Can anyone think of any bands who were tipped for the big time but dissappeared / split up quickly afterwards? I am doing a feature on a radio show and struggling to think of bands, so far I have Crashland and mo-ho-bi-sho-bi! any help would be great. Thanks, Tim

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Terris? - i think they were tipped to be bigger than Coldplay back in the day, and by all rights should have been - christ knows what they're up to know

ummm..

i'll have to get back to you on any more...

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Mmm Terris, I heard about them at the time, I recall Melody Maker hyping them...but never heard them until recently on my Dead Cheap Fierce Panda Sampler, they sound great, tis a shame as that was a standout track which I keep playing during my weekly dj spot.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Terris were the biggest load of shit ever, and quite right so have slipped into obsurity.Thank God some things work out.New Joy Division?! ha ha ha

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

just remembered halo too, altho they've allegedly reformed under a different name, not sure what as tho.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I was unfortunate enough to have seen Terris supporting At The Drive-In at the Astoria in 2000/2001, they were awful. Except they did have a pretty funny fat keyboard player.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Also My Vitriol were tipped but sunk.
And some awful brummie band called King Adora

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

King adora were absolute cunts (cant be arsed to explain but trust me), but depressingly they're still going, they took an extended hiatus due a members prediliction for a certain white powder (allegedly)

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I used to like King Adora when i was an angsty teen, now they make me laugh. Keep them coming!

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

one of the reasons they were cunts is that they fucked insecure 15 year olds and told them it was a good idea to cut themselves and be bulemic.

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

thats certainly one of the reasons, you from brum?

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

nah, just the first girl i fell in love with (unrequited, natch) was a sliightly confused self harmer who was obsessed with them and slept in their tour van. not that i'm jealous, my opinion of them being cunts could be based entirely on their music alone.

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I adored My Vitriol's Finelines. They've just started playing gigs again as I think they've finished or are about to finish their second album...finally!

I bet it's gonna suck though...the remix of Finelines made me cry, sell outs.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

one of terris wiped his nose on my jumper at glastonbury once, so i'm glad they sank without trace, rude little shits that they were!

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

That's fucking disgusting! i'd have kicked him around the field.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

#blows raspberry# beat you to it! - also try Vex Red - only lasted 1 album and two singles ( i think),
also

zwan (1 album, 2 singles)

crap, this is harder than i thought...

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I wore my Cay 'nature creates freaks' tshirt today. They were pretty great from what i remember, but never made it past their good early singles. i've also got a llama farmers tshirt that i wear just in case someone in a million years says "hey i remember them." how about dark star? they had a single called i am the sun i think. hmmm....Sona Fariq were tipped to be big. very big egos but fantastic live so i didnt mind.
I was also thinking that if groop dogdrill had been around in the last few years, been slightly younger and had trendier haircuts, they would have been a shitload bigger than jet or the shitting datsuns.
shame shame shame.

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

i remember the llama farmers!

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

my lifes work is complete.
i still own their first 3 or 4 singles. not too bad but slightly embarrassing lyrically and vocally. they actually released two albums, but i dont think anyone cared by the time the second one came out.

actually talking of young bands, no one ever talks about symposium any more, which is probably a good thing

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Ah Llama Farmers & Symposium! I Love you hehe

I've posted about Llama Farmers quite a few times...they were great *cries* But really young and split to go to uni...that really sucked. Both albums were great as were their b-sides.

And I can't remember the reason Symposium split, but they were great too (tho not quite as), bless them. I think it's 2 of their ex members that are in Hell is for Heroes now hmm...they're pants in comparisson.

*mourns both* They were the soundtrack to my college years *sighs*

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Yeah, there are few ex-symposium in hell is for heroes and your right they're no where near as good.

Anyone remember blue?

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

When I was younger, my funds were more limited and whenever I went into the local music shop, I'd always find myself buying Symposium singles due to their cost effectiveness. £1.49 and always with three new b-sides! My collection used to make me look like a big fan, but in reality I'm just a cheapskate!

