" - their up there on the wall of great lyricists amongst people like Jim Morrison, Billy Corgan, Jimmy Page and Jeff Buckley.
        • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

Considering their target audience and purpose, there is absolutely nothing wrong with Busted's lyrics. When did they claim to be like Jeff Buckley or Billy Corgan in terms of lyrics?
          • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

Jim Morrison was a greay lyricist? Pseudo-shamanic alcoholic cunt seems far more accurate. Fair go on Janis Joplin for decking him.
            • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

Could I just point out that integrity in music isn't the same as not making any money.

Oh and Busted properly shit on Jim Morrison when it comes to lyrics. Light My fucking Fire indeed.
              • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

wahey shitestar are so fucking angsty and edgy you'd cut yourself listening to them
                ballbags the lot of them
                • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

                  Stone the Crows people!
                  Chill!
I was just being sarcastic! Didn't mean that I considered Morrison and the following to be great lyricsts, I meant that whenever you get lists of Lyricists - their names crop up.
Shall I go and cut off my offending hand to appease you all?
                  Sheesh!
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

can i just say that you're all focusing on charlie here but its not his band, there's four of them. don't they deserve a chance (not charlie, the others)? if you don't like them fine, but apparantly some people do, hence their EP selling out. yes, i have seen them live (i actually went to see cryforsilence who were supporting) and didn't think they were too bad. although, i did go in with low expectations but still. also, they may be 'done-a-million-times-before emo/pos-hardcore' or whatever but at least they don't have the whiny voices of other emo bands. also, if you don't like them, just ignore them, you don't have to get so worked-up and aggresive about the whole issue. after hearing their stuff i definitely think they'll die down from the mainstream (the kiddies won't like the screaming/shouting they seem to do on the occasion). think i'm done now..
  • Re: Leave Charlie Fightstar alone.

    OK, I'll leave him alone.
