LCD Soundsystem's last record, Sound Of Silver, was not very good. (DiS’s Gareth Dobson had a very different opinion mind you, review - Ed.) This single from that record is not very good, either. It begins promisingly enough, tripping over itself in an entertainingly technical cross-rhythmed piano sort of way, and then just plods ‘til its inevitable Noo-Yoik disco climax. One grasps for more ways to describe the song than this potted account, but there really is little else going on. 'All My Friends' is by no means devoid of enjoyable features, but it's hard to believe that anyone would listen to this and think it was actually finished.
The anguished vocal is not nearly anguished enough to garner much emotional connection, and the DFA label has seen about six billion more readily danceable tunes released into the world than this one. A trifle more energy and invention is required to befit the flagship act of a flagship label, and LCD Soundsystem have fallen sadly short of the mark. Desperately asking "where are your friends tonight?" seems a little bit too much like a cruel joke here.

Damn.
I chuffing love this song and 'Sound of Silver' is easily in my top five records of the year so far...
I don't know why
but I've never really got LCD Soundsystem at all.
Nothing typed here, comment begins below...
I didn't get the first album but this one has some actual melodies on it. I think its a great track despite it being uncomplicated and seemingly unfinished. I even like the fact that its basic - it just works.
this
is totally the lamest non-review i've ever read on drowned in sound, can i have your job please?
Whaaaat??
Sorry Daniel, you are just wrong on this one. Great song, excellent album, best of the year so far and the covers for the b sides are brilliant as well.
Not good?!
This is MADNESS!
this is SPARTA
seriously though, the review is so wrong
Hmmm...
Aside from the fact that I loved Sound of Silver (the best example of an art rock album this year) and thought All My Friends was the most interesting account of success and growing old, the fact is that James Murphy founded DFA. I find it unlikely that he would drop himself from his own label.
Yes, the single does sound musically like a Secret Machines piano riff looped for eternity, but collectively with the lyrics and other sonic flourishes, it's a deeply reflective, affecting and profound listen.
5????
This song deserves way more than 5! And Sound of Silver isn't good? This IS madness.
SO WRONG
but then again, i suppose they're no idlewild.
^^^^^^
Exactly. The Secret Machines is a redunant comparison. It's not as if they didn't steal that idea from about thrity years ago anyway. PLus, how are the Secret Machines anywhere near as good as LCD.
James Murphy is the mouthpiece of a generation. Not my generation, he's a bit too old, but if age the same way, ill be muchly pleased.
?
What an awfully wrong review.
Poor decision
I agree that the new LCD album isn't as good as the debut, but its still pretty good and All My Friends, to me, is the standout track.
LOL etc
This song is ace. So's the album.
>>
if this is an experiment into how wide of the mark a music review can actually be, then congrats
its all subjective blahdeblah etc, but seriously Mr. Ross.. you barely deserve to have ears, never mind a position as a music journalist
Cont
-roversial
For what its worth, I totally disagree with you and think you obviously must have put on a Klaxons record or something...
Did
you hit the wrong key on your damn board? You meant to press 8, or 9.
seriously though,
you're a towel. This song is great Mr Daniel Ross. So there.
i never used to like LCD that much
but
thus far this is BOTH single and album of the year for me
and you stuff your Bjork album up yer arse
seriously
this is up there with
Ceremony by New Order, and
Robots by Kraftwerk, and
There Goes The Fear by Doves and
It is an unbelievably inventive, poignant, danceable, intense, whistleable, neck hair erectng, spine tingling, momentous rolling glitterball of invention.
Daniel: never write about music again.
Bit harsh...
...One man's onion is another's arsehole.
Or something.
Can I correct you on one thing there:
It is an unbelievably inventive, poignant, danceable, intense, whistleable, neck hair erectng, spine tingling, momentous rolling glitterball of (re)invention.
But you were spot on...
but
There Goes The Fear is dull!
brother
i feel for you on this one. although i got a kicking for the manics review, and those guys definitely are shit.
no energy?!!
This is the stand out track on the album, a New Order homage... such a good track - i dance a lot to this.
i can see
that LCD soundsystem isnt everyone's cup of tea...but for what they do they do it bloody well..
this track is class.. and matches the quality of the rest of the album.
yeah...
... i still don't like it much. i know lots of people really dug this record, but i just didn't. seemed kind of boring.
aaaaaaaaand slate me!!
This song sounds like the Strokes
When they were good, but the Strokes nonetheless.
whaaaaaaaaaaaat!
this is one of my singles of the year so far! 9/10 and the albums brilliant. Far more consistent than the first record.
WHy were you reviewing this song then?
If you didn't like the album why were you reviewing the single?