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

my mate's brother was the guitarist in Cay....they weren't very good but he did go out with Sophie Dahl for a short while, which doesn't really make up for it.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

they arent gone they are playing download in the summer

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

was it cay who used to have to go and buy back their instruments from pawn shops before gigs?

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

yes, two of them were smack addicts.....twats

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

See my comments on king adora a couple of posts up from here... also twats

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

hmm had no idea about the smack thing, i do remember them getting a new guitarist before they played main stage at reading, and then totally disappearing.

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Cay were awesome. I just tracked down Llama Farmers Always Echoes the other which i still quite like.
I think most bands that played the NME awards shows things in the late nineties were "meant" to be big. one day.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

ultrasound? kind of...

signed for a million to nude, released an album but unfortunately more effort had been put into the packaging than the music. never lived up to the hype and brought nude down in the process. but they were a really really good band and probably would have done really well had they not been overhyped and had too much money thrown at them. a sad story...

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

you're in the same band was such a good tune.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

ROSS HUBERT AND THE MOTHERFUCKERS

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

ultrasound were a cracking live band too, i miss them!

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

let's not forget Serafin

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Serafin are still going, they've just finished their second album, and Ben's brother Christian quit Razorlight as their drummer just before they broke, to join Serafin. They appear to have dissapeared because when the EP's were out they played shit loads of gigs and were hyped but the album was a let down. (Bloody bands who redo perfectly good tracks between EP's and albums grr See also: Easyworld, now officially dead) I still love them as they have sentimental value for me but check out Ben and Christian's first band, Stony Sleep, excellent.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

*Laughs* Halo were doing well until they put Vampire song on their album and got ripped to parts by every music critic! I heard they reformed under a different name too and that they'll never play Halo songs again...can't remember what they're called now but I've not noticed any new bands with similar looking members.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

they're called the Vega Method.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Fischerspooner. Alleged £1m record deal with Ministry of Sound, then vanished off the face of the earth. Weird. But then, it is RAVE music, eh kids? It must be RUBBISH.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Erm, i think when i was flicking through nme in hmv the other day that i saw an article about a fischerspooner come back.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Thirteen:13
Crashland
Darkstar

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

i think one of them Thirteen:13 guys is now part of the girl-boy duo The Honeymoons

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

yeah, Fischerspooner got single of the week in the latest NME. Emerge aside, their debut album wasn't much cop really.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Yeah, Fisherspooner's new single on MTV2/the Amp fairly often atm.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Find any fierce panda compilation, absolute wealth of bands who were meant to make it but never did.

in my personal opinion the starries were one of the biggest casualties, tipped by john peel and steve lamacq, got a demo at parlophone at the same time as idlewild and then nothing. Check out the retrospective on bearos records, its very very good.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I always thought of stony sleep as a weaker watered down version of placebo,

also the llama farmers were ace.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

3 Colours Red & Elviss, they weren't around long were they?

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

i think elviss are still around, altho not being hyped enough by nme etc.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

3CR reformed and released a terrible, terrible album last year, Fischerspooner are coming back, and they're as shite as ever, JJ72 are releasing their third album this summer, Elviss are still around - ocassionally pump into their drummer when i'm back home.

Umm,
CO.UK, or as they later re-named themselves, CO.DOT, who released a great little pop-punk racket 'Freakazoid' about 6, maybe 7 years ago, they've disappeared.
Also Crackout - they're nowhere to bee seen

and there's more somewhere....

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

mmmm, slightly unfortunate there- of course it's meant to read 'Bump into', not 'Pump Into' - that'd be just wrong.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

the tip of the tongue betrays the back of the mind

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Crackout have taken a rest, starred in a movie and now meant to be working on third album, altho havent heard any of new stuff.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

i've got the co.uk single big green bath, and its not actually that awful. what that guy said about fierce panda comps was very true, wouldnt mind getting a copy of some of those, would take me back 5 years or so to listening to llamo every night and shock horror, buying singles every week.

