Gallows earned a stay of execution last night after admitting to fans at a Sheffield gig they had been thinking about quitting.
Frontman Frank Carter - he looks tense, right - told the audience at the city's Leadmill venue that the pressure exerted on the band since their recent rise to fame had reduced him to blubbing tears of self-doubt.
"I'm going to level with you guys, I was out there crying before because I don't know if I can do this any more,” he confessed onstage, before reverting to type, as if to overcompensate for such an unprecedented display of emotion: “I don't know if I can play for you cunts anymore."
Explaining how he’d managed to overcome his wobble, Carter went on: "I was on the phone to my mum and I said, 'I've had enough of this shit'. She said to me, 'You're just like me, you care too much'. It's too important for us to quit."
Mum, knows best, eh?
The Hertfordshire punks are now set to head to the US for the Warped Tour before playing the Reading And Leeds Festivals in August. We’ll say no more, in case they beat us, like the simpering rock critic namby-pambies we are.
Turner?
!
Hooch!
Who cares?
oh
my
gosh
i hope
that this isn't an attention thing.
it is
what a girl. to say that on stage WHAT a girl.
mummy mummy!
the world is a scary place and all those punk/emo kids stare at me funny! Bitty...
Crying
is not HxC.
"You're just like me, you care too much."
How many cheesy channel 5 made for tv movies have they been watching?
Mind you, if I thought my band sucked I would give up.
I never understood people
who say their band sucks, and don't do anything about it.
I knew
I knew it was never a good idea to sign to Warner. To be fair, I can see why how he feels about the fans, recently they've been attracting the emo fans he was originally ranting against. But still, he does sound like a bit of a girl..
I'm seein 'em for the first time tonight
dare me to yell out abuse bout him crying?
do
it
Childish
and Immature attention-seeking twat.
nah
not at all. they've been touring almost constantly for months now and have had a huge amount of press coverage. There's been a huge backlash with thousands of kids slagging them off and calling him a 'chav' and what not. It's hardly surprising that he gets a bit emotional; in this instance he's just happened to say it onstage.
I was good friends with him at school and he's a genuinely lovely guy - the band is just his way of letting off some steam. I really don't think 'childish and immature attention-seeking twat' is justified.
well...
touring for months on end is something that the majority of bands do, like it or not. I can sympathize with people who would have to endure constant gigging, but threatening to quit and crying to your mum on the phone backstage because of constant touring is uncalled for, especially for a punk band. Like most singers, he will be the subject of ridicule to certain people, but hey, thats life. He probably is a nice guy, but he really does need to grow up.
chav?
really?
i bought
the nme the other day, purely for the free vinyl
i flicked through it, and i hadn't realised that these guys were the biggest band in britain and the most important act around...
nme...
also said that about The Twang. Christ.
I thought this as about Aaron Carter
I have never heard of this band and fail to see why I should care.
i was at the show
and he was genuinely really upset.
its easy enough to sit back on the internet and criticise bands but they are under a lot of pressure and so what if they're not afraid to admit it worries them?
totally agree..
..with the above. I know touring is part and parcel of being in a band (i'd love to be able to tour) but currently Gallows and particularly their frontman are very much in the spotlight, and have received a lot of extremely vocal criticism, which is going to hurt. It's not like he's shooting his mouth off in interviews or anything; he's said it on stage, probably in a bit of a state. You may think he's a twat from whatever limited experience you've had of him; however, you're not in his shoes now and have no idea how you'd react.
anywho..
one of the nicest guys around
genuine, rare
I Agree, Too.
How many of you have actually been in Carter's position? I'm not going to pretend that I have. Give the guy a break.
i have
...not as a big a deal, but yeah, loads of people have, nothing wrong with the way he feels, but come on if Bono said this what would you think. Bono played a gig on the day his dad died. (he flew home straight after,it happened during the gig, he was told, whlist on stage, i'm not saying this is a good reaction, but people go through a lot in bands)
whatever. to feel like that is fine, to cry/whinge/moan on stage is fuckin dumb.
THE GUY IS LIVING OUT THE DREAM OF BEING A ROCK 'N' ROLL STAR and he's moaning about it?????
fuck off.
pressure, pressure my ass, try being a doctor cutting people up trying to save a live, get a grip, yelling screamy twat...
... Owned.
: ( . But, still, I think it's more to do with Gallows' meteoric rise to fame (sorry for the cliché) than it is their constant touring.
Not owned!
Bottom, 'LIVING OUT THE DREAM' suggests to me that you really haven't been in his shoes, mon papillon. Why not spill the beans and let us know what band you've been in so we can properly compare?
I'm sure 'being a rock n roll star' is amazing in many respects, I'd love to be one, but to one day be Joe Public and the next to face thousands upon thousands of kids calling you all sorts of things all over the internet and face nigh constant press attention and scrutiny..it's a huge lifestyle change and is going to elicit an emotional response. and the fact is, he's said a couple of fucking lines onstage, that's all.
There are different types of pressure. Would you be cool as a cucumber knowing that Warner had supposedly invested a million pounds into your band (2 or 4 album deal I believe)? And he's the selling point, let's face it. I know I'd feel under a hell of a lot of pressure.
Oh and incidentally, Bono's father died in 2001, 21 full years after U2's first hit single...it's not comparing like with like, is it?
owned.
my band is waaaaaaaay smaller than gallows. weve been on a few tours, it's fucken hard work, but it's fun work. i enjoy most of it. i've lived off £10 a day for weeks on end. (not easy, with prices at services) if i see another ginster at 5am.....i'll eat it....you argue, fight, get depressed, play shite shows, play good ones, load in gear at 7am, without sleep, and you spend far to much time with the same people...and sometimes, it's fucken boring. but it's fun, and as far as a job goes, i'd loooooove to do it full time.
...he IS living the dream, though isnt he? why would you sign to such a huge deal unless you wanted to be huge? why? doesn't make sense, really....he isn't dumb. what did he expect? that warners wouldn't want them to tour a LOT. look how much the klaxons have had to tour...
i didn't say it wasn't hard, and he's fair enough to feel a bit down from time to time but moaning on stage IS fucken lame. it is. end off.
(the u2 thing, sure your right, just an example, when your dad dies, i bet you'll find it pretty hard no matter how old you are or how big your band is.....
if i got a deal as big as gallows, i'd freak. a deal that big is aMASSIVE bank loan to the band, your right it's shit loads of pressure, but i'd never, never, never moan about it on stage or in public. would you?
his mum died just before war, btw....he still toured, whatever, u2 are a little shite nowdays, just an example, prehaps a poor one, but i think you get my point....maybe not. (the more i think about this the more i think it's a baaad example))
shit
the 'if i got a deal...' rant should go above the u2 shit, not within it.
(shit work is dull today)
pansy.
and this is a punk frontman?
fuck off.
i actually thought gallows could be the new clash after seeing them in camden but this sort of shit isn't even expected from those keane wankers.
hmm.
so being upfront with your fans about how you're feeling instead of posing it up isn't punk anymore?
and vaguely homophobic abuse is?
damn, I must have missed a whole bunch of meetings.
