Brooklyn’s Grizzly Bear’s left-of-centre indie-pop meanderings might not pack as instantaneous a punch as, say, Wolf Parade or Clap Your Hands…, but the subtleties within this standalone single – pulled from the band’s recommended Yellow HouseLP of last year – are what make it such a very special listen. Less oomph and more aaaah, it’s a tease of a track, gently dragging its audience through washes and drones and delicately plucked strings ‘til it fades away under a chorus of child-like yelps.

Gradually building an incredible live reputation – the four-piece recently sold out a brace of nights at their hometown’s Bowery Ballroom – Grizzly Bear aren’t likely to translate such on-stage success into top 40 consistency with releases like ‘Knife’, as it’s simply too gorgeous a go-nowhere-beautifully song to be tarnished by the brush of commercial-cum-mainstream acceptance; as a showcase for Yellow House and the band’s UK dates of this month, though, it serves its purpose spectacularly.

There’s a heart of pop within these mumbled phrases and layers of unobtrusive sound, but it’s a type of pop rarely seen in the wilds of modernity. It’s a pop that’s timeless, untied to one place or one fashionable movement; it’s a pop you want to keep close, telling only your very nearest and dearest about its delights. It’s pop that doesn’t know just how perfect it is.

slow cutter

Agreed, this is not an immediate impact single, but it's a slow-burning standout from the album.

i'm very little

aware of grizzly bear's music, but i have a copy of knife. i like it.

and i'm so internally ecstatic that they are playing leicester tomorrow you wouldn't imagine. about 4 uk dates and leicester is one, it's great!

The whole album has grown on me so much

It's not very poppy at all though.

Still, brilliant song, one of the highlights.

Sounds like a great 50s song

Classic slow dance number given a sonically beautiful treatment.

Has a couple drawbacks, tho:

a) It's been out for quite a while now and no followup single has emerged from the record. Mostly because the rest of the cuts are forgettable.
b) Lyrics are creepy and don't fit the song at all. "With every blow" "can you feel the knife" huh?
c) Everything past the "knife" outro is superfluous noodling. This is a 3min pop song with a coda tacked on for no reason.

That might make it sound like I don't like the song. Au contraire. I agree w/the 9. Just that the song should have been a 10.

I am amazed

by Grizzly bear. I bought Yellow House after hearing good reviews, and at first thought it was weird but it completly washes over you-you become obsessed with its beauty wihout even realising you're listening.

Knife is genius. Buy Yellow House

These guys

Are amazing. Easily one of the best records of last year. A must-buy if you haven't gotten it.

Grizzle Bizzle

were stunning in leicester on wednesday. Pure, gliding, sonic lushness.