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Yeah I loved the CO.DOT track Freakazoid (why did they change their name to something equally as shit?)...twas on a Melody Maker cd I had. Went to see the Dum Dums (Shame) at the Scala largely because they were supporting, very good live from memory...dunno whether I'd like them now though really.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Stony Sleep were great! I dunno why they actually split in the end but see previous mention of Ben and Christian in Serafin (Christian also ex Razorlight)...Lee Citron was in Kicks Joy Darkness after but the majority of that band got killed in a crash, harsh.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

thought of another...Marion.
very smithy style indie rock, first album was alright, nice singles including the rather classic Sleep. problem was the singer....Jamie Harding i think...was a complete smackhead which meant a 3 year wait until their second, much better johnny marr produced album, by which time no one gave a shit. i quite liked them.

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Is Sleep the song that went 'In a sense we're exactly the same, 'cause with both so different in every way'? I quite liked that one too.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

yup. i'm actually going through some of these cds now so i might put mp3s up of selected songs.
keep em peeled

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Jus thought of another... the junket, released an ep on deceptive then one album and that was it despite being really rather good.

Really good for nostalgia this thread

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

yeh i remember them, thought they were great. another is liberty 37, a rather good grungey band who would have been massive if they were american.

hmm seems like you and me must have been listening to/reading the same music radio/papers at around the same time.

Jamie

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Makes sense, seeing as we're the same age. Got to second your point on marion to, i'd completely forgotten about them.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I'd agree with Vex Red. Scenes (band with 4/5ths of VR) also seem to have disappeared completely after one tour back in November 2003 with Reuben.

Serafin were horrible, and I'm glad they're gone. The last time I heard of them was when I went to see Oceansize support them in London, and I left immediately after the 'size.

Redefine. Bristol band on Sugarshack. Released 3 singles, and one album, 'The Daisychaincycle'. Were like Far, Glassjaw, thisGIRL and Deftones bastardising each other with jazz timings. Had an absolute genius of a guitarist (also great with beats and electronics), and they would've been massive. I got their album for £3 in a Cash Converters.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

there were some really good songs by both Terris and Marion. Does anyone remember Cube? Tipped by NME and fucking awful...

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

The Copperpot Journals

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

yeah but ben kweller made it afterwards so didnt completely disappear

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Yeah i know. :)

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I thought the same about Send No Flowers at the time, but now listening back to it, it's hideously dated!

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Can't say i miss many of these bands. There's a very good reason why most of them sunk without a trace.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Did Crashland actually split? I liked that album.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

yeah, apparently they did according to their new lable (sugar shack) although nothing official was said, they just did a disappearing act.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

2 members of mo-ho-bish-o-pi are now in the International Karate +.

Midget were tipped to greatness but sell records only in Japan ( their last album wa sonly released there ).

The very young girls of Chicks disappeared after 2 singles.

The Young Offenders and the Smiles were dropped before their first album was released.

Fuzz light years were supposed to change back after a name change but where are they now ?

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I was one of the few people that like Mo-Ho-Bish-O-Pi

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Yeah, I'm joining the Mo*Ho club - Hear The Air is, completely without hyperbole, one of the greatest singles ever made. And what was it with all the owls at the Reading Festival gig???

Redefine were the bollocks, too. I reviewed their album for some crappy magazine or other, and if I remember rightly, they knocked it down from a 9 to an 8. It really was that good.

...and lest we forget Send No Flowers

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Yeah Mo-Ho were great. And the IK+ are too.

And i forgot Medal, Elcka, Perfume, Turn, Wilt, Twist, Gel...
Not so many bands survived more than 2 albums these days.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

Been listening to the Turn album lots recently...they were buzzing about somewhere last year, meant to tour but not sure what happened...might go check that out...

Wilt released that second album which totally sucked, Bastinado was great though.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

I remember going to wilt's first ever sell out gig and ending up talking to them after it because we were waiting for a lift, they were lovely.

Then it all went quiet for a bit, until they resurfaced on the myvitriol 'comeback' tour (ahem) and they were shit with a second guitarist who just seemed to ruin things, oh and cormac had lost his glasses and seemed to be trying to be a yank.

Still bastinado was really good.

Re: Bands that dissapeared quickly!

One of Young Offenders has since gone on to be Simple Kid and get (barely) top 40 success though.