As you can see from all the comments. We all like it. You don't. We're right. and you sir, are entitled your completely ill informed and incorrect opinion.
this
is an amazing song, it's video is quality too + the franz ferdinand cover is brilliant! seriously, one of my favourite songs this year!
ok,my last post was a bit "Disgusted of Cheshire"
here's my calm analysis of why your review is fairly wide of the mark:
basically, the whole piece is so loaded with preconceptions you can barely see anything else.
It's not danceable? I sort of agree, its a bit too offbeat and unfunky to get me hitting the dancefloor. But is that really the point? Is that what they were aiming for? To me it seems far more indebted to Krautrock than any sort of 4-to-the-floor dance number. But you're thinking hey, it's the DFA flagship, and they make dance music right? But this isn't as good a dance song as some of the rest, its a bit too ploddy. This to you = Not Good. But maybe its supposed to, you know, fit with the mood and message of the music and not just provide some identikit beat that you can shake your bits to. Maybe the sluggishness is supposed to tie in with the weariness and dissatisfaction of the lyrics and music. Maybe i've read to much in to it there, but the point remains
On the same point, you seem to expect dance music, but also denigrate it for having 'little else going on'. Ummm.. isn't that a main feature of this style of music? Repetition. He's unlikely to chuck in a time-changed bridge or a pensive ukelele solo or some other piece of 'interest'. And if it is like i think a motorik influenced piece, then repetiton is absolutely key to the whole thing, and there's no need for the ebbing and flowing, 'build it up then drop the shit' sort of style you might get on a dancefloor number
As for the vocals not being 'anguished enough'... who the fuck says vocals have to be anguished to have emotional resonance, or at least anguished past a certain level? Maybe the semi-anguished, disdainful tone represents something of the personality or mood of the people involved in the narrative. Just because it doesn't feature breakdown histrionics doesn't mean emotion isn't adequately expressed. Look at the vocal performance on Someone Great for proof that a style of singing unconventional to the purpose of expressing emotions can be more expressive than a billion warblers (that is, to my mind, the most powerful song of recent times and the highpoint of the album)
I also have a big problem with the 'actually finished' bit. To me, that sounds like it fails to fulfil some set of boundaries by which you class something 'finished'. What, you're saying its structurally unfinished? OK, it does seem to finish as its reaching some sort of momentum or peak, but maybe thats for the purposes of the song. As its ostensibly about getting older you can probably imagine the metaphorical implications of it all 'ending too suddenly'. Or maybe Murphy just liked it that way.
Or are you saying it's too lyrically unrevealing, and that not enough has been rounded off? I think thats sort of the idea as well. As with the entire album it seems like Murphy is trying to tease us with the true meaning of the songs, making us attribute our own explanations to them. No, he doesn't reveal any answers, and no, there aren't any clear cut morals or messages to be drawn. But this is the reason why i keep revisiting the album and trying to make more out, something i would need to bother with had it all been set out in a classic songwriting fashion.
So yeah, I might sound like a bit of a LCD Soundsystem apologist/overattributer here, but I’m really not that much of a fan boy. And though I do like the song, it misses out on the ‘best song on the album’ award by quite a few places. I just thought your review was coming from completely the wrong place
kudos to anyone who reads all that
WOW.
yup.
yea
wow
Do You See What I Did Here?
Daniel Ross' last review, of LCD Soundsystem's 'All My Friends' single, was not very good. This paraphrasal from that review is not very good, either. It begins promisingly enough, tripping over itself in an entertainingly sarcasm crossed with irony sort of way, and then it just plods 'til its inevitable joke's-not-funny-anymore climax. One grasps for more wit to demean this review than this protracted rebuff, but there really is too much wax in Daniel Ross' ears.
Seriously, man. Get that checked out. Everyone else can hear one of the songs of the year.
This review
is wrong. This song isnt supposed to be some sort of funky disco song. Its like a song off power corruption and lies with extra steve reich esque piano parts. Its awesome. And i dont know why you want the vocal to be more anguished? Do you want it to be emo or something?
Probably the most wrong review I've ever read on DiS
Each to their own and that, but you're so, so wrong
Right,
wrong review.
as others may have mentioned
you are wrong. You did however shoot yourself in the foot with the very first sentence, so I knew not to take your review very seriously. Thanks for that, at least.
You
are an absolute moron, Daniel Ross. You arse.
Well, it got the comments flowing, but hey, this one is a 10
This and Someone Great are mind-expandingly good. An amazing leap forward for LCD, ditching the snarky humor for music that is both profound *and* fun to listen to. How many people you know who can pull that trick off?
another DIS review person who just dont get it!..
it is a very good tune and an album. go and read history. who writes these reviews ? klaxons fan club or something ??
