I am going to Reading to see the Pixies.
It it is also the 30th birthday of a good friend but that is secondary.
He has bought my ticket however.
I am a fortunate young lady.

yes but dont you weep blood every time you go out and all the bloody dj plays is 'Here Comes your man' and 'debaser' - would love to go our and hear 'Allison' (yes its about Mose Allison) or even Alec Eiffel or Ed is Dead - these idiots should know that people who go to these clubs dont just buy 'Now That's What I Call Mainstream Indie' Vol 87 do they?
The pixies were one of the bands who kept me sane whislt kicking against the pricks in Somerset (Dom Masters sadly not included amongst them) so it saddens me a lot to hear only songs from Doolittle when i go out
Yeah but that's the same for all bands. DJs play the hits, they have a dancefloor to fill. I think I may have to go to Reading just for this show. I'm kinda doing a personal Pixies revival at the minute and listening to their entire output back to back, I love them even more now than I ever have.
I think if I heard the start of Veloura live, my head would probably fly off in happiness.
It's only a guessed reaction. .. ..
Although when Frank Black screams in the chorus of Tame, I think my entire body may spontaneously combust. So, yeah, if you could find my head and put it in a basket, then stand near my twitching body with a fire extinguisher, than that would be really helpful. Thanks! I'll buy you a pint afterwards.
I agree with your sentiments Prole, the same can be said for every band you hear playing when you go out. How many times can we listen to Blue Monday, Love Will Tear Us Apart, Libertines, Hounds Of Love, Helicopter etc etc and the Pixies songs you mentioned. They insist on only ever playing one song from say The Buzzcocks and love telling me that my requests are non danceable songs before playing Mr Brightside for the second time in the night. I once asked a DJ why he was playing Gwen Stefani and he said 'because the kids love it even though I know it's crap' Jesus!
I know its true in the case of most bands it just seems to be more noticable with the pixies, sorry 'pixies' - still love em and might copy J.B Luurve with a re-listening programme of my own!
I really dislike hearing the Killers when i go out - its so moribund I've started craving to hear 'Lackey'
obvously the anwser is not to go to Carling type indie nights - you expect it in the provinces but not in London!
hahaha The provinces? Jeez that sounded like an Oscar Wilde character quote Prole. I thought all 'indie music' nights were the same? Nothing would make me desire Lackey although I have been hearing Stan Bowles played recently. I have started to hear Psycho Killer too. I just stop dancing to certain things now esp Babyshambles.
Presumably in "the provinces" it's okay for indie nights to be a tad generic, because there's only one indie club in town. Whereas in London there should be more variety.
Of course the way it tends to work is that in London it's exactly the same but spread across more clubs and with more people.
And it really annoys me too when they only ever play "here comes your man" at clubs. It's every non-pixies fan's favourite pixies song. They should play Eric Eifel or Holiday or Allison.
Has anyone seen the video for MGTH? Truly awful, just like every other pixies video! For a band that make such cool music, they are the ugliest, most badly dressed bunch of ugly, uncool people ever.
Pixies are fantastic and I agree that the non-Doolittle stuff doesn't get anywhere near enough exposure, especially the later work which is hugely underrated. Bossanova is one of my favourite albums ever.
My favourite ever band equal with Pavement. I don't think they've ever done one shit song, even including 'Santo' & 'Weird at my School'. I think the perfect opener for them is 'Bone Machine'. When I saw them last year, they opened with 'Head on' and second time 'In Heaven'. They could have opened with the fucking Birdie Song & I wouldn't have cared. Their reformation was one of the best things that's ever happened for me, but I really really REALLY hope they don't go & spoil it all by making another record!!!
Hmmm think I'm gonna listen to 'Ive been tired' really loud now ;-)
I am going to Leeds for a day this year just to see the Pixies. I'm not really old enough to have been around when they come out but its through Ash and Nirvana that I got into the Pixies. I never thought an opportunity to see them live would appear. Oh and btw. people in the provinces probably hate the Others more than all you cockneys put together.
I would disagree. How many tunes start in the middle of a guitar solo & have someone singing the Perry Mason theme halfway through? By default it makes it great!
U-Mass is brilliant too - if only to hear/see Black Francis scream It's Ed-u-ca-tion-aaaaalll!! at the end, over the riff that Nirvana made famous....

I enjoyed that rant - I await the tirades!

There's something about that song, uh...
Re: If man is 5...
If you're going to Reading or Leeds that may well happen. If I see you I'll help you find your head.

Can we have the 'mainstream indie' discussion again? :)
Re: If man is 5...
i don't particularly enjoy them at any time, actually...
Re: If man is 5...
where is my mind
debaser
or gigantic
and have people dance every time.
played Here Comes your Man fro the first time this wednesday and the response was totally underwhelming.
get away with tame and planet of sound though, which is nice.
i once tried to play I Been Tired. it just doesnt work,
people dont know it.

Apart from Kid Deal, maybe.
Re: If man is 5...
apolgies to my 'provinces' reference - eerily I almost took the Picture of Dorian Grey to read on the way to work today!

Cecillia Ann?
Jesus, so many good songs to choose from.
They could play for hours.
Maybe they will.

I think they have done one like. Space (I Believe In) is awful, especially in comparison to the rest of Trompe Le Monde.

fucking love that version from the BBC sessions. Might have to stick it on right now
