the most blatant plagiarism yet

i'll be very surprised if nobody else has noticed how that new idlewild single steals at least twice, parts of Mad World by Tears for Fears - he even sings the lines like in the Donnie Darko version - one is "happy birthday", i can't remember the other line.

am i the only person to spot this? it's so obvious it's scary.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Makes a change from re-recording Teenage Fanclub songs, I suppose.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Nah, the most blatent plagiarism ever is Are you gonna be my girl by Jet shamelessly stealing the intro from Lust for life by Iggy Pop. I was speechless when I first heard it.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

lol I was just about to say that as well. The word Plagerism is synonymous with Jet in my mind.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Tribute bands like Jet don't plagerise!

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Well the drummer certainly is a tribute...he thinks he's Liam Gallagher with that stupid skanky beard, hair and daft hat.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

I never understood his motive behind that, he just looks a plank...

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

The new Green Day single sounds like a rip off of The Passenger by Iggy Pop.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

You're the second person I've heard say that, but I still can't hear it. Do you mean generally, or a specific part of it?

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Yeah I've heard people say that - I'll have to pay more attention to it this time rather than changing the channel.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Is plagiarism really the greatest sin in music or is it sometimes a good thing? Is a band or artist creatively bankrupt because they knock off band A's riff once or the singers of Band A and Band B happen to sound the same? It's along the lines of the comparison debate. If a band sounds alot like something that's gone before (face it alot do) that shouldn't render them useless musicians or less of an interesting prospect musically, should it?

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

well yes, its fair enough if people take a lot of influence from bands they like. but it is the lack of any creativity in plagiarising a riff or a lyrics straight from somebody else.
its the equivalent of copying a painting. it might be a really good painting, but none of the inspiration for it has come from the artist, however talented.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

The chord progression at the beggining and the way the chords are strummed are similar I would say. Not the entire song, just that bit.

In answer to Patricide, I think knocking off someone's riff is pretty lazy. If someone is inspired by a bands' particular sound and incorporate elements of that, then it's all good. But literally nicking a riff because you can't be arsed (or don't have the talent) to write your own is pretty weak IMHO.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Remember people, "imitation is the greatest form of flattery".

Seriously though I see what Darcy means about the new GD song being like passenger.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

I don't see how anyone can't see the comparison between GD Holiday and Passenger. Um that is lazy and it doesn't enhance the song at all. I just wanted to know if any of you had any examples where plagiarism was warranted/worked well. People say Slow hands intro/tune sounds just like Take Me Out. Assuming that was an unconcious decision, I wonder how many bands do this and then get slated for being copyists and does it depend on the band/artist plagiarising? Some bands are slated to hell for it and others aren't. The Jet song may steal IP's intro but I still see scores of people cheering and dancing when that song comes on.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Well I think tons of bands do the vocal harmony thing and get compared to The Beach Boys. I think possibly they created a kind of standard way of doing vocal harmony, which bands use and don't get slated for it.

Coldplay's Shiver is a blatant take on Buckley's Grace (Martin admits it). I don't think this is a bad thing as Shiver is a fucking ace song...in instances like this I guess it can be a good thing. When artists hear something they love and say "I wanna write something like that</>". Often the resulting song is far enough away from the original not be slated.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

I thought the Thrills got slated for it? haha I don't know if that's true or not but I thought I read it/heard it. I do believe they're an example of a band taking influences lazily and creating nothing new from what they garner. However take The Futureheads. I'm told they sound like Gang Of Four (true?) but they what they do with vocal harmony and music and the conventional idea of song is pretty brilliant IMHO. Their cover of HOL is amazing and definitely falls into good flattery. Oasis used to pilfer left right and centre (even down to Me And You) and when you hear it now it seems laughable but then again at the time I thought alot of those songs were wonderful.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

The italics are taking over! They are rising up to overthrow us! Arrrrrgh!

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

wait Has this helped?

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

What the fuck have you done Darcy? Will I get accused of plagiarism if my post is in italics as well? I just wanna be like yooo-ooo-oooooooo...

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

So somebody actually pays you two to work? Where oh where can I be paid for playing on DIS all day?

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Dental journalism honey, that's the game you wanna be in. Writing about teeth? No thanks, I've got inane comments about italics and the Kings of Leon to make ;)

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Is that what you do? Do you get free check-ups/cosmetic dentistry discounts/whitening toothepaste. Funny I did study journalism. In a few months I should be doing something of that ilk though please god not teeth/steel and metals/finance etc etc.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Yup, this is where my journalism degree has got me, via three years of pissing around managing pubs and growing a beer belly. I get shit loads of free dental goodies, got a smart-arse electric toothbrush next to my super-expensive toothpaste in the bathroom. Ain't I the lucky one...I am trying to break free though, by reviewing records and things. I will fulfill my goal of being paid for using my writing talents regarding music eventually. Please God I will...

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

HeHeHe, Bamos do you write in those really crappy magazines you only get at the dentist?

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Haha brusha brusha brusha it's healthy for your teeth. Darcy remains silent, perhaps he's been forced to do some work.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Yes, I write for 'The Probe' (ahem) and Smile magazines. My job is ace. Look out for me next time you're waiting for those Mick Hucknall-esque jewel implants.

Kids - stay in school for as long as is humanly possible. The real world sucks :)

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

I remember Smile magazine the last time in the dentist.
Do you write the articles?

It was so bad i decided to play with the toys.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

bamos....what's hot in the world of dentistry these days?

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

What's hot? Erm...I'd be looking at Beverly Hills Formula as the best whitening toothpaste on the market at the moment...wait...I don't actually care....what are you people doing to me?!!

And Smile is pretty shit. You're right there. I do pretty much everything. And there's my name, resplendent in the 'Sub-Editor' position. The only benefit of this is that if you google my proper name, I'm the first answer. Which is a shit claim to fame, but it's my claim...

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Ooo Ooo what's your proper name then? I'm bored.

Are the benefits of an electric toothbrush worth the extra cost factor involved?

What are your views on mouthwash?

How about flossing?

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Mouthwash is just great, I particularly enjoy Dentyl PH....great stuff.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Seriously, how bored are you?!

1) Yes

2) Use it, end of. But don't swallow. I remember my mum telling my sister that once, but that may have been about something different...

3) A more than useful adjunct to brushing, well worth making it part of your daily routine.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

So bored...

Im currently writing "Why does methodology play a critical role in developmental research?"

Even more boring then Smile Mag.

I'm paying for not doing any work in the weekend and doing a whirlwind trip of all the gay bars in Leicester, but that's another story.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Fucking sub editing scum! haha you're usually the most hated bunch in editorial departments aren't you? Hmm can you use Illustrator and InDesign then? I can barely get my head around Photoshop, not without hours to play on it. Smile and Probe? hilarious.

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Does anyone else think the people from Countdown totally copied The Fall's Psykick Dancehall for their theme tune?

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

graham coxon - freakin out is also the skids into the valley

the futureheads - decent days and nights is also the knack's my sharona

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Another absolute classic is cigarettes and alcohol ripping of that t-rex song whose name escapes me right now (although noel does at least admit to ripping it off)

Re: the most blatant plagiarism yet

Did anyone else think that the riff from that new U2 song (Vertigo) sounded just like the one from that crappy Vines song, Get Free, I think.