In case you need it mate:

Samaritans helpline
thanks for the samaritans number
but they called me a twat and hung up when i told them what i'd done. oh well, i'm popping to the garage. now where's my hosepipe...
LOL
I love reviews like this.
very good joy division cover on the b side though
i heard that bernard and hooky liked it.
I like this song...
but think the album is a bit over-rated.
Whatevs
All their tunes sound the same to me.
I mean, didn't people stop listening to that first LCD record after a couple of spins?
the start of the track sounds EXACTLY like
Kein Trink Wasser by Orbital (on Snivilisation). i'm shocked and stunned no one else has said this. go find the track, trust me.
how can you start a review 'LCD Soundsystem's last record, Sound Of Silver, was not very good.' and then go on and review a track from that very record. what a waste of time, fair enough you hate the album, prehaps you shouldn't review singles from albums you hate, no?
anyhow, i think the song is good, the album is great, a bit of a grower. the stand out track for me is 'someone great'. a wonderful pop song...
go find that Orbital song thats worth a listen too.
i don't hate the album.
i just don't think it's all that good.
and i got sent the single. i'm grateful for it.
fair enough
.
you wrong
end of.
review's spot on
there isn't muchg going on at all. a load of midi-sounding plonky piano with a few nuzzling electronic lines poncing about in the background. it sounds alright, but it doesn't get you out of your seat. 6/10
who said
every song on the album should get you out of your seat? so you can't dance to it? so?
All of the above responses
..have renewed my faith in DIS, after that truly shocking review.
Please don't let this guy write one again, unless you're just looking for reactions. If you are just looking for reactions, then that is plain stupid.
That's a silly post
Daniel is an excellent writer.
Just happens that LCD ain't his thing right now.
Yup.
Great review:

Another great review:

You, Daniel Ross
are a fool.
it is rare i feel the need to berate a reviewer personally, but the fact remains: you are a fool...
the thing is dear mike diver,
we admire some DIS writers BUT
you shouldnt give someone LCD review who doesnt understand why new order's ceremony/in a lonely place 12 inch is one of the great singles in pop music history.
oh come on
an opinion's an opinion isn't it? everyone has one, it's just that Daniel's got his name in big font at the top of his.
i don't like this single, i'd have given it a 5 or a 6. judging by the reaction, it's one of those songs you either love or hate, but decreeing Ross should never write again because he doesn't agree with you over one band is a bit.. well.. extreme!!
this is true
.
by the way kowalski
that wasn't directed at you, i just didnt fancy scrolling back up the page to post a new comment when i could just reply ;)
Hang on.
This is a really, really good song.
Daniel Ross
Is VERY VERY wrong.
has this been castrated for radio or something?
i mean, if its nearly 8 minutes long on record, could they have done some kind of rubbishy edit?
arhhh
this is one of my favourite songs of sound of silver...!
must be a 9
he could have just slagged off the tune as well
and still got berated for it.. and to be fair i can see why, all my friends is a very love/hate tune from the responses i've gotten from my friends, and the radio edit chops off much of the time the album version uses to gain momentum.
but the fact that he had the cheek to take a potshot at the album too is, well.. a bit out of order, really. especially when, all things considered, it's actually one of the strongest albums of the year.
hell, go onto metacritic and look it up, diver did it with his El-P interview. see all those glowing full marks reviews? sorry to rub it in, but you're mistaken
I'm With Daniel...
its a pleasant enough melody, but lyrically vapid and musically plodding. The first album was a bit shit, Tribulations and Daft Punk... aside, and the second isnt much better. LCD are, whisper it, pretty dull. As to the person who said LCD were way better than the Secret Machines, bollocks! Now Here Is Nowhere was one of the top ten albums of the decade so far - inspirational, beautiful, pulsing, thumping and glorious. Puts Mr. Murphy to shame.
average
i thought they were good on later with jools but the guy can't sing at all. so i listened to this thinking i might be wrong about them after all but the good bits from the live performance weren't there and i felt that the whole thing was rather bland and insipid and that the song didn't really progress the way it did live. new order 'ceremony/in a lonely place' was one of the great singles of all time but sadly this isn't. its embarrassingly derivative and has none of the mystery and dynamism of new order. i absolutely agree with the review that the song doesn't sound finished.
What a load of cock
'Sound of Silver' is not very good? It's fucking brilliant. Tons better than the original, better songwriting, more innovative, and it gets better with each listen. My favourite album of the year so far by a long shot.
I know we are all entitled to an opinion but you are clearly wrong, and your opinion invalid.
weak!
fact
